Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Hopefully I'll feel confident to change my avatar off this scumbag soon. Apologies to any scumbags I insulted.Minnesota Rep. Jim Knoblach ends campaign amid daughter's allegations of inappropriate touching.
(Well, not all of them. 2 of the 9 have said nothing, but they're not leaping to his defence either.)
Said Representative (Paul Gosar of Arizona) responded. Here's
a quick excerpt from the Washington Post article about his response and a few facts about where Gosar stands on the racist and nutso spectrums.
“I was like, ‘Oh my God, you have to be kidding me,’ and then he went and got elected,” David Gosar said. “I’m not going to break bread with a racist.”
Paul Gosar did not respond to a request for comment sent to his spokeswoman, but on Saturday, he tweeted that the six family members are “liberal Democrats who hate President Trump.” He added that they do not live in Arizona and claimed Brill’s policies are “out of sync with what Arizona wants and the country needs.”
“These disgruntled Hillary supporters are related by blood to me but like leftists everywhere, they put political ideology before family,” he tweeted, adding the hashtag #MAGA 2018 for the Trump campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.”
I'm sure I could roll my eyes harder, I'm just not sure how to do so.
In January, he drew bipartisan rebukes after he said he asked the Capitol Police and Attorney General Jeff Sessions to check I Ds at the State of the Union to arrest and deport any undocumented immigrants in attendance.
At least one senator, Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.), planned to bring an undocumented “dreamer” to the speech as a guest.
The next month, Gosar said FBI and Department of Justice officials such as Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein, former acting attorney general Sally Yates and former FBI director James B. Comey should face “treason” charges because of developments in the Russia investigation.
In the summer, he spoke at a rally in London for one of Britain’s most notorious anti-Muslim campaigners, Tommy Robinson, drawing rebukes from Muslim American groups.
But perhaps his most notorious moment came in 2017 in an interview with Vice News, when he spread a baseless conspiracy theory that the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville that summer had been “created by the left.”
He also brought up the common right-wing falsehood that the liberal philanthropist and financier George Soros, who survived the Holocaust, had collaborated with Nazis.
Seven siblings — there are 10 in total, including the congressman — responded at the time by writing a letter to the Kingman Daily Miner, a newspaper in Gosar’s district, decrying his comments in blunt terms.
“We are aghast that Paul has sunk so low that he now spews the most despicable slander against an 87-year-old man without a shred of proof,” the letter said. “Those aren’t our family values or the values of the small Wyoming town we grew up in. … It is extremely upsetting to have to call you out on this, Paul, but you’ve forced our hand with your deceit and anti-semitic dog whistle.”
Pete Gosar, who was the seventh signee of the letter, ran for governor of Wyoming as a Democrat in 2014.
Brill’s ads, of which there are at least three, were filmed in Jackson and Laramie, Wyo. Brill’s team reached out to the Gosar siblings after seeing some of their criticism on social media, according to the Phoenix New Times.
A physician and a businessman before he decided to run for office, Brill has campaigned on a public health option like Medicare available to all and a platform of lowering the national debt, according to the Arizona Republic.
He faces an uphill battle for the seat; Gosar trounced his Democratic opponent in the deep-red district in 2016, receiving 71.5 percent of the votes. The counties that make up Gosar’s district voted heavily for Donald Trump.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Their lack of self awareness shouldn't unpleasantly surprise me, their hypocrisy shouldn't heat me so, but oh boi does it.
Seriously, not to mention that it blatantly just doesn't work in that the Democratic Party turned on Franken when his abuses came to light. So the idea that we're somehow hypocrites about this is extremely easy to debunk.
God they're desperate morons.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangAt this point all the Republicans have is increasingly pathetic and transparent whataboutism, call me crazy but I don't think focusing on Bill Clinton's wrongdoings in 90's are likely to be a very compelling to voters when we have Republican wrongdoings now.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI'm going to be completely frank about Kavanaugh, no matter how it may make me look to some people. I find it problematic that something done 36 years ago, as a teenager, is being held over him so strongly now. I feel that if this were any other kind of alleged crime, besides one involving rape or sexual assault, it'd be waved off as youthful stupidity. (Well, I guess there's murder or espionage... capital crimes don't get a statute of limitations.) Teenagers do dumb things, some of them at parties and some of them involving sex, and the stupidity applies to both genders. Holding that over their heads for the rest of their lives is kind of unfair, regardless of who it is and what they did.
That said, it is attempted rape, and if the charge is true, he seems to have escaped any sort of consequence for it. That is bothersome from a purely moral standpoint regardless of what position he's being considered for. More to the point, however, I'd say that it's right in line with Kavanaugh's purported views on women's rights. There's a very strong correlation between the mentality that women are sex objects for a man's enjoyment and the belief that they don't have the right to control their own bodies.
The most offensive thing about this now is that both Ford and Kavanaugh deserve a full and serious investigation of this charge, and Congress is refusing to do that.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Not to mention that the crucial difference was that she was still running, propaganda about something that happened in the past involving someone still active is very different from propaganda about something that happened in the past involving someone who's not running.
Bill Clinton is not a Democratic candidate in the midterms and thus Republican attempts to use him as a cudgel when Democrats can have a much easier time using Kavanaugh are doomed to failure.
Firstly "teenagers do dumb things" does not justify attempted rape so this has no place here. If we're talking about a lesser wrongdoing then maybe but certainly not when we're talking about attempted rape.
Furthermore yes it should effect the rest of their lives if they are never held responsible, not to mention that we aren't talking about conviction. Kavanaugh would just not ascended to the Supreme Court and go back to his prestigious desk job.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangKavanaugh can escape the sins of his past when he actually faces punishment for it, and not until then. If you do something bad, you need to pay for it, regardless of however long it's been. Only after you take responsibility for your crimes and serve a suitable punishment do you get to move on from them.
Well said, there cannot be rehabilitation if there are no consequences.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangAs I said in another place, if it's true then Kavanaugh's a man who refuses to own up to and hold himself accountable for his past actions, in this case crimes against a woman, while simultaneously being willfully ignorant of other woman-related issues like the nature of birth control pills. As far as I'm aware he also hasn't spoken out against the abuse Dr. Ford is enduring, which gives away his entitlement issues and shallow character. There should be higher standards for a lifetime Supreme Court appointment than this.

Item 1) Dr. Blasey Ford has been traumatized by this since it happened. It’s been following her her entire life. Also, this is a JOB INTERVIEW for a LIFETIME APPOINTMENT. I’m 100% okay with a “no attempted rapists on the Supreme Court” rule.
Item 2) And yet Kavanaugh thinks 17 year old girls should have to remain pregnant whether they want to or not, and be a parent for the rest of their lives.
Item 3) Even IF you think Kavanaugh is innocent, his response has been despicable and disqualifying.

I agree with all of those things. This whole thing makes me very uncomfortable, primarily at the behavior of people who are trying to get Kavanaugh confirmed regardless.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

Exactly this, it's no coincidence that he said it while everyone is talking about Kavanaugh being accused of sexual assault.
It just doesn't make sense for him to be targeting Ginsburg when downplaying sexual assault allegations is clearly more useful for them.
