The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So this happened on Maddow apparently.

Lanny Davis, Michael Cohen's lawyer, to @maddow: "I can tell you that Mr. Cohen has knowledge on certain subjects that should be of interest to the special counsel and [he] is more than happy to tell the special counsel all that he knows."

"...not just about the obvious possibility of a conspiracy to collude and corrupt the American democracy system in the 2016 election which the Trump Tower meeting was all about,"

"but also knowledge about the computer crime of hacking and whether or not Mr. Trump knew ahead of time about that crime and even cheered it on."

[up]What a tease. Cohen better hope he has something real to trade, because the 3-4 years he is already signed up for are just the appetizer.

Couple bits of big news regarding the FCC and Net Neutrality.

First off - surprise surprise, the FCC was never hacked and Pai, being the shitstain he continues proving himself to be, is laying the blame wholly upon the Obama-appointed Chief Information Officer David Bray.

Second, and fuuuuuck Verizon for this bullshit: because they were caught throttling the internet of California firefighters. Namely, OES 5262, which serves as a mobile coordination center, and which is currently coordinating the local government resources responding to the Mendocino Complex Fire. Oh, and the department had an Unlimited Data Plan, but saw its speeds throttled to 1/200 or less than normal speed once they hit 25 GB of use. But they were oh-so-kind to the Fire Department by restoring speeds later... after the department signed up for a more costly plan.

I desperately hope this is the first thing Pai sees on his desk tomorrow morning.

[up] Why? That would make Pai happy, that is EXACTLY what he wants by killing net Neutrality....

He is a former head of Verizion, they screwed over firefighters and made money off of it? That would MAKE his day.

@Ramidal Surr I'm under no illusion that Gomer and his buddies will even be able to get some anti Democratic revolution off the ground. Far more likely is the FBI HRT marshal up were they to try and we get either the Branch Davidsons, they surrender pracefully or choose to go out in a blaze of glory. Here's hoping for the second conclusion.

[up] I just had a look at the Twitter handle you mentioned, and it's an active account. Last posts were a couple of hours ago.

[up][up]I don't know anything about him. I quoted because I saw it doing the rounds among the newscaster sites, so figured I'd quote the source instead of the news filter. If he's unreliable, I'll make sure not to quote him again.

Edit: Okay, I've done some digging. I quoted him because he was being sold as a lawyer and professor commenting on the legal implications of the public announcement, but his state's Bar Association says he hasn't been an active member or practised law in years and it looks like he's actually an assistant professor of English. So, due to misleading credentials, I've pulled the tweet.

Thanks for the heads up, wisewillow.

Not particularly, just a typical "no collusion" rant. Looks like Megalitz's source was right.

[up][up][up] No problem. With how fast the news cycle is, I try to do my best to check sources and credentials; he’s been on my radar before for making grand pronouncements without much backing. He goes viral frequently, but he’s rarely right, and he has a bad habit of being misleading about his credentials.

Also, as a law student, I feel an obligation to make y’all aware that the word “lawyer” is a very suspicious credential to me. If somebody is practicing, typically their credential will be what they’re doing, such as professor of X law at X University, federal prosecutor for X state, etc. Not to mention the fact that somebody who does nothing but divorce cases is still a lawyer, but that doesn’t mean that they would necessarily have valuable, accurate commentary about a constitutional issue.

Wyldchyld (Old as dirt)
#252768: Aug 22nd 2018 at 5:03:15 AM

Yes, they push the 'professor' route, but I notice with hindsight that they don't say what he's a professor of (I normally catch this). As it turns out, he's not even a full professor. He's only an assistant one. In fairness to the lawyer comment, that was me — they keep using the word 'attorney' (similar problem, I know). But that's a good tip for how practising individuals are likely to introduce themselves for those of us who aren't American.

I usually do check source credentials first. Dropped the ball this time, however.

I apologize if this was already posted.

Ex-Donald Trump lawyer Michael Cohen to 'spill all' - and would reject pardon

Hmm.. something tells me that Cohen doesn't like how Trump treated him.

This is exactly why you treat your subordinates at the very least with a modicum of courtesy and protection, otherwise they have no reason to be loyal to you if you can't silence them.

[up] Classic Narcissist. He demands loyalty from everyone around him, but has no loyalty himself.

Like clockwork, he’s distancing himself from Cohen.

If anyone is looking for a good lawyer, I would strongly suggest that you don’t retain the services of Michael Cohen!

I feel very badly for Paul Manafort and his wonderful family. “Justice” took a 12 year old tax case, among other things, applied tremendous pressure on him and, unlike Michael Cohen, he refused to “break” - make up stories in order to get a “deal.” Such respect for a brave man!

Michael Cohen plead guilty to two counts of campaign finance violations that are not a crime. President Obama had a big campaign finance violation and it was easily settled!

Well, Sean Hannity thinks Cohen was forced by prosecutors to change his story.

So yeah, don't expect any kind of wavering support from Trump's fiercest allies.
