There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

My first time around at college I dropped out of a fairly inexpensive state school after a year, ever since then I’ve exclusively done Community college while working at the same time, so I got 2 different Associates degrees and a certificate program without any debt.

Day 601: "Totally incompetent."
1/ The Department of Homeland Security diverted nearly $10 million from FEMA to help ICE pay for detention and removal operations. A newly released budget document shows DHS diverted the funds from FEMA at the beginning of the hurricane season, which began in June. The money was taken out of FEMA's operations and support budget and was transferred into ICE accounts to pay for additional detention camps and other expenses. FEMA said the monet was not meant for disaster relief and that the $10 million represents an extremely small portion of what is actually being spent on hurricane recovery. A spokesperson for DHS also pushed back on Twitter: "Under no circumstances was any disaster relief funding transferred from @fema to immigration enforcement efforts. This is a sorry attempt to push a false agenda at a time when the administration is focused on assisting millions on the East Coast facing a catastrophic disaster." (New York Times / Axios / Maddow Blog / ABC News)

2/ Trump called the mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico "totally incompetent" after Yulin Cruz criticized Trump's statements about his response to the hurricanes that ravaged Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico last year. Trump tweeted: "We got A Pluses for our recent hurricane work in Texas and Florida (and did an unappreciated great job in Puerto Rico, even though an inaccessible island with very poor electricity and a totally incompetent Mayor of San Juan). We are ready for the big one that is coming!" (ABC News)
3/ Trump signed an executive order to sanction foreign companies, countries and individuals that interfere with U.S. elections. The determination as to whether election interference occurred will be based on findings from U.S. intelligence agencies. The order tasks a range of intelligence agencies with determining if meddling occurred, including the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the CIA, the NSA, and the Department of Homeland Security. It requires any federal agency aware of election interference by foreign entities to submit the information to the Director of National Intelligence for review. (Reuters / CNBC / The Hill)
4/ Investigators are looking into a pair of suspicious money transfers involving people who attended the 2016 Trump Tower meeting. The transfers reveal how Aras Agalarov, a Russian billionaire with strong ties to both Trump and Putin, used overseas accounts to distribute money to himself, his son, and at least two people who attended the Trump Tower meeting. Investigators are focusing on two bursts of transactions: one shortly before the Trump Tower meeting and one immediately after Trump won the 2016 election. (Buzz Feed News / The Hill)
5/ The Trump administration is making it harder for Christian refugees to enter the United States. Despite Trump's promise to help vulnerable Christians around the world, many groups remain in legal limbo while they await a decision on their fate, including a group of Iranian Christians waiting in Austria. The number of Christian refugees allowed to enter the U.S. has dropped by more than 40 percent (roughly 11,000 refugees) over the last year. (NBC News)

A GOP Congressman from New Jersey was caught on tape suggesting that being raised in an orphanage would be a better option for a child than growing up with parents who are LGBTQ. Rep. Chris Smith made the remarks in May when addressing a group of student constituents at a high school. (Asbury Park Press)
Yeah, they're not white like American Christians. Or Jesus.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them. It's quite simple, they voted based on race.
Hence why Catholic Whites went to him overwhelmingly while Catholic Hispanics voted against him overwhelmingly
Re: student debt.
Yup. Whether or not you can go to college at all, and if you do, where you can go and what degree you can get is highly dependent on either extraordinary academic achievement, immense privilege, or luck.
I was very, very fortunate. My parents paid half my undergrad and scholarships paid the other half. I paid for my own teaching licensure program (about 10-12k; I was able to pay it off in 2 years once I was teaching full-time). My decision on whether or not to go to law school was 100% based on whether or not my LSAT score was enough to get me a full ride at the law school in my home town.
I’ve mostly (I did have to buy books, parking passes, pay semester fees, etc) avoided student debt because of that, and because I live with an aunt who asks that I chip in very little toward housing costs. And I don’t have health insurance because having a full-time summer job got me kicked off the state health insurance plan, but the ACA plans are too expensive for me to afford.

x4 And they can't tell the difference between Arabs and Persians, as seen by them denying Iranian Christians, with Iranians generally being considered white by most of the rest of the world, speaking a Indo-European language and Iran being where Aryan originally came from.

538 released their Senate forecast.
Honestly, it's looking better for the Democrats than I thought.
Summary: they give a 1/3 chance for Democrats to win the Senate. Because of the way votes correlate, if Dems win the Senate then they also win the House 99% of the time. So a 1/3 chance of gaining control over both houses of Congress.
That's way more optimistic than I had been.

The most likely seat result seems to be 50-50, which would make things very interesting.
Firstly because Mississippi will actully have its runoff in December to determine who wins that senate seat, so we may not know the results until then, plus even once that is settled there’s the chance of control changing if Pence either steps down or up, as a new VP would need to be aproved by the evenly split senate.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranIf the Democrats pull off a miracle and somehow take back the senate majority, Trumps probably gonna go off the rails even worse then he is now.

I'm glad I was poor enough and just smart enough to qualify for enough federal aid and scholarships that I got through university debt-free.
