Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

x4 Last I checked, we weren't building houses on the Ozone Layer.
Five Thirty Eight just out out a bit on it[1]
they’re not sure if the Republicans could do it from a pure logistical perspective, not unless they switch to a new nominee within a week or so. Aparently it takes longer than I thought to get a nominee though, also the senate leaves session in December, though I suppose the lame duck senate could be held for longer to try and get a conformation done. Though I wonder if at that point Flake or someone might tell Mc Connell to get stuffed and just go home.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran538 says that Dems now have an 83.1% chance of taking the House.
Republicans, keep fucking up. We're all rooting for you.
I'm with Hylarn. What defines the third parties we have right now is an unwillingness to play ball with the major parties and a contrarian streak powerful enough that they prioritize calling themselves something different over actually working within the system and getting things done. Until that changes, there's no need for greater third party representation, because the current ones are crap.

It's been fun.Good.
There is nothing inherently moral or positive about being outside the major parties, in fact due to increasing democracy making parties more representative of the people I’d even argue that being from outside the major parties is a negative, as it indicates that one is opposed to the views and interests of the vast majority of Americans (which while occasionally a good thing is largely a bad thing).

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranAlso, as the radical right has so amply demonstrated, it is not very difficult to high-jack one of the two big tent parties. Way before you have enough of a movement going to make for a viable third party, you have enough of a movement going to steal the democratic party out from under the current big-wigs. Primaries and the meetings where things are planned are small and open.
I would like to add my own concurrence that we need better third parties before I'd even consider voting for one. The Greens are a joke: conspiracy nuts being led around by the nose by every toxic and stupid idea out there. In 2016 they were basically stooges for Russian propaganda.
The Libertarians have sold out morally to the GOP since forever and always make a big national show of parading around in silly costumes and being lolrandom rather than actually being serious about governing. I mean, show me a single prominent Libertarian who could be taken seriously as a front man for the party. Rand Paul? He's a GOP sellout. Ron Paul? He's in it to sell gold to idiots. Gary "where's Aleppo" Johnson, king of "I don't give a fuck, I'm just here for the publicity"? Don't make me laugh.
Every time someone suggests what an ideal third party should stand for, it's the Democrats' platform. The lack of self-awareness is mind-blowing.

Johnson's running mate Bill Weld in 2016 was, by Libertarian standards, relatively reasonable. He did at least encourage people to vote for Hillary Clinton near the end. Though perhaps this is because Johnson and the rest of the Libertarians lowered the bar so much.
But yeah...the USA Green Party and the American Libertarian Party are just...shit.

Disgusted, but not surprised"I'd rather people decide to seriously consider a third party. We haven't gotten a president who wasn't part of a major party since GEORGE WASHINGTON"
Why on Earth would you ever want this? Do you want Republicans to control governing trifectas at the state and federal level?
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Washington might have sincerely thought of himself as an independent — but his administration was almost by necessity a Federalist one, because of Alexander Hamilton's colossal influence at the time, and because Jeffersonian ideology was more or less unworkable. Part of the reason Washington's actual presidency is so obscure is that it offers a direct refutation towards the "above politics" moral of the Washington election story. No one wants to really grapple with the fact that Washington couldn't get much done on his own, and had to choose a side.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."From the developing WTF Just Happened Today feed:
The amount of money that has returned to the U.S. as a result of Trump's massive tax cuts is only 3.5 percent of what Trump predicted. Trump predicted that by ending the practice of taxing U.S. companies when they brought home foreign profits, "Over $4 [trillion], but close to $5 trillion, will be brought back into our country." But the latest analysis shows that just $143 billion has been repatriated. Companies recently announced plans to repatriate another $37 billion. Two-thirds of the repatriated money so far has come from just two companies: networking giant Cisco Systems and a drug company called Gilead Sciences. (Daily Beast)
Ted Cruz's Senatorial campaign in Texas sent hundreds of thousands of donation mailers that are disguised to look like official court summons. The outside of the envelopes read "SUMMONS ENCLOSED- OPEN IMMEDIATELY" in large black print, or include a return address that reads "official county summons." Inside, the envelope contains a donation form for the Cruz campaign. These kind of mailers are not illegal as long as they contain a clear disclaimer that indicates who paid for the communication. How... is that mailer thing not illegal?

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Along with everything else that's been said, I would like to remind everyone-in case they've forgotten-that RJ-19-CLOVIS-93 is the person who's constantly asked for info. about past U.S. presidents and appears to have a weird obsession with early President trivia. As such, this may very well also be them saying "Look at what I've learned!"

A few years back people were getting scary robocalls from scammers using "202" (Washington DC) area codes and telling them that they were getting sued by the IRS. Apparently that's going on again, because I got another one, very similar to the old ones, just the other day.
There is no end to the number of ways unscrupulous marketers will try to trick people, and the only sustainable recourse is regulation against such practices, combined with law enforcement to put offenders in prison.
