Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I saw an attack cartoon on Maxine Waters that has her telling a suit-wearing Trump staffer "you're not welcome anywhere anymore!", then bending down to offer a scruffy-looking Mexican man a hand and saying "welcome to the United States, make yourself at home" or something.
Naturally, all the comments (on Tumblr, where I saw it) were like... wait, this is an attack cartoon? Written by a Republican? This is intended to be criticism, not praise?
It's been fun.I don't agree with those fools at all, but I think their point with that absolutely brain-dead cartoon is that "Democrats care more about "illegals" than they do about citizens!" The underlying question I suppose they have is: "Does a country or government have more obligation to their natural-born citizens than to the rest of the world?"

Nah the point they were making was "Democrats care about brown people instead of white people", Republicans have always used their opposition to illegal immigration merely as a pretext for their actual racist beliefs.
See the Trump administrations efforts to curtail legal immigration and go after Hispanic natural born citizens.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji Yang
Mc Sally won in Arizona, she's pretty much Republican Establishment lite and Mc Cain 2.0.
But that just means her awfulness is more subtle, lets not confuse not being batshit insane with moderation. Republicans winning in this climate are beholden to the party and thus at-best only slightly terrible.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangYeah the Trump administration has more or less wiped away the facade that their opposition to undocumented immigration has anything to do with laws and is anything other than perfidious bigotry.

One being:
[A bunch of smiling, drinking Germans, kissing girls and looking like they're having fun]
Narrator: Do you wish to be like this?
[Switch to smiling military uniformed people working laborously to spread pamplets]
Narrator: OR THIS!
Me: The former?

George Papadopoulos decided to accept a plea deal from Robert Mueller and plead guilty to lying to the FBI. He admitted to lying to the FBI about his contacts during the campaign with a professor who had "substantial connections to Russian government officials." Padadopoulos was strongly considering backing away from the deal earlier this month, but decided to accept the deal and cooperate with Mueller's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Welp, Trump has outdone himself in following Oceania's playbook, tweeting the following.
What’s going on at @CNN is happening, to different degrees, at other networks - with @NBC News being the worst. The good news is that Andy Lack(y) is about to be fired(?) for incompetence, and much worse. When Lester Holt got caught fudging my tape on Russia, they were hurt badly!
That's right, he's claiming that the interview with Holt was somehow doctored
.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about these investigations is not whether they can destroy Donald Trump, who I suspect will serve out the remainder of his term without being impeached.
Perhaps the most interesting thing will be that it will help clarify, along with Trump's own You Have Failed Me tendencies, that the Republican cronies will realize that being his servant is not a path to rewards but jail or having their careers destroyed.
