Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Oh yes, god forbid the Democrats worry about the butthurt feelings of Republicans who accuse them openly of being pedophiles.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. The argument there is that the Democrats gain from not calling the Republicans the poor hating murderers they are.
More than they gain from saying they're grandma murdering criminals.

At least in Idaho, you still need to physically go to a dmv office to get a license. I did when I renewed mine last year.
So online resources don't help much there and potentially makes a trip to get a license or ID seem more trouble than it's worth.

The problem is that dropping to the Republicans' level can present the equally bad image of Chaotic Stupid.
Nobody here cares about the Republicans, but if someone on the fence decided to vote R or not vote at all because such tactics present an entirely avoidable "both sides are the same" image, that's a loss nobody needs.
Stay the course and, at worst, nothing changes, but it might convince some of those fencers that the Democrats are different and worth voting for.

Yeah, people made it out to be like Republicans accepted he was a sexual predator and just didn't care, but it was more like the ones who were still voting for him didn't actually believe the stories were true. Which is a different, but still very serious issue.
And Republican turnout as I recall was pretty depressed from the whole thing, many a fair number did believe and thus didn't vote for him, even if they still didn't vote Democratic.

Perosnly I’m for outright calling Republicans out on their policies that result in deaths, but that’s not the same as playing dirty or sinking to their level.
Also it has to work, remember that many voters are so convinced that both sides are similar and reasonable that they will deny that Republicans hold positions that they admit to, because such positions are monsterous and voters are told constantly that Republicans aren’t monsters.
The chance has to come from more that Democrats, it has to come from the media who have a vested interest in pretending that the Republican Party is largly made up of reasonable people presenting reasonable ideas.

All media asides from openly right-wing ones are constantly calling Trump out on his bullshit, Fox News too when it's necessary, like the Helsinki Summit. If moderate voters still feel both parties are the same, it's the Democrats' fault and they need to step up their game.

Life is unfair...
They need to reach out, promote campaign ads which show the Republicans' dirty tricks, which there have been an astonishing number of this cycle. Or help them understand Trump isn't just some ordinary president, what with his attacks on his country's own institutions.

That doesn't change what I've said. Bothsidesism is an intellectually lazy frame of mind people take to because informing oneself on the policies of the Parties and their members and making a decision based on what you've learned is too hard for them. That's not Democrats' fault.
Well said.
If the ignorant undecided voters (but I repeat myself) need to be led by the nose then that's one thing but to blame the Democrats is just egregious, the voters are responsible even if the party should never say as such.

This is the kind of thing that makes me think Democrats need to be nastier, louder, and harder.
