The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Clearly, all rapists are Face of a Thug types in stained wifebeaters and a grim face. No way pretty faced boys and men in business suits could possibly be sex criminals. One wonders how much this stereotyping explains why dealing with rape - and other sex crimes - is so difficult public policy wise, as an aside.

Something I noticed is that some people threat rape a sort of videogame bad ending: something it happne because you comit some sort a mistake, they atract the rape even if they didnt want it.

so I think there the same here, a sort of "Im a good boy/girl so nothing bad happen"

No, the argument was - "I mean we're talking about a 15-year-old girl, which I respect. You know, I'm a woman, I respect. But we're talking about a 17-year-old boy, in High School, testosterone running high. Tell me what boy hasn't done this in High School. Please, I would like to know."

Which is miles worse than "He never tried to rape me, so he must be upstanding!"

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"

Florida Democratic congressional candidate dies unexpectedly:

April Freeman, the Democratic congressional candidate in Florida's 17th District, died Sunday night, her husband announced on Facebook Monday.

Freeman was running for the seat being vacated by Republican Rep. Tom Rooney in a district south of Orlando and Tampa that President Donald Trump won by 27 percentage points in 2016.

"Its (sic) with great sadness that I feel I must inform all of you that my beloved wife April passed away suddenly last night. To all of her family and friends here on Facebook, my heart aches with you," the social media post from her husband reads.

Further information on Freeman's death was not immediately available.

The campaign could not be immediately reached for comment, but according to a statement from Florida Democratic Party Chair Terrie Rizzo, Freeman was in the office making calls "just last night."

The district has a Cook PVI rating of R+13. The GOP was never going to lose there.

It was almost certainly just a heart attack.

Sometimes people die in their sleep, or drop dead without much warning. Sad, but nothing sinister going on.

Bad news update: Kavanaugh is getting a Committee vote on Friday. So, for now, Senator Turtlehead believes he has the votes.

[up][up]The way Republicans and conservatives treated Roy Moore should've been evidence how little they take sexual assault and harrassment allegations seriously, or care about it.

The difference, though, is that Supreme Court justices are not democratically elected, so Brett is completely Teflon Don.

He's impeachable and the 2020 senate map is MORE favourable for the dems and the Republicans are doing nothing to get more popular. Buying a seat for 2 years is a stupid move on the repubs' part.

There's a reason they're better off getting rid of him. But sunk cost fallacy...

You need like two-thirds of the Senate to impeach a judge, and judging by the current political environment, I see Democrats getting that many seats when my hair is gray.

Oh, and that's not even touching the possibility that the 2020 elections could be flawed, due to Census changes and foreign meddling, among many other caveats.

I see we're back to the out of touch pessimism where a political environment strongly in favour of Democrats is somehow against them.

It would require two back to back blowouts for the Dems but it’s not impossible.

If the Republicans Force this though and face huge political backlash the Dems could end up with 53-55 Senate seats, then come 2020 if the Dems do a blowout win again they could up that by 9 swing to lean seats plus the possibility of a pickup or two amongst the other 12 Republican seats.

It’s possible for the Dems to hit 66 Senate seats after 2020, not likely, but within the realm of reasonable consideration if the Republicans do very badly (for a relatively normal value of very badly).

When it comes to elections, wouldn't the 2020 Census only start affecting races in 2022?

It's possible Mitch is trying to kill the nomination without being identified as the assassin. Trump can't blame him if Flake, Murkowski and Collins all say no, and he doesn't want Kavanaugh to be an election issue.
