Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

NAFTA has had quite a few bad consequences in terms of exploitative labor practices in Mexico.
Overall it's a good thing but it is very much a thing designed for the benefit of corporations over the common people.

We had this argument already. And Cid, who is from Mexico, was very clear about how blaming NAFTA for this is wrong.

Disgusted, but not surprisedSomething I've been curious about for a while, why exactly is that one topic banned? The thing I've heard is that it invites arguments and controversy, but I feel like there aren't many common Tropers who'd take the side of the misogynists in said banned topic. Is it that it actually would invite trolls from 4chan to attack people here? Do they really monitor these threads closely enough to jump at any opportunity to argue about a thing that happened four years ago?
I'm just asking because I've been doing a bit of research on the banned topic, and I'm interested in having a conversation about it. I wasn't really active enough four years ago to take notice of the thing when it happened, so it feels like it happened longer ago than it actually did to me.
When that topic was at it's height you couldn't even drop the name on the forums without it erupting into a massive flamewar.
It's quieted down now and the dust has sorta settled on what it was really about but everyone still tries not to poke it lest we attract more of those types of people.
Oh really when?![]()
One could say something similar about TV Tropes itself. From what I've heard, around the time of the banned topic's events and a bit before I joined the site, there were a lot of bad and weird people here doing bad and weird things to the wiki. TV Tropes has since cleaned up its act and cleaned out a lot of the problematic people, but I feel like the mods still tread lightly for fear of the whole thing reigniting.
The website itself has been cleaned up and the banned topic is officially in the past. The firestorm surrounding both have cooled down. I don't really think the mods need to be so cautious as to have said banned topic still be completely banned.
Sure, end of digression.

Today in political trolling: Paul Ryan’s hand-picked replacement, Bryan Steil, released several minutes of silent footage for right wing PA Cs to use.
The Twitter replies to that are priceless.
"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherSpeaking of Twitter and political trolling, activists are setting up a billboard with Trump's tweets bashing Ted Cruz
just after Trump announced he was going to campaign for Cruz.
The trio of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania are not lost at all. They went for change, but found out that it wasn't what they had in mind at all, realised this, and have turned in force for the democrats again this year already.

Really? Why? Leiberman was singlehandedly responsible for killing the public option on the ACA bill. Granted, that was after the 2008 election, but he did plenty of objectionable crap before then.
