The General US Politics Thread

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I want Trump to hook himself up to the lie detector to prove that it works because he's stupid, and for it to explode before he even gets one word out.

There's a good chance that it would view him as honest, lie detectors are terrible pseudoscience that barely work and especially doesn't work for someone like Trump who has a delusional view of reality.

Just as a heads up on the weather front: 4 storms in the Atlantic, Floence heading towards the Carolinas and expect to major when it does, Helene and TD 9 expected to become Issac are heading towards to Caribbean.

And that's not inculding the direct hit Guam is expecting as TS Mangkhutt is expected to be a Super Typhoon when it does.

The GOP needs to go the way of the Whigs so that an at least somewhat rational Conservative party can take it's pace.

That's a nice idea; however, it's impossible to leave thirty percent of the country out in the cold like that. There's no way that honest conservatives can be electable in America without pandering to the far right.

It is very rare that we discover a human being actually capable of using full-blown doublethink.

The power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them… To tell deliberate lies while genuinely believing in them, to forget any fact that has become inconvenient, and then, when it becomes necessary again, to draw it back from oblivion for just as long as it is needed, to deny the existence of objective reality and all the while to take account of the reality which one denies—all this is indispensably necessary.

I'm not claiming to be a medical professional here, but my understanding is that a pathological liar's brain is often wired in such a way that they typically believe what they're saying as they say it. This makes them very good liars, but this form of brain architecture also requires some parts of the brain related to judgement to be smaller than usual. Which in turn causes them to lie all the time, even when it's not a good idea to do so.

Again, I'm not a professional so don't take any of this as fact, and I can't diagnose Trump with anything...but if he was a pathological liar it would wholly unsurprise me.

I think trump is at least a low grade sociopath. He shows many traits for it, overinflated sense of self worth, no impulse control, incapable of feeling shame, lack of empathy.

We should be careful not too take our armchair psychology too seriously; but it would make a lot of sense if he had some form of personality disorder. Not just because he's a bad person per se, but he does seem to have a pathologically bad lack of self-control and is probably self-absorbed in a way that's outright unhealthy.

Being a crap person is not synonymous with sociopathy, no matter how common a belief that is. I honestly doubt Trumpy is a sociopath anyway if one were to actually take a look as to what the traits of sociopathy are, not to mention that it would take a specialist to determine if he was one.

Lack of empathy, lack of impulse control, unwillingness to accept responsibility. Doesn't necessarily means those traits equate to someone being a sociopath, but a sociopath does have those traits.

In addition to what [up] listed, other possible traits is lack of emotion, difficulty understanding emotions, and being deceitfully charming and personable. Trump has the superficial traits of sociopath, but it is a massive mistake to think that we have all the information needed to make that call.

DEAD EVEN: AJC/Channel 2 poll shows Georgia governor’s race is tied

     GA Governor Race
  • Poll conducted by the University of Georgia’s School of Public and International Affairs, for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The race for Georgia governor couldn’t be closer just two months before the election, as an Atlanta Journal-Constitution/Channel 2 Action News poll showed Democrat Stacey Abrams and Republican Brian Kemp deadlocked at 45 percent.

The poll of likely November voters showed the two rivals are fighting to win over a sliver of the electorate: Just 8 percent of the respondents were undecided, and an additional 2 percent support Libertarian Ted Metz.

[Details on poll methods and crosstabs in the article]

The close nature of the race could be an indicator of the enthusiasm mounting behind Democrats trying to flip the state’s top office for the first time since 2002, propelled by Abrams’ embrace of progressive issues in her bid to become the nation’s first black woman elected governor.

But Democrats need only to look to the last statewide election for a cautionary tale. Jason Carter was also tied with Republican Gov. Nathan Deal in several polls at this stage of the race in 2014, only to fall behind as GOP candidates gained strength in the final stretch.

...

Although Kemp is still relying on the White House’s help — Vice President Mike Pence will host a fundraiser for him next week — he has tried to moderate his image for a broader electorate. These days, he’s more likely to mention Deal on the campaign trail than Trump.

The poll offers a reason for that shift. About 63 percent of voters approve of Deal’s performance, while only 1 in 5 disapprove. The high marks came from across the political spectrum, with nearly half of Democrats and 64 percent of independents giving the governor favorable reviews.

...

After bruising primaries that led to landslide victories, both candidates have effectively locked down their bases, with roughly 9 in 10 Democrats backing Abrams and a similar proportion of Republicans behind Kemp.

...

About 14 percent of independent voters — traditionally Georgia’s biggest ideological bloc — aren’t yet committed to a candidate. And many of them consider themselves moderates or conservatives.

Despite spending millions of dollars on TV ads in the most expensive race for governor in state history, each candidate must work to boost his or her likability. About one-quarter of voters have an unfavorable opinion of Abrams and nearly one-third holds that view of Kemp.

Just some local news on the governor's race here. There's much more in the article, including some words from (potential) voters.

I don't think Trump's a psychopath. Psychopathy is fundamentally the personality disorder of not really caring about anything. You'd expect them to be someone with no real values or morals, a history of casual cruelty, but at the same time an odd resistance to groupthink. I mean, Mitt Romney is about what I'd expect from a psychopath politician, not someone like Trump

@Kakuzan: I should note that him being a bad person is what makes me think he has some form of personality disorder, it's the specific way he acts. For example, he seems to have very bad impulse control.

