Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

CNN is reporting that there are, at most, 400 far-right marchers. The counter-protestors are said to number in the thousands. No reports of violence so far.

Nah he wouldn't do that, he's all about false equivalences and talking about "both sides". Which allows him to nod to them without actually supporting them outright, he's not going to go so far as to actually support them.
I love when the alt-right marches, it's a lovely show of strength for the opponents of bigotry.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangThe Neo-Nazis are having a serious issue with the more baseline Trumpists. Specifically, the Neo-Nazis are irritated the latter don't want to look like Nazis. Not because they're disagreeing they're white supremecists who hate blacks and Mexicans but because it turns out a lot of people hate Nazis.

My head fucking hurts after reading this article. It's like they are the lamest sons of bitches on the planet as well as being evil.
Mind you, the implications of, "stay under the radar" are creepy. Like Hydra and the Sith (which real people have used as examples).

My response: Then don't be a worthless, soul-shriveled Nazi douchebag.
Leviticus 19:34To the alt-right, the Neo-Nazis look like antiquated losers clinging to a failed brand.
To the Neo-Nazis, the alt-right look like a bunch of posers too chickenshit to admit what they are.
To any decent human being, both are just...the worst.

Disgusted, but not surprisedBut yeah, the counter protesters are encouraging.
This is fair, yeah I agree that the best scenario would be one where they don't feel brave enough to march at-all. Still marches where they're routinely showed up by far larger numbers of counter-protesters is the next best thing in my book.
But anyway, it's over now. The Nazis bailed some time ago. The battle is ours.
At the risk of sounding trite it's great that you're out there fighting the good fight and opposing the alt-right, well done!

Yeah that's the thing about the alt-right, they're in this weird Twilight zone of being legitimately dangerous while also being ridiculous and moronic. It's dangerously easy to underestimate them and view them as non-threatening nobodies.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangMy father the multimillionaire (before losing most of it due to the financial collapse) kept some odd company—one of them being a genuine hardcore one-percenter crook.
He said that when you were dealing with a new group of crooks, it was always good to separate the two into the actual tough guys and the poseurs. Because the actual tough guys won't need to prove themselves while the poseurs will want to pick a fight (whether they'd win or not) and go further than anyone to try to prove themselves.
Even if it was stupid and could attract heat.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. The Sith have an excuse for being outnumbered, though, because of the Rule of Two.
That said, the cowardice of the alt-right makes them more dangerous, not less. They can engage in tactics like doxxing, swatting and harassment from a position of anonymity, and they're usually Tor-savvy enough to hide on the Internet (not a difficult thing to do).
They come from a generation who know how to take advantage of their faces not being punchable through the Internet.
So yeah, the counter-protest went off without a hitch and we dwarfed the alt-right in size as everybody knows. The one thing I was disappointed with was a couple of the speakers were UB-ish borderline bothsidesists ("a snake with two heads", one speaker said, while another chided the Democrats who control no branches of government at the moment for not doing anything and claiming they care about us) and presumably more were among them. So that was kind of a let-down. Rest of the event was great though.

i'm tired, my friendI can't stand people who rail on and on about how the Democratic Party is ineffectual and then complain about how they lose elections. Maybe the Democratic Party would enjoy more electoral success if idiots weren't making public speeches about how "useless" they are.

Sounds like they're chickening out to me.
