Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Oh please please please Trump fire Sessions before the midterms, I'm sure that clusterfuck won't have any negative effects on you!
(also the violence bit is just Trump being his normal incompetent fascist self)

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangFlorida polls just closed and Ron DeSantis (the Trumpist candidate and a repulsive human being) is so far leading the GOP gubernatorial primary by a landslide. Yikes.
If this thing goes down to DeSantis vs. Graham, it's going to be very nasty. Question is whether or not Graham can turn out the base to vote, and I'm not too optimistic about that given Florida's high senior population.

That's been one of my biggest concerns about this presidency: that Trump will actually make a Second Civil War a self-fulfilling prophecy. We're one step closer to being Venezuela.

x7 That's another thing, open and concealed carry should really not be something civilians can do. Unless you can demonstrate some absolute need for a weapon, and prove without a doubt that you're qualified to carry one you have no business doing so.
Let's not start with the alarmism again in this thread. Things are plenty bad already without having to resort to that.
Betting on the Republican base to behave decently is a fool's wager, this is simply more evidence of that.
Seriously, there are enough bad things without wasting time talking about civil wars.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangOn the plus side, It appears Florida Democrats are sick of Alan Grayson
.
I kinda like Grayson, but he's been kind of a bother to Democrats for a while. He initially lost his seat because of an ad where he manipulated video of his opponent to paint him as a religious extremist like a Taliban priest. He ran successfully again for the 9th district, only to step down in a failed run for Senator (and we all know how that went). This article delves into his second (and possibly final) comeback
.
As for the gubernatorial race, I was right: it will be DeSantis vs. Graham
.
So basically Trump vs. Clinton redux. Oh dear.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherHe’s facing “ethics questions and spousal abuse allegations” according to Five Thirty Eight, also he’s trying to unseat an incumbent Dem who represents the district well demographically (Soto is from Purto Rico (being the first Purto Rican congressmen from Florida) and the district is heavily Purto Rican).

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranSo with DeSantis vs. Graham in the Florida gubernatorial race, it's basically Trump vs. Clinton redux, with a centre-left candidate battling against an ultraconservative, nationalist candidate. And we all know where that went.
Unless Graham can motivate the base with her support for gun control, police reform and taxation on the wealthy, I can see DeSantis' support rising pretty quickly, especially since he's not quite a Roy Moore or Corey Stewart.
For the Parkland movement, this will either be a historic victory, or an irreparable loss that could see the movement lose strength quickly.
EDIT: Wait a minute, it looks like Graham is losing strength. Looks like that tweet got deleted quickly.

I just noticed. The tweet from Wasserman projecting the race just disappeared.
And to nobody's surprise, Rick Scott appears to have clinched the GOP nomination for Senate. RIP Bill Nelson.
UPDATE: Got a feeling the Dem primary for governor will head to a run-off between Gillium and Graham. So far it looks like Republicans have the turnout edge (not surprising due to the large number of seniors there, but yikes).

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherSon of a bitch.
It looks like Gillum will actually win this. Gillum vs. DeSantis for governor.
Think about that.
UPDATE: Dave Wasserman calling
Dem Gov primary in Florida for Andrew Gillum. No runoff.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherFor those curious Gillum is a black man who has campaigned on abolishing Stand Yoru Ground and ICE, so if he wins it’s no establishment vs Trumpster fight, it’s full on social progress vs reactionaries.
If he can motivate up black turnout it might also help Nelson, as if large numbers of black voters are going to the polls for the governor’s race they should vote in the senate race as well.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranBasically it's a more hardcore version of Abrams vs. Kemp in GA. If Gillum and Abrams win their respective gubernatorial races it could fundamentally alter the Southern political landscape for years to come.
"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherThe only big storm cloud hovering above Gillum is the fact that his city is under FBI investigation for corruption
.
Even if he's not implicated in the probe, DeSantis could use the investigation to his advantage.
"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherDecision Desk HQ calls the FL gov Dem primary for Gillum
.
Only a matter of time 'til AP and other news orgs call it for him.
UPDATE: ABC 9 Orlando calls Dem Gov primary for Gillum
.
UPDATE: NBC 2 Orlando calls Dem Gov primary for Gillum
. Folks, it's over.
UPDATE: AP projects Andrew Gillum wins FL Gov Dem primary
.
It's official. It will be Gillum vs. DeSantis in November.

Trump privately revived the idea of firing Sessions this month, according to people familiar with the discussions
One such discussion occurred in early August, during the trial of Paul Manafort, his former campaign chairman. On Aug. 1, the second day of the trial, Trump tweeted that Sessions should end the special counsel investigation.
“This is a terrible situation and Attorney General Jeff Sessions should stop this Rigged Witch Hunt right now, before it continues to stain our country any further,” Trump wrote. “Bob Mueller is totally conflicted, and his 17 Angry Democrats that are doing his dirty work are a disgrace to USA!”
In subsequent talks with his lawyers and advisers, Trump said what he really wanted to do was fire Sessions, the people said.
His attorneys, Rudolph W. Giuliani and Jay Sekulow, advised him that Mueller could interpret such an action as an effort to obstruct justice and thwart the investigation — already a major focus of the inquiry, the people said.
Giuliani confirmed that he and Trump have discussed Sessions’s possible removal, but declined to offer details of their talks.
“If there is any action taken, the president agrees with us that it shouldn’t be taken until after the investigation is concluded,” Giuliani said. Sekulow referred questions to Giuliani.
White House aides have tried to convince Trump that firing Sessions could trigger more problems than it would solve. A senior White House official said the goal was to delay a firing, because Trump’s advisers do not think that stopping it is possible.
Others are urging the president to jettison current Justice Department leaders.
“He needs to fire Sessions, he needs to fire Rosenstein,” said Doug Deason, a major Republican donor. “They haven’t represented him or us well.”
'These are violent people': Trump reportedly told Christian leaders there will be 'violence' if the GOP loses in midterms
Trump suggested Democrats would "quickly" and "violently" overturn gains he's made for conservative Christians, according to excerpts of the closed-door meeting obtained by NBC News.
"You're one election away from losing everything that you've got," Trump allegedly said. "The level of hatred, the level of anger is unbelievable."
Trump apparently went on to say that the midterm elections are not only a referendum on him.
If Republicans lose big to Democrats, Trump reportedly warned, "they will overturn everything that we've done and they'll do it quickly and violently, and violently. There's violence. When you look at Antifa and you look at some of these groups — these are violent people."
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
