Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I disagree, it's an official statement and is not a mere rumor.
Furthermore you may have a point if were using this to insult Gamers or Gaming, but we're not. Our position is the same regardless if he's a Gamer or not and thus even if he's not a Gamer it has zero relevance.

One big problem with that: the Senate (which, barring something spectacular, will almost certainly stay in GOP's hands) and President Trump will never sign off on any gun control bill passed in the House, and even if the Senate miraculously passes gun control legislation, Dems won't have the votes to override an inevitable presidential veto.
If gun control advocates are serious about getting federal gun control forward, they should be focused on getting veto-proof majorities in the House and Senate. Unfortunately, structural advantages for the GOP make that impossible.

State legislatures and Governors exist, yes Federal gun control isn't going to happen until we have a Democratic Congress+President but if a wave occurs and Democrats sweep through local positions then very real progress on gun control can still occur.

State laws can only do so much to stem gun violence. California is having to deal with multiple guns coming from states like Nevada, Arizona and Oregon, neither of whom have gun laws as strict as California's.
Plus there's the possibility that an activist Supreme Court will nullify all those laws like they did with Washington D.C. and Chicago.

Not if the guns in question are illegal trafficked and the states that are the source of those crime guns do nothing to stop the trafficking.
And again, there's the possibility that the Supreme Court can strike all those strict gun laws down as unconstitutional, setting back gun policy by decades.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherWe only have the LA Times reporting about something witnesses have said. For one, witnesses can be wrong. And two, we don't know if there is about the player losing the game and going amok, it is entirely possible that this was a planned attack.
I am sorry about being such a stickler about it. It's possible that there will be an official statement which confirms the scenario above. But I think that one huge problem we have nowadays is that everyone runs with the tiny bit of news and often there is read more into it than there is actually there.

Exactly. It's why France couldn't stop terrorists from getting long rifles and military weaponry: they all came from out of the country!
And that's why gun control activists are dejected despite all the progress in the state level.

I said it would make things better not that it would make them perfect.
Thus all of these points are irrelevant, local legislatures have a great deal of power in our system and it is incredibly foolish to ignore that when discussing any issue.
If the Supreme Court decides to try to strike down something as popular as gun control then they will simply be harming their own power which will make it easier for us to pack the court and thus pass gun control and other necessary reforms. So I don't see that as necessarily a bad thing.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. It just somehow went unheard.
Contrary to popular belief, the borders in Europe are NOT completely open, there is still border police stopping vehicles. Just not directly at the border.
But the number of weapons within the country is only tangible related to how accessible they are anyway.

Obama and W Bush will speak at Mccain's funeral, Trump was told to stay away.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/25/us/politics/john-mccain-funeral.html
Yeah, I might not like Mc Cain, but he truly doesn't deserve that Trump turns up in order to make his funeral all about himself. He will try to seize the day anyway but sending of an insulting tweet.
May not be too important but I'm surprised this hasn't gotten national media attention: White House advisor Stephen Miller has about $1,001 to $15,000 worth of stock in Disney, per his public financial disclosures
.
If I were Disney, I'd want to avoid yet another PR disaster and buy that white nationalist's stock back.

And lots of people buy marginal levels of stocks from public companies, you can't stop assholes from being low level shareholders.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. It's just that with the recent James Gunn situation and the backlash against Disney for pandering to lowlifes like Mike Cernovich, this revelation just makes them look even worse.

That's good enough for me, if it's not a gamer we'll get news to the contrary.
Still whether they were part of the tournament or not is besides the point, our country's practice of allowing anyone regardless of their personal qualities to get a gun is insane and stupid. Hopefully after the midterms the Democratic Party will have the power to work on reducing this madness.
