Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

NY state primaries so far:
- Cuomo looks like he'll get back in with a fairly strong margin. However, the Lt. Governor position, which is elected separately, looks like it will be changing as of now to a candidate who was running to be a check on Cuomo.
- As of this moment, the IDC (a group of Democrats who had thrown the balance of power to Republicans in the state senate) are mostly getting their clocks cleaned. As of my last check nearly all of them are losing or in the fight of their lives. Only 2 look likely to remain in the senate, one is absolutely crushing the competition, the other got off to a fairly strong start, but as the count went on it's become pretty close.
- Zepyr Teachout simply cannot win an election. Vote counting still has a long way to go, but Teachout is in a big hole against Letitia James, her main competition.

Wasn't Mattis able to rein in some of Trump's horrible impulses? Uh-oh.
Do not obey in advance.Maybe he did.
But Trump has still done damaging things and he isn't getting more power to cause more damage, hopefully this just means that he'll do more stupid things domestically and thus weaken his position for midterms.
If Mattis is going out not much is changing, a Trump Presidency is a travesty with or without Mattis. I'm just hoping there's some political advantage to be gotten out of this if it's true.

It seems that polling has swung against Williams, so it looks like incumbents and those favored by incumbents swept the board on the most important elections.
Edit: NYT called Lt. Governor race for Hochul. Cuomo's running mate narrowly has won her race against Jumaane Williams.

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerYep, Hochul got a burst of votes at the right time.
6 of 8 members of the IDC look like they're going to lose, including leader Jeff Klein. The IDC just effectively ceased to exist and I couldn't be happier.

| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |And to top things off, Nixon lost, as expected. Thus ends another celebrity vanity campaign.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. You know, I’m going to disagree with that rather condescending assessment. Someone needed to primary Cuomo, and it looks like six out of 8 IDC members are losing their seats. Nixon had an effect down ballot, and she forced Cuomo to tack left, for whatever good that may do later on. Power concedes nothing without a demand.

I don't think her run was a 'vanity campaign', and its kinda insulting that you'd boil the race down to that. Someone was bound to do it, if not her then Teachout might have made another shot or something.

Considering that candidates of her ilk have turned "progressive" from an adjective to a title you have to earn, I would find it understandable to take such claims with a grain of salt.

I mean, considering this
happened, I don't even remotely feel bad for him. 'DINO' is not in the slightest the worst insult that she could have used.
(For context: The state Democratic Party circulated a leaflet days before the election alleging Nixon did a bunch of anti-semetic things that she never did)
In other words: Pointlessly egging on people who think that the Democratic Party outright rigs elections.

And that article hardly seems unbiased and professional. Especially with titles like "Sleaze and the City" and "An exceptionally underhanded smear lands Andrew Cuomo in hot water". Clearly no agenda there.

...Are you saying the ECONOMIST is trying to undermine a more moderate candidate in favor of a more left wing candidate? Because that's what the Economist is known for. Supporting left-wing economic policy.

That's fair. They seem to have taken it better than the NYT. NYT opinion board was really upset.
Arguably more so than the rise of the Far-right.

Never said there wasn't a reason to primary him. I'm just of the mind that someone who resorts to something like "He's no different from Republicans!" isn't the person for the job. Especially if she has no actual experience in government.
And like I said before, as a Californian I really don't like the idea of a celebrity with no experience becoming a governor.

She also ran for Congress in 2016, and barely lost.
Edit: This is not a great pagetopper...