@Hylarn: It's not entirely correct that sociopaths are amoral per se. They (by definition) are incapable of empathy but they do typically develop something that might be called a sense of right and wrong, albeit usually one that's rather bizarre.

Again, I think it's very obvious that, at the very least, much of Trump's observable behavior is consistent with NPD. That's just based on observable evidence.

Here's the DSM-5 Diagosis Criteria:

  • Has a grandiose sense of self-importance.
  • Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love.
  • Believes he or she is “special” and unique.
  • Requires excessive admiration.
  • Has a sense of entitlement.
  • Takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends.
  • Lacks empathy toward the feelings and needs of others.
  • Shows arrogant or haughty behaviors and attitudes.

Several hours ago Trump tweeted one video and retweeted a second video posted by someone else. The first video, which he said 'Happy Anniversary' to was a video clip of Hillary Clinton calling his half his base 'basket of deplorables' and the second video was a retweet of someone uploading Obama's 2011 WHCD response to Trump insulting him by saying at least he'll be remembered as a president.

Man's got some serious insecurity issues. Now, he's tweeting like mad again, so I'm assuming he's watching Fox again.

“Barack Obama talked a lot about hope, but Donald Trump delivered the American Dream. All the economic indicators, what’s happening overseas, Donald Trump has proven to be far more successful than Barack Obama. President Trump is delivering the American Dream.” Jason Chaffetz

“Ford has abruptly killed a plan to sell a Chinese-made small vehicle in the U.S. because of the prospect of higher U.S. Tariffs.” CNBC. This is just the beginning. This car can now be BUILT IN THE U.S.A. and Ford will pay no tariffs!

If the U.S. sells a car into China, there is a tax of 25%. If China sells a car into the U.S., there is a tax of 2%. Does anybody think that is FAIR? The days of the U.S. being ripped-off by other nations is OVER!

“Trump has set Economic Growth on fire. During his time in office, the economy has achieved feats most experts thought impossible. GDP is growing at a 3 percent-plus rate. The unemployment rate is near a 50 year low.” CNBC...Also, the Stock Market is up almost 50% since Election!

Wow, NFL first game ratings are way down over an already really bad last year comparison. Viewership declined 13%, the lowest in over a decade. If the players stood proudly for our Flag and Anthem, and it is all shown on broadcast, maybe ratings could come back? Otherwise worse!

North Korea has just staged their parade, celebrating 70th anniversary of founding, without the customary display of nuclear missiles. Theme was peace and economic development. “Experts believe that North Korea cut out the nuclear missiles to show President Trump......

...its commitment to denuclearize.” @Fox News This is a big and very positive statement from North Korea. Thank you To Chairman Kim. We will both prove everyone wrong! There is nothing like good dialogue from two people that like each other! Much better than before I took office.

Here's a news article on NFL ratings:

The truth about NFL television ratings

Does the NFL have a television ratings problem or not?

Depends on how you look at it.

The 2018 NFL season opened up Thursday night and the ratings were not great by NFL standards. The NFL Kickoff game between the Falcons and defending-champion Eagles drew an overnight rating of 13.4. That essentially means that 13.4 percent of the U.S. households with televisions were tuned in. And that was the lowest rating for the NFL Kickoff game since 2008.

According to Nielsen, NFL ratings saw a 9.7 percent drop last season from 2016. And the drop from 2015 to 2016 was 8 percent.

NASCAR has seen a 19 percent drop in viewership since 2017 and a 29 percent dip since 2016. No NASCAR driver has ever protested the anthem. In fact, the anthem is celebrated more (and, unlike most sports, televised) in NASCAR than any sport. You could make the claim that there is no sport that is more, well, "American'' than NASCAR. Yet its ratings have plummeted more than the NFL.

No television program in all of 2017 had bigger audiences than Sunday Night Football and Thursday Night Football. Of the top 50 most-watched shows in 2017, 37 were NFL games. And do know what was the most-watched cable program of the year? No, not Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead. It was Monday Night Football. And, if you ask any football fan, they'll tell you that Monday Night Football has been a landing spot for bad match-ups and games in recent years.

According to Nielsen, TV ratings for all programs on NBC were down 19 percent in 2017. Fox was down 8 percent. CBS was down 19 percent. ABC was down 15 percent. On and on it goes. TBS, Univision, AMC, Food Network, Lifetime and even Disney saw significant drops in viewership.

What does that tell you?

It says people are cord-cutting. That means fewer cable subscriptions and, thus, lower viewership numbers for everything. The NFL's 9 percent drop in TV viewership is actually much, much lower than the losses seen by networks across the board, suggesting that the NFL ratings are doing well compared to the rest of television.

Those who watch NFL games in bars or in large groups cannot be calculated into the ratings.

And, in the biggest impact on ratings of all, many viewers have become addicted to the NFL Red Zone channel, which jumps from one game to another. Those viewers aren't locked into one game, and that means ratings for individual games suffer greatly.
