Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Bills are not being suggested because they'll pass, they're being suggested to set precedent and encourage other Democrats to support them if/when we control Congress.
That and the attack ads for Republicans voting against it are always useful.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangIn regards to Trump, I'm fairly certain that news has broken of how much he's in bed with Russia several times, but each time he's shrugged it off, and it's already established that the GOP are tunneled so far up Trump's arse they can see out of his mouth. I'm honestly quite cynical about these revelations having much of an effect, especially on the voting public (given that the left are baying for Los Naranja Grande's blood and the right deify him). If this does demonstrably hurt him though, I'll be happy.
TL;DR: I'll believe it when I see it.
We can choose to be better. That, or Trump decides that because it's the state that produced Obama, he can treat it the same way he's treated everything else he's decided is connected to Obama.
Given how petty Trump is, I can see him not wanting to help Hawai'i just because Obama came from there (Birther myths not withstanding).
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.it should be noted that Hawaii is such a blue state, I don't think they even have a republican presence there. they are one of the safest blue states out there, election wise.
I doubt the current administration will give a shit if they get hit.

I'm afraid I can't explain myself, sir. Because I am not myself, you see?I can assure you Mitch Mc Connell has murdered a lot of poor Appalachian white women and their babies. In fact he's quite annoyed that they don't seem to be dying off in the numbers he'd hoped because of church support and charity.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.
x2 Pretty much; every Federal Representative of Hawaii (Representatives, Senators, and Governor) is Democrat, their State Senate only has Democrats, and their State House has 5 Republicans out of 51 (they used to have 6 Republicans, but they kicked out their former Minority Leader for being Anti-Trump last year).
Hawaii is also the only State with an Asian Majority, and the State with the lowest percentage of White People.
I doubt the current administration will give a shit if they get hit.
I am not talking about electoral consequences within Hawaii, but rather as a result of the general public seeing the Republicans so publicly botching/ignoring destruction and suffering within a US state.
And before anyone says anything, no Puerto Rico is not a state and their suffering is for all intents and purposes invisible.

I'm talking about practical consequences.
Of course Puerto Rico is part of the US and should receive the appropriate attention as a result of that, but it's not a state and thus doesn't have power to actually make a case for themselves or push the government to actually do something.
Defacto colonies don't tend to do well with an indifferent suzerain state.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangWell, to be more specific, they're ideologically opposed to helping anyone who isn't their direct constituent.
If something happens in a Republicans state they'll lobby for money for it, unless it happens to hit minority and/or Democratic leaning areas; those people should just stop waiting for a government handout.

Pence is in Houston to commemorate the one year anniversary of Hurricane Harvey.
He has really bad timing based on what I read over on the Houston subreddit, coming in and shutting down Interstate 45 right before rush hour. At least Trump's entourage scheduled a better time to come in and shut down roads when he came in after the Santa Fe shooting.

For me it was just pattern recognition. Most of the time someone used "fake news" unironically, they were full of crap.
It's like how nowadays when I see someone complain about "SJ Ws" unironically, I ignore them.
Disgusted, but not surprised

Just slap some pictures of Appalachian white women losing their white as snow babies and the bill might be...
Ignored as usual, the Reps don't give a fuck unless you are making a 6 figure or higher monthly income and contribute to their campaigns.
