Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It wasn't mockery at all. They are a literal existential threat and we're bringing knives in a gun fight, when we should be bringing bombs.
I guess he thought it was an insult to him.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherWhile they are dangerous I think you're underestimating the ability of the majority to fight them, if Democrats can take power (they can) then paranoid conspiracy theorists aren't going to be able to do anything other than go back on Reddit or where-ever else they congregate and whine about the government.
While I don't agree with them you are being far too aggressive, there are far better ways to handle this kind of disagreement then insulting or swearing at them.

With a president who can launch a nuclear warhead at any time whenever he's pissed, we really can't do much it unless we go the extreme route.

This is false on a number of levels, we can vote out Republicans in 2018 and 2020 so there is quite a large amount of things we can do. Furthermore Trump while awful is not exactly that level of awful, he hasn't started any new wars (though it's hardly impossible) and I am highly skeptical of the idea that he would launch a nuclear strike.
If you say so....ignoring the Russian interference and gerrymandering stuff.

I'm not saying he should be viewed as normal or reasonable but the kind of mass damage he is realistically going to cause is through his trade wars escalating causing mass worldwide economy damage, that's a real risk that should be focused on instead of more fanciful things like nuclear strikes.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherThank you for an article from fucking China that's incorrect within the first three sentences.
The President does not have the ability to actually fire a nuclear weapon. There is no physical means for him to do so and the idea that the JCOS would let him is ridiculous. Especially given the amount of pushback the Pentagon is already giving him.
Oh really when?Anyway I think this is getting a little out of hand so let's move on....
Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation hearings are set to begin on September 4
, so barring something spectacular, it's very likely he'll be in the SCOTUS before the midterms.

Their influence is cancerous and should be suppressed but lets be careful about the rhetoric, violating the law would simply give them and their allies ammunition and thus only lawful means should be used against them.
(just felt the need to point this out, "by any means necessary" can cover quite a bit)
Fair enough, that's unfortunate but not exactly surprising. I suppose we'll see what a Supreme Court with him on it decides to do...

Yeah, you're right. Guess I didn't consider that when making that comment. My apologies.
Anyway, I don't see how sustained opposition towards Kavanaugh will be able to keep Republicans from quickly installing him as judge. Even if Democrats win the House in the midterms, it's unlikely they'll retake the Senate even in a Democratic wave (the House has no say on confirming judges), and if Ginsburg goes in the next two years, how can we stop Republicans from installing more GOP judges?

They don't "cause climate change", more or less every technologically developed country is responsible for that to one degree or another.
Frankly this is a discussion that has no productive directions it can go in and I'm going to back away from it.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangIt won't be able to stop them from installing him as a judge but it will send a useful political message to the base if no-one else, by publicly opposing him the Democratic Party is making a stand and that's often useful.
And I wouldn't discount taking the Senate, sure it's not something we should expect but with the election of Doug Jones the Senate became far more viable then it was before.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangThey don't even need Doug Jones-esque miracles- if every Democratic incumbent wins, and they take Nevada and Arizona, that'll be 51 Senate seats.
(Though, I mean, that's a tall order; there are six vulnerable democrats and them gaining anything other than Nevada or Arizona would take a Doug Jones-esque miracle.)
It wouldn’t take a miracle to take Tennessee, the Dems have a good chance there. However it would take a miracle to hold all current seats, North Dakota is looking especially had Florida isn’t looking much better.
There are predictions out there seeing a zero swing result with a six seat change, the Democrats are hugely at risk in Nortg Dakota, Florida and Indiana, while they have a chance at picking up Nevada, Arizona and Tennessee.
