The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up] I wouldn't count on that

Some choice excerpts...

Francisco’s résumé includes working on George W. Bush’s legal team in the 2000 Florida recount and, as a partner at the law firm Jones Day, representing former Virginia Gov. Bob Mc Donnell in his successful case before the Supreme Court that led to Mc Donnell’s corruption conviction being overturned

“I don’t think it would be appropriate for the Department of Justice to appoint” a special counsel, he testified, explaining that “my own personal belief is that when you hand these issues off to the career prosecutors in the public integrity sections in the US attorneys’ offices in the Department of Justice, those attorneys are generally better able to assess whether a case should be pursued.”

Maybe he's had a change of heart, who knows, he's been out of the spotlight up until today but, we're definitely headed towards crisis mode.

The reports are incredibly conflicting, and I don’t think anyone knows what’s going on yet. Considering how chaotic this White House is, I’m going to guess that the sources they are using have no real idea either.

Sigh, ya'think trump just decided to to become president on a whim, that it would be the same as his crappy real estate chain or that this was something he was planning and collaborating on for a long time?

[up][up] This is something he's wanted to do for a long time; he ran as a 3rd Party Candidate in 2000 for the Reform Party (aka, the Ross Perot Party), though he stopped actively being a part of that Party in February. Only with Obama, though, did he start 'seriously' influencing politics (specifically the Republican Party), and he's been lucky ever since.

I'm betting when the dust settles historians are going to look at the New York Times as the newspaper that did more to destroy democracy than save it.

I can't imagine how potential left-leaning voters will choose to vote in the midterms, 2020 and beyond instead of leaving the US after this.

Certainly, I doubt you’ll see people leaving the country in droves over the next two months.

Seriously, Mario, I understand that this is all feels shitty, but this sort of aimless pessimism displays a rather tenuous grasp of the current situation.

Man, Trump firing Rosenstein before the Midterms is going to shake things up. If he tries to follow that up with hobbling or even terminating Mueller...

[up][up][up]What are you even talking about? There's no vast community of American refugees and there won't be in the foreseeable future. If you're going to be pessimistic, at least ground your pessimism in reality.

[up][up][up][up]One of the leaders of the Charlottesville counter-protests against United the Right last year left for Germany earlier this year because she saw the writing on the wall when Nazis continued to harass her, and the first accuser against Kavanaugh was reported to have wanted to flee the US when Kavanaugh was named the nominee for Kennedy's replacement, because she knew that voting Democrats in Congress wouldn't stop Roe v. Wade from getting overturned and abortion becoming illegal again.

[up][up][up]Usually in these scenarios pessimism is the sensible position. There's no silver lining in the event the Russia investigation is quashed. Trump will feel empowered to do whatever he wants, and a Democratic Congress will be limited in what it can do to stop him from doing something catastrophic, especially if the Supreme Court is divided or conservative-dominated. What happens if Trump has no staff left and he's on his own? Can Congress stop him from carrying out a nuclear strike or lashing out in other ways? Can Trump call for the military to dissolve Congress and arrest all Democratic members of it (that may not be legal, but that won't stop Trump from trying)?

[up][up]The question is will the damage be already done? If so, Democrats in Congress will find themselves in the same scenario as the years leading up to the recession, which directly led to where we are now.

[up]Just you wait. Canada's going to see an influx of American refugees soon if this political situation gets more dire.

I’d say this nicely sums up the news today

If you’re just joining us, Rod Rosenstein has resigned but also hasn’t resigned yet and is going to the White House in order to resign and also to be fired and also he’s already BEEN fired and is already gone and also isn’t resigning or getting fired.

So...Americans are now fleeing to Germany because they are afraid of Nazis? How the times have changed...I just hope we'll manage to hold out against our own alt-right.

I have a question: What will happen if Trump just refuses to hold elections?

For all its many flaws, the US constitution makes it all but impossible to halt elections. The US could be under partial alien occupation, and legally elections would still be happening.

On the other hand, he and his Republican allies can make them illegitimate through gerrymandering, voter suppression, purging from the rolls among other things....

Just because you can't stop an election doesn't mean you can't make it a sham. Just look at Russia, North Korea, Iran and all the other authoritarian countries with legally mandated elections.

Sharing this in case people haven't seen it. It might be time for a massive protest.

Edit: I should probably explain. This is a list of places protests are going to be held if certain individuals are fired and instructions for when they're happening. Rosenstein being fired is one of the triggers for a protest. You can sign up to be notified.

All things which, in the US, are still insufficient to counter sufficient voter turnout and dissent. And all of which get much harder if people vote in these mid-terms, due to the change in the balance of power.

[up][up] For context, at first glance it seems to be a way to find protest rallies in your area in preparation for any Rosenstein and Mueller fitting shenanigans.

Correction: Firing shenanigans
