Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trevor Noah's most recent episode on Trump indicates that Trump's fortune was always built on fraud with him having 5 million dollars in 1982 and claiming 100 million (published in Forbes) that he used to borrow the huge amounts of money that he built his empire from (and is still in debt over).
Not a surprise but....god dammit, no one seems to care the Emperor has no clothes.
And you know Pence is behind all of Trump's Israel policies.

Like I said, barring Blue Dogs, your preferred Dem candidate not getting a shot at Congress is not a reason to sit out election day. Period.
Honestly even Blue Dogs aren't that bad, look at Manchin. He's pretty much the anti-Lieberman in that he votes with Republicans when it's going to be passed anyway and never drops the ball when it's a serious vote.
I disagree with them ideologically but they're still undeniably useful.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangHere's a good story on it:

Well this was interesting. An elderly customer of mine who's a staunch Republican commented today that he's now convinced that Trump shouldn't be impeached... he should be hanged over the McCain stuff. Unfortunately, he didn't seem to realize that McCain had deliberately disinvited Trump to the funeral, but I mentioned the half-staff controversy.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"And to the surprise of no one, Trump's morning tweets on Canada were, you guessed it, sourced from what he watched on Fox News
.
I can get behind this. California’s forests are in a really awful state due to fire exclusion, and restoring the natural roll of minor to moderate fire to the landscape should be a priority, especially in the wake of climate change. (Prescribed burning can even act as a carbon offset, by preventing large fires that release even more carbon into the atmosphere.)

California's nature problems cannot be solved by state laws. Their issues are the result of national and global trends regarding climate change, and unfortunately most other states except those controlled by Democrats don't believe climate change is real. This article from New Republic
describes how helpless California really is.
I know that, but if the laws don't make any massive impact, conservatives will use that to their advantage next election cycle.

Yes, treason is still a capital offense in the US.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam Gallagher@Boston Keep in mind that statement is intended as to be taken as sarcastic and backhanded sneering at the Confederacy. To explain the joke, a "Silver Medal" refers to second place. In a two-sided conflict, 2nd place is losing. The Confederates are losers, their current supporters are losers. I'm pointing this out in a manner that's condescending toward the Confederacy.
(I probably should have used the Sarcasm Mode link, I'll concede)

Leviticus 19:34I remember I got in trouble with my family for this:
Great Aunt: General Lee was a great man, he refused to raise his hand against Virginia.
Me: But he could raise his hand against the rest of the United States?
Great Aunt: *glare*
Me: Also, didn't he raise his hand against (West) Virginia anyway when they didn't go with slavery?
