The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump is not a bad tasting medicine. He's poison.
Or at the very least, syrup of ipecac.

Note that ipecac use was discontinued for a reason.

Trevor Noah's most recent episode on Trump indicates that Trump's fortune was always built on fraud with him having 5 million dollars in 1982 and claiming 100 million (published in Forbes) that he used to borrow the huge amounts of money that he built his empire from (and is still in debt over).

Not a surprise but....god dammit, no one seems to care the Emperor has no clothes.

And you know Pence is behind all of Trump's Israel policies.

Nothing new there. Frankly, it is beyond me that he didn't get investigated years ago. His company looks like a giant ponzi scheme from my perspective.

I remember when they interviewed the Apprentice people and they mentioned how Trump's business offices were a skeevy shit hole, so they had to build a whole new set of them for the show based on the Godfather.

Tell me when I said anything like that. What I'm saying is even if even if you think a candidate isn't "sufficiently left" they are still not a Republican, and unless they're an out-and-out Blue Dog, that is more than enough reason to vote for them anyway.

You may not feel good about it, but to be blunt, this isn't about you right now; this is about the future of our country. Like I said, barring Blue Dogs, your preferred Dem candidate not getting a shot at Congress is not a reason to sit out election day. Period.

Honestly even Blue Dogs aren't that bad, look at Manchin. He's pretty much the anti-Lieberman in that he votes with Republicans when it's going to be passed anyway and never drops the ball when it's a serious vote.

I disagree with them ideologically but they're still undeniably useful.

Well this was interesting. An elderly customer of mine who's a staunch Republican commented today that he's now convinced that Trump shouldn't be impeached... he should be hanged over the McCain stuff. Unfortunately, he didn't seem to realize that McCain had deliberately disinvited Trump to the funeral, but I mentioned the half-staff controversy.

And to the surprise of no one, Trump's morning tweets on Canada were, you guessed it, sourced from what he watched on Fox News.

Senate Bill 901 "The bill authorizes a five-year, $1-billion effort to reduce fire threats through tree and brush thinning programs that would include year-round prescribed fire. It would also streamline regulatory approval of fire reducing programs, and loosens some of the existing rules that govern the size of trees that can be removed."

I can get behind this. California’s forests are in a really awful state due to fire exclusion, and restoring the natural roll of minor to moderate fire to the landscape should be a priority, especially in the wake of climate change. (Prescribed burning can even act as a carbon offset, by preventing large fires that release even more carbon into the atmosphere.)

California's nature problems cannot be solved by state laws. Their issues are the result of national and global trends regarding climate change, and unfortunately most other states except those controlled by Democrats don't believe climate change is real. This article from New Republic describes how helpless California really is.

I know that, but if the laws don't make any massive impact, conservatives will use that to their advantage next election cycle.

NO. The Confederate states did not "win" anything. They sent a quarter-million soldiers to die for a cause that was morally bankrupt.

There's no 'silver medal' in this case.

That, and they were all traitors who, by law, should've been executed without mercy.

Yes, treason is still a capital offense in the US.

@Boston Keep in mind that statement is intended as to be taken as sarcastic and backhanded sneering at the Confederacy. To explain the joke, a "Silver Medal" refers to second place. In a two-sided conflict, 2nd place is losing. The Confederates are losers, their current supporters are losers. I'm pointing this out in a manner that's condescending toward the Confederacy.

(I probably should have used the Sarcasm Mode link, I'll concede)

For what it's worth I got what you meant.

But I can certainly understand why someone would be sensitive over it.

I remember I got in trouble with my family for this:

Great Aunt: General Lee was a great man, he refused to raise his hand against Virginia.

Me: But he could raise his hand against the rest of the United States?

Great Aunt: *glare*

Me: Also, didn't he raise his hand against (West) Virginia anyway when they didn't go with slavery?

Yes, treason is still a capital offense in the US.

Killing all the Confederacy for treason seems to defeat the point of ending a civil war.

[up]Hardly, the war ended because we beat them.

Their leadership escaped consequences because we chose that, not because there was some intrinsic law that said they couldn't be punished.
