Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

This particular bit of odiousness probably isn't, but I am quite worried about what'll happen if that project to remove citizenship from recent immigrants gets off the ground
The only implication it has seems to be before she was eight. And I'm really not an export on developmental psychology.
So today's Scandinavia and the World makes a good point: if the right thinks participation trophies are so bad, why do they keep ardently defending Confederate statues?
"Yup. That tasted purple."Not a bad idea, though those statues would almost certainly be vandalized on a regular basis by bigots.
Kind of like how the Emmett Till Sign keeps getting riddled with bullets.
Trump considers linking capital gains taxes to inflation
For reference, this would provide a roughly $100 billion tax cut to the richest demographics.

I personally like my Field of Surrendered Lees idea.
Basically, that would involve putting all the non-historically significant statues of Lee in a Field at Appomattox, with appropriate interpretive signage and programing, explaining the history and meaning of confederate monuments in the United States. Like why they were built, the connection to racial supremacy, cultural context, etc.

Didn't General Lee explicitly say he didn't want any statue or monument built after him or the confederates?
Well, why not honor his wishes in life as well in death?
Oh wait, they don't care.
I'd build some William Tecumseh Sherman statues in the South just to piss them off. With I love the smell of burning confederates in the morning. It smells like victory written on the base.

Inter arma enim silent leges

Sorry for the late reply (this thread moves fast) but Raineh Daze, does that article say how old the woman in question was when she was adopted? Because if she was an older adoptee (and I don't mean that old, but even as low as six or seven) it might have contributed to her current feelings.
