Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Also even if Rosenstein is fired that doesn’t mean we’re looking at Trump stooges taking over immediately, we’re looking at politically unknown minor figures in the justice department, figures who probably realises that interfering in the investigation to aid Trump would open them up to charges of obstruction of justice.

Maybe they could save Trump from Muller, but they’d be sacrificing themselves to do it by committing crimes, Trump couldn’t inspire that kind of loyalty in his personal fixer or his campaign chairman, what makes people think he will inspire it in justice department officals?

Hell Muller isn’t even heading the only investigation into Trump, the state of New York is dealing with both Cohen and the Trump Organisation, both of which can link into Trump.

[up] Black people already de facto cant own guns without getting shot by racist cops, so letting racist cops say no initaly wouldn’t make much difference.

In the end you can’t not have laws just because racists would abuse them, you should avoid racist laws and racist law enforcment, not laws.

Also any federal licensing program should had strict federal guidelines, so less “your second cousin lives in a rough area” and more “you man-child 17 year old is unstable and likely to steal your guns so he can shoot up his school”.

'No accident' Brett Kavanaugh's female law clerks 'looked like models', Yale professor told students

     Article Quotes

A top professor at Yale Law School who strongly endorsed supreme court nominee Brett Kavanaugh as a “mentor to women” privately told a group of law students last year that it was “not an accident” that Kavanaugh’s female law clerks all “looked like models” and would provide advice to students about their physical appearance if they wanted to work for him, the Guardian has learned.

Amy Chua, a Yale professor who wrote a bestselling book on parenting called Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, was known for instructing female law students who were preparing for interviews with Kavanaugh on ways they could dress to exude a “model-like” femininity to help them win a post in Kavanaugh’s chambers, according to sources.

In one case, Jed Rubenfeld, also an influential professor at Yale and who is married to Chua, told a prospective clerk that Kavanaugh liked a certain “look”.

“He told me, ‘You should know that Judge Kavanaugh hires women with a certain look,’” one woman told the Guardian. “He did not say what the look was and I did not ask.”

Kavanaugh is close to Justice Anthony Kennedy, whose retirement from the supreme court left an opening, and Kavanaugh was one of three judges who vetted clerks to serve in Kennedy’s chambers. His role as a so-called “feeder” judge made his clerkships among the most coveted posts for law students across the country, but especially at his alma mater, Yale.

The conversation then turned to Kozinski’s protege and good friend Kavanaugh, who one source said was a familiar name even though he had not yet been nominated to the high court. Chua allegedly told the students that it was “no accident” that Kavanaugh’s female clerks “looked like models”. Student reacted with surprise, and quickly pointed out that Chua’s own daughter was due to clerk for Kavanaugh.

A source said that Chua quickly responded, saying that her own daughter would not put up with any inappropriate behaviour.

The Guardian has learned that Rubenfeld is currently the subject of an internal investigation at Yale. The investigation is focused on Rubenfeld’s conduct, particularly with female law students. Students have also raised related concerns to Yale authorities about Chua’s powerful influence in the clerkships process. The investigation was initiated before Kavanaugh was nominated by Donald Trump to serve on the high court.

#WhyIDidntReport: sexual assault victims react to Trump's attack on Ford

    Article Quotes

In a scene that felt particularly Gileadean, Trump was interviewed by his late-night confidant and biggest cheerleader Sean Hannity in front of a braying audience of adoring supporters on Fox News on Thursday night.

Hannity began the interview, in places inaudible because of how loud the crowd was cheering, by joshing “wave to the fake news media” and pointing at the press pool. He then asked Trump about Brett Kavanaugh’s hearings and the sexual assault allegations made against him.

Trump tweeted similar sentiments on the same day, sparking people to share their stories of why they didn’t report sexual crimes against them, under the hashtag #Why I Didnt Report. At the time of writing, so many people had posted stories that the hashtag was number one in the US.

By the way, it's been Number 1 for a few hours in the UK as well.

Trump's tweets below:

     Tweets

Judge Brett Kavanaugh is a fine man, with an impeccable reputation, who is under assault by radical left wing politicians who don’t want to know the answers, they just want to destroy and delay. Facts don’t matter. I go through this with them every single day in D.C.

I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents. I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!

I will Chair the United Nations Security Council meeting on Iran next week!

The radical left lawyers want the FBI to get involved NOW. Why didn’t someone call the FBI 36 years ago?

I met with the DOJ concerning the declassification of various UNREDACTED documents. They agreed to release them but stated that so doing may have a perceived negative impact on the Russia probe. Also, key Allies’ called to ask not to release. Therefore, the Inspector General.....

....has been asked to review these documents on an expedited basis. I believe he will move quickly on this (and hopefully other things which he is looking at). In the end I can always declassify if it proves necessary. Speed is very important to me - and everyone!

Senator Feinstein and the Democrats held the letter for months, only to release it with a bang after the hearings were OVER - done very purposefully to Obstruct & Resist & Delay. Let her testify, or not, and TAKE THE VOTE!

That Orange Bastard is the height of entitlement. A man who can never understand the pain millions live with every day. He cannot comprehend how people think and react to trauma, to people living under other's power. I hate him more than I thought possible. And that's without going into the allegations against him.

@ Demongodofchaos 2: ...I guess I can see how someone might find that Mars ad with Mr T offensive? But it's telling that the UK didn't seem too riled. I think that's because we have a lot more Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist stuff. But looking at the ad again, yeah, that guy was coded as "wuss", with a swaying butt and all that. That doesn't necessarily mean "gay", though. But it does paint a certain picture of masculinity.

