The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up]On the contrary. Having Democrats in control of both houses would make it harder for him to get anything done, severely limiting his ability to go off the rails. He'd doubtless whine about on twitter every time anyone stands up to him, but that's not anything he's not doing already.

He’d go off the rails psychologically but not legislatively.

That’s some comfort I guess. Oh wait, nukes, never mind.

No, but based on what we’ve learnt recently they also won’t tell congress that he tried to give said order and should be impeached.

They’ll just ignroe both the order and the fact that he’s detached enough from reality to try and give it.

Apparently Nixon got so wasted that he would occasionally tell his aides to nuke Korea. Kissinger had to tell them to ignore every single word he said after dark.

Just a FYI.

The fact that said orders wern’t instantly reported to Congress to be used in articles of impeachment is a negative about everyone who received said orders.

Another plus would to one or both houses being taken by Democrats would be when a democratic president is in office things would go much smoother for them.

Reddit Bans Qanon Subreddits After Series of Violent Threats.

The community, called /r/Great Awakening, had more than 71,000 subscribers making over 10,000 comments on average per day before it was banned, NBC News reported. A backup subreddit, /r/the_greatawakening, was also banned, along with 17 other Qanon focused communities, including r/Biblical Q and r/Quincels.

The military attitude with things like that is very much “keep it in the house”. They’re not gonna let him nuke anyone, but they’re not gonna talk about it either. This is both to prevent from running afoul of the various laws prohibiting the services from political speech, and because of the “boys club” effect the military has historically had.

They should have sent a poet.

If the Democrats take both, or even one, branch of Congress I'm less worried about Trump nuking Korea than of his screaming "VOTER FRAUD!", declaring martial law and getting his shiny new Supreme Court to rubber stamp it.

If the Democrats take both, or even one, branch of Congress I'm less worried about Trump nuking Korea than of his screaming "VOTER FRAUD!", declaring martial law and getting his shiny new Supreme Court to rubber stamp it.

The President can not declare Martial Law by himself, even in times of crises. It requires either Congress's approval, or for individual States to do so. Lincoln's attempt at declaring Martial Law (and suspending Habeas Corpus) were destroyed by Congress, who then decided to declare Martial Law themselves; on top of the fact that the Martial Law Law only applied to the Rebelling Southern States. There have also been multiple times where State and Territorial Governors declared Martial Law (mostly because of Unions Striking). The entirety of the USA has never been under Martial Law, even during the Civil War and World War II.

So don't worry about Trump and the Conservative Supreme Court from trying to violently take over the Country 'legitimately'. It would require the Military acting against the Constitution and Congress (and potentially against the President as well) for what you worry about to happen.

Quick question on the cult like support of Trump. Do any of you think or have even experienced supporters who would actually jihad themselves for him? I'm not just talking violence, I mean the possibility of them throwing themselves on their sword, or at least to authorities demanding to take them instead. Has it really reached that point?

So, what, are you seriously trying to say that we should not try to take Congress or at the very least the House? That we should let Trump do what he wants? Just because he might get pissy? Because that seems to be the implication here.
