The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Not surprised that this backfired - these are the same people who think free healthcare and education for children are somehow a bad thing.

What's next, trying to discredit somebody by saying they donate blood in their free time?

The Texas GOP's response to the backlash (which comes across as sneering to me, given the stereotypes they've picked):

Based on the reaction to our tweets we can confirm that Beto is in fact going to receive 100% of the vote from Buzzfeed contributors, out of state liberals, and people who use the word "rad." We feel very owned :'(

I sincerely hope the GOP collapses into itself when they no longer are in the majority of government.

They're just mad cause their smear campaign didn't work. That's what the right does: cover their hurt feelings with bravado.

Also one of the responses to the tweet is just a string of gifs of Ted Cruz being a doofus.

Mc Sally won in Arizona, she's pretty much Republican Establishment lite and Mc Cain 2.0.

She actully tacked hard into Trump land during the primary, she’s not a natural Trumpist but she’s become one of them now. That’s probably a big part of why she won the primary.

As I've said before there aren't really any decent Republicans, this is simply more evidence of that.

White House ethics lawyer Stefan Passatino is leaving the Trump administration as of tomorrow. Passatino helped several White House officials grapple with a string of ethics violations and controversies, including Kellyanne Conway's March 2017 violation of of government ethics laws when she told people to "go buy Ivanka's stuff" during an interview on Fox News.

I imagine an ethics lawyer in the White House is a completely superfluous position.

Well, can't say I'm surprised by this news. Trump is putting a freeze on pay increases for Federal employees, saying the budget can't support it. Meanwhile...

Pay for military personnel will not be affected by Trump's decree; instead, US troops are due a 2.6% pay increase next year. Trump frequently trumpets the military pay raise while listing his administration's accomplishments. The raise came as part of a massive $716 billion defense spending bill that Trump signed earlier this month.

Remember - it doesn't count as spending if it's Defense spending!

[down]

While that may be true, it's disingenuous as hell to say "Well we can't afford it!" while earmarking higher and higher budgets for military expenditures, and I seriously doubt a huge percentage of that's going towards paying the troops.

They need a pay increase, bluntly.

The Air Force is having a serious crisis with pilot retention because the pay and benefits for civilian pilots are much better than military ones. It's so bad they're even going to let enlisted men pilot aircraft soon, something we haven't done since the beginning of WW2

Oh really when?

Who the hell still uses "rad"? It's not the 90's anymore.

I don't recall anyone using 'rad' in the 90s either. I remember it cropping up in certain American films in the early 90s, but no real person used the word because it was a very good way to make yourself look like a complete nit.

But perhaps the word was more widespread in the US than the UK?
