Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

While Democrats spoke at great length about subjects hard to comprehend.
And thus were always giving ground.
Well, nevermind, then. If a character from some movie or whatever said it, it must be true.
Look, dumbing things down and calling out Republicans literally every single one of their misdeeds isn't going to make independents and leftists that were previously cold to Democrats warm up to them any more. They've made their choice, and once their justifications for making it no longer hold up, they'll just make up new ones.
i'm tired, my friendWhat bollocks.
Any reasonable news organisation would refuse to give air time to proven liars, yet how often is Kellyan Conway on cable TV? How many “has Trump finally become presidential?” stories did we have after the State of the Union?
Even when they do call Trump out they only call out Trump, how often do CNN adress the fact that the Republicans want to roll back social security and leave thousands to die? How often do news stations bring up that the reason the opioid epidemic is so bad is because Republicans won’t fund local healthcare? How often do they talk about the fact that it’s not just Trump but almost the entire Republican Party that has thrown its lot in with a hostile foreign power against the Democrats? How often do we see it mentioned that even with open criminality being admitted to the Republicans will not move against Trump because they care more about power than the rule of law?
Bothsidism is alive and well in America, just because Trump gets occasionally called stupid doesn’t mean it is dead.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI read an article in the local newspaper a few days ago that said the Democrats are deliberately treading lightly this election season. The reason being, if they kept attacking Trump and calling for his impeachment, it would cause the Trumpeteers to rally around him and strengthen his voting base. So, instead, they're focusing on issues that don't point directly to Trump and his idiotic policies.
Somehow, I don't think it'll help matters much...
This Space Intentionally Left Blank.Basically, I fundamentally disagree with the premise:
"The emotional voters are all Trumpists."
It's bad politics and doesn't reflect reality. There's a kind of weird idea that the votes of people who vote from their hearts and anger or "low information" voters are somehow any less of a vote.
Enflamed passions vs. softball peddling and kids gloved has already failed once.
Technically multiple times. Obama won on enflamed passions.
Because a huge portion of his success was, "Fuck Bush."

I disagree, by focusing on ways to make things better they're giving people something to rally around. Trump might be enough to inspire people to vote against him but talking about impeachment now is massively preemptive, it's far better to behave like adults and wait until the investigation runs its course.
It's far better to give people a reason to vote for oneself then to talk about the other guy, as Clinton showed that just wasn't enough (yes I know she had actual policy but people didn't think she did and that was the biggest difference).

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangIt makes sense too, at this point talking about impeachment would look overly partisan and increase the Republican turnout. Hence why the Republicans are talking about it constantly, that and they don't really have any policy to offer that the public likes.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangMy interpretation
Everyone expects to be wealthy because of the American dream so nobody thinks of themselves as poor, which is I how interpret the phrase without Googling
How close am I those that know?

have a listen and have a link to my discord server"Amercia has no poor people, just temporarily displaced millionaires"
It's a misquote of Steinbeck. An actual quote, not one of those things commonly attributed to someone like Einstein and the definition of insanity.
John Steinbeck once said that socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.
Basically, due to the abundant availability of land due to the shitty treatment of Natives, huge numbers of poor people from Europe ended up becoming landowners and that created the American Dream. The success stories capturing the imagination far more than the vast number of horrific failures or the fact it was built on the labor of the enslaved/exploited.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Americans have a real problem with understanding that they don't have as much agency as they think they do.
All those poor coal workers who voted for Trump really do believe that one day they're going to be millionaires if they keep at it and don't believe that there's a vast system of economics and inequalities in place to keep them poor.
This is actually where the term "American Exceptionalism" came from. Joseph Stalin invented the term when speaking about how communism could never gain a serious foothold in the US.
Oh really when?Mind you, America's wealth can and COULD be used to make a paradise for much of the world (at least compared to most of the world's standards).
And quality of life is pretty damned good here for a lot of people.
Not everyone but running water, roof, and food are available for the majority of Americans except in the poorest of regions (ala my state). Its part of the reason the Republicans are so furious because the poor are hard to create a system to actively kill in the USA.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.I don't feel an ounce of sympathy or the like for his death, to be honest. That being said... What's the procedure for filling a death-induced vacancy in the US Senate?

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.

On the Good Fight, Christine Baranski's character mentioned that the niceness of the Democrats was frequently taken advantage of as the Republicans spoke clearly and plainly when they were lying.
While Democrats spoke at great length about subjects hard to comprehend.
