The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Seriously, requiring guns be stored properly would do wonders to reduce the death-by-guns stats in the USA from the reduction in suicides and accidental discharges.

I think Bill Nelson can rest a little easy now as Rick Scott's path to the Senate just got a little more complicated.

Maybe only loosely related to politics, but what happened to the various Talk Shows? Not a single video upload in over a week.

Huh, that's quite a strong progressive platform. Should hopefully bode well for Democratic voter turnout.

I'm also hearing that a lot more young people voted this time around too (this is my first time being able to vote in a primary), and it is good news if true

The poll seemed to have really downplayed enthusiasm among youth and people of color.

On a side note, though, Republicans still turned out in greater numbers than Dems, so turnout will be a huge factor to where this goes in the general.

I'm hoping it is not indicative of any trend. One reason could be that there was less concern for the primaries compared to the upcoming midterms.

This is why you don’t rely on results from landline-only polls in 2018 [lol][lol][lol]

Republicans had a higher turnout than Dems, but the Democratic candidate in Florida still won his primary?

Going back to the Puerto Rico death numbers. These numbers make it the third worst natural disaster in US history, behind the Hurricane which hit Galveston in 1900, and the 1906 San Fransisco Earthquake, and if we add single man-caused disasters, this puts it in 4th with 9/11 right before it.

[up][up][up][up][up]This is also Florida, full of cranky, retired old people with nothing to do but electorally stick it to younger generations, plus the large Cuban population leaning strongly GOP. I would not read all that much into it in terms of an overall national wave-Florida has been pretty Red for a while.

In general, most primaries outside of California are going to have higher Republican turnout than Democratic turnout; for some reason Democrats tend to have low primary turn out but good general election turnout.

Primaries are agianst same party, so democrats vs democrats and republicians vs republicians to see who makes it on the ballot.

And the primaries in flordia are closed, meaning that it was only democrats voting on the democrats, and only republicians the republician.

Maybe only loosely related to politics, but what happened to the various Talk Shows?

They’re on break. The shows don’t get enough episode to broadcast year round so they tend to take several weeks off at points throughout the year.

Back to Florida, this should help Nelson, he will need high black turnout if he is going to hold onto his seat.

Also, since Florida has closed primaries, all the voters who are left of center but don’t like the actual Democratic Party wouldn’t necessarily be registered as Dems and thus able to vote.

RE: Talk shows

I think most of them took the week off prior to Labor Day, or possibly the week before and after Labor Day.

Huh, I voted for Gillium, but expected Graham to win. I would have been happier with either — my main beef with Graham is that she's the daughter of Bob Graham, who was governor in the 80s, and I'm not really a fan of dynastic politics.

Here's hoping the general election goes well. DeSantis would be an even worse governor than Rick Scott has been. Scott is a fairly standard personally corrupt, "small government except when I can use government to bully minorities" Republican. DeSantis is an incompetent Trumpist lunatic.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

[up][up] Many Oath Keepers are police, in some states you may be able to get the national guard deployed.
