The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up]So if Mueller is spotted going to a tailor for a new suit, we riot?

EDIT: Seriously? This is the page-topper? Okay, in more serious discussion, what all the disparate stories seem to have in common is that Rod Rosenstein has not actually resigned. He verbally offered a resignation at most, which is not legally binding in any way. The ball is still in Trump's court for now.

[up][up] that’s certainly a possibility. The other possibility, is that we ended up at the wrong end of a big game of telephone, and they don’t know what’s going on either.

We already know how disfunctional this White (Mad?) House is, and the power plays and backstabbing, from previous reporting. From what I’ve seen, no one actually seems to be quite aware of what’s going on, and this might be the result.

Trump does not "hold" elections, states do, plus Congress running the Electoral College. Trump cannot gerrymander anything, states can. The US Constitution isn't that long.

For what it's worth Germany has a lot of British expats and increasing, probably due to Brexit. Apparently in 2017 there was a record high of folks from the US as well, can't find info on 2018.

(Take note that the travel advisories page on Germany says nothing about the fact that waving around things like the swastika or Nazi salutes can get you in legal trouble. Same on their page for Switzerland. I wonder if that omission is deliberate, seeing as the advisory page does discuss sex law however.)

"I have a question: What will happen if Trump just refuses to hold elections?"

The President doesn't "hold" elections in the first place, so he doesn't have the legal mechanism to halt them. If he tried, he would likely be impeached. If an election proceeded and he refused to honor the result, he would be escorted out of the White House by the Secret Service anyway.

Courtesy of Sarah Sanders' twitter:

At the request of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, he and President Trump had an extended conversation to discuss the recent news stories. Because the President is at the United Nations General Assembly and has a full schedule with leaders from around the world, they will meet on Thursday when the President returns to Washington, D.C.

the most recent story.

NEWS- per source familiar, rod rosenstein is still the deputy attorney general as of right now.

he had a previously scheduled meeting at the WH at 12p, which he is at right now.

the axios report that he verbally resigned is false, though there was a conversation over the wknd.

SOURCE- it is becoming less likely that rod rosenstein is out of his job as deputy attorney general by day’s end.

THURSDAY IS GOING TO BE A DAY: rosenstein and trump will meet

kavanaugh and ford will testify before senate judiciary committee

This Onion piece made me laugh

’’’BREAKING: Wait—Sorry, False Alarm’’’

WASHINGTON—In a shocking development revealed just moments ago, sources confirmed that—oh, wait, sorry, false alarm. Multiple reports confirmed that, despite late-breaking suggestions to the contrary, you can actually forget about this news item and return to whatever you were doing before seeing this. In fact, sources have now informed reporters that we kind of jumped the gun on publishing this article at all, let alone labeling it “breaking” news. Frankly, sources concluded, this was our bad for getting you all worked up over nothing. Although, hold on one second, because several reports are now suggesting that it might still be worth keeping an eye on this story to see if—no, hold on, on second thought, just forget we said anything.

A rundown courtesy of today's WTF Just Happened Today feed:

https://whatthefuckjusthappenedtoday.com/2018/09/24/day-613/

Day 613: Lingering stench.

1/ Rod Rosenstein reportedly verbally resigned to John Kelly in anticipation of being fired by Trump. The two will meet on Thursday to discuss the deputy attorney general's future at the Justice Department. While Rosenstein has not submitted a formal resignation, he went to the White House this morning for a meeting where he "expect[ed] to be fired." The news follows reports that Rosenstein discussed the idea of wearing a wire last year to secretly record Trump in order to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove the President from office. Rosenstein has been overseeing Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether any Trump associates conspired with those efforts. Noel Francisco, the solicitor general, would take on oversight of Mueller's investigation and could fire or limit the investigation. (Axios / New York Times / Washington Post / Bloomberg / CNN / Wall Street Journal / CNBC)

On Friday, Trump promised to get rid of the "lingering stench" at the Justice Department and FBI following reports that Rod Rosenstein discussed secretly recording Trump last year. "You've seen what happened in the FBI and the Department of Justice. The bad ones, they're all gone. They're all gone," Trump said at a political rally in Missouri. "But there is a lingering stench and we're going to get rid of that, too." Trump did not explicitly mention the Rosenstein in his comments. (Associated Press)

2/ A second woman publicly accused Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault when they were both freshmen at Yale during the 1983-84 academic school year. Deborah Ramirez said Kavanaugh exposed himself and shoved his penis in her face without her consent at a dorm party. Kavanaugh's roommate at the time said he "cannot imagine [Ramirez] making this up" and that Kavanaugh was "frequently, incoherently drunk." After learning of Ramirez's allegation last week, Senate Republicans called for the Senate Judiciary Committee to accelerate its confirmation vote. (New Yorker)

Michael Avenatti tweeted that he represents "a woman with credible information" about Kavanaugh and his friend Mark Judge, who Christine Blasey Ford alleges was in the room at the time of the Kavanaugh's alleged assault. Avenatti said he has "significant evidence" that Kavanaugh and Judge "would participate in the targeting of women with alcohol/drugs." (Axios / Politico)

Sen. Dianne Feinstein called for the Senate Judiciary Committee to delay the Kavanaugh nomination. In her letter, Feinstein asked "that the newest allegations of sexual misconduct be referred to the FBI for investigation, and that you join our request for the White House to direct the FBI to investigate the allegations of Christine Blasey Ford as well as these new claims." (Washington Post)

Kavanaugh and the White House denied Ramirez's allegation, calling it "a smear, plain and simple." (CNN)

3/ Christine Blasey Ford agreed to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Blasey will appear Thursday before a committee of 21 senators for questioning, but no decision has been reached about whether Republicans would use staff attorneys to question Ford about her claim. All the Republicans on the panel are men. (New York Times / Politico)

4/ Trump called the allegations against Kavanaugh "totally political" and said he believes Kavanaugh "all the way." Trump defended his nominee as "a fine man, with an unblemished past," despite at least two women accusing Kavanaugh of sexual assault. (Politico / CNN / ABC News)

Mitch Mc Connell called Trump on Friday to say his tweets about Kavanaugh weren't helpful. Trump said that if Ford's attack "was as bad as she says," then she would have filed charges immediately. (CNN)

Ben Carson claimed that a century-old plot by Socialists to take over America is responsible for the recent allegations of sexual assault against Kavanaugh.