Like, no one complained about the one where Mr T threatened to football player faking an injury because those people deserve their suffering.

Perhaps the humour is that Mr T is overreacting to something trivial? Why didn't the UK care as much? Is it because us Brits just find bad people amusing? Our comedy often has nastier or more flawed people as the subjects. Cultural differences, it seems to be.

Speed Walking is pretty lame though.

Day 610: As bad as she says

1/ Trump questioned Dr. Christine Blasey Ford's credibility and contended that if the alleged attack "was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed," adding: "Why didn't someone call the FBI 36 years ago?" Trump also challenged Dr. Ford to produce law enforcement reports "so that we can learn date, time, and place!" of the attack. Trump added Brett Kavanaugh is "a fine man, with an impeccable reputation, who is under assault by radical left wing politicians." (New York Times / Washington Post / Politico / NBC News / CNN / Wall Street Journal)

https://www.politico.com/story/2018/09/20/trump-kavanaugh-allegations-fbi-833599

Susan Collins said she was "appalled" by Trump's tweets criticizing Dr. Ford for not coming forward sooner with her allegations against Brett Kavanaugh. The Maine senator is a key swing vote in the larger Senate vote for Kavanaugh's confirmation. (Press Herald)

https://www.pressherald.com/2018/09/21/collins-appalled-by-trumps-tweet-criticizing-kavanaugh-accuser/

White House officials: "You have no idea" how hard it's been to keep Trump from attacking Dr. Ford. A few hours before Trump's tweets, a White House official said: "Hopefully he can keep it together until Monday. That's only, like, another 48 hours right?" (Axios)

https://www.axios.com/trump-brett-kavanaugh-accuser-christine-blasey-ford-d94ab8e3-1416-4d92-97c9-a78cdad99482.html

2/ The Senate Judiciary Committee agreed to meet some but not all of Dr. Ford's conditions in order for her to testify next week about her allegation of sexual assault in the 1980s by Brett Kavanaugh. Republicans have not agreed with Ford's lawyers that she should only be questioned by lawmakers – not an outside counsel – at Wednesday's proposed hearing. (Politico / USA Today / CNN)

Dr. Christine Blasey Ford's attorney says her appearance at a hearing on Monday is "not possible" but she could testify later in the week. Ford's lawyer sent a request to top Senate Judiciary Committee staffers asking to set up a call with them to "discuss the conditions under which [Ford] would be prepared to testify next week." Ford has been receiving death threats and has been forced to move out of her home. "She wishes to testify," her attorney wrote to the committee, "provided that we can agree on terms that are fair and which ensure her safety. A hearing on Monday is not possible and the committee's insistence that it occur then is arbitrary in any event." Kavanaugh also sent a letter to the committee, saying that he will attend the hearing on Monday "so that I can clear my name." (Washington Post / NBC News / New York Times)

Sen. Diane Feinstein's office has received threats of bodily and sexual harm against her and her staff as a result of her involvement submitting the allegations against Kavanaugh to the FBI. Some of the threats name specific employees. Feinstein is the second woman senator, after Sen. Susan Collins, whose office has reported receiving such threats. "My office has received some pretty ugly voicemails, threats, terrible things said to my staff," Collins said on Wednesday. (Mc Clatchy DC)

3/ Mitch Mc Connell predicts that "in the very near future, Judge Kavanaugh will be on the U.S. Supreme Court" despite Ford not yet testifying. The Senate Majority Leader said "We're going to plow right through it and do our job." (Washington Post / ABC News / CNN)

https://www.cnn.com/2018/09/21/politics/mitch-mcconnell-brett-kavanaugh/index.html

4/ Rod Rosenstein raised the idea of wearing a wire last year to secretly record Trump in the White House and expose the chaos in the administration, according to memos written by Andrew Mc Cabe, then the acting FBI director. Rosenstein also discussed recruiting Jeff Sessions and John Kelly, then the secretary of homeland security, to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove Trump from office. Rosenstein called the report "inaccurate and factually incorrect," adding: "Based on my personal dealings with the president, there is no basis to invoke the 25th Amendment." At least one person who was present for the discussions said Rosenstein was joking. (New York Times / Washington Post / Bloomberg / Associated Press)

https://apnews.com/e84a4acdb4264111804148de5a91661c/Rosenstein-denies-that-he-proposed-secretly-taping-Trump

5/ Trump reversed his demand to immediately declassify documents related to the Russia investigation, including the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court application to wiretap Carter Page. Less than a week later, Trump tweeted that the Justice Department inspector general would instead review the documents, adding that he "can always declassify if it proves necessary." Trump said that while DOJ officials told him the "declassification" of documents "may have a perceived negative impact on the Russia probe," he received calls from "key Allies," who asked him not to release the documents. (Washington Post / New York Times / CNN)

https://www.cnn.com/2018/09/21/politics/donald-trump-fisa-declassification-walk-back/index.html

6/ Robert Mueller is investigating $3.3 million in bank transactions between two of the men who orchestrated the Trump Tower meeting. On June 3, 2016, the money was moved from Aras Agalarov, a billionaire real estate developer close to both Putin and Trump, to Irakly "Ike" Kaveladze, a longtime Agalarov employee who was once investigated for money laundering – the same day that Trump Jr. received an email from Rob Goldstone offering dirt on Hillary Clinton as part of the Russian government's "support for Mr. Trump." In that email, Goldstone told Trump Jr. he was writing on behalf of a mutual friend, Emin Agalarov – Aras' son. The Trump Tower meeting occurred six days later. (Buzz Feed News)

What kind of 'consequences' are we talking about here? Or are they just trying to get the US to back off?
