Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Not for very long, there won't be. Many actual nations do not have the strength to push back against the most powerful military force on the face of the planet were it to come to that. A bunch of pissed off civilians with shotguns aren't going to put a dent in the U.S. Armed Forces.
This doesn't stop being true if the would-be insurrectionists are blue instead of red.
Americans have a cultural love of armed insurrection as a fall-back plan, but that is a safety net made of concrete. Always has been.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.In the event of a US civil war, the likelihood of it would probably not be guns in the streets but someone blowing up buildings and the people in them. It also might be when and if the US military eventually has to arrest someone else in the government on the orders of someone else.
No, militias won't be shooting it out with US troops but they might be sniping public officials.
And US government forces might get conflicting orders.

I will point out that while you're completely right about the general point regarding the odds of beating a unified Federal government it wouldn't really be a civil war if the Federal government is unified, it would only really count if there were mass defections a la Syria.
But yes I don't think a Civil War would be the result, just our nation sliding into kleptocracy and authoritarianism.

Maybe the botcheck isn't identifying bots as I'm robots, but instead identifying bots as in the slimes

More than 850 tweets in less than two months, all of which is political and which looks agenda-driven in a single political direction?
A lot of the tweets look fresh rather than retweets. It might be a troll farm account rather than a bot.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Last I heard the maximum expectation was 400 White Supremacists, perhaps 1500 counter protesters. We’ll know for sure soon though.
Stay safe and good luck, Physical Stamina.

Tear gasses like OC and CT gas need to be washed off the skin, or else their effects continue.
Goggles and a damp rag will protect you from most of the effects, just wash yourself thoroughly afterwards. Hot water and steam will just spread the gas, so take a cold shower. When you’re leaving the area that’s been gassed check for anyone lying on the ground, as it can be lethal to people with asthma or any other breathing difficulties. Look out for the canisters as well, they’re launched from grenade launchers and the impact is enough to kill, and they can give you nasty burns if you touch them after they’ve been deployed.
Stay safe out there.
They should have sent a poet.@Physical Stamina, flip off a Nazi for me.
...Ya know, from like a safe distance.

You need 3/4ths of the states to ratify a convention's results. That is not going to happen.
Also, you're just counting Republican-held legislatures towards the 2/3? Because you should subtract one - it'll be a cold day in Hell before Alaska's current state legislature (or our governor, who has veto power over any legislative initiative) backs the national Republican Party on something like this. Any Republican legislature that might be vetoed likewise needs to be counted out.
