Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well I don’t know what to say for my uncles/aunts/close peeps my folks know who moved to the US and became Americans from Manila during the Cold War...
All I can say is they’re vouched for/are respected since they work in universities as faculty, doctors, architects and in other professions.
Funny that he votes Republican (he and I are Filipinos, second Gen Chinese) in the last election.
My American cousins were born in Chicago and Boston.

Maddow obtained secret audio of Devin Nunes speaking at an event for Cathy Mc Morris Rogers, where he admits there is still an active (secret) effort to impeach Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein, & that House Republicans plan to revive it after the Senate confirms Trump's SCOTUS pick

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. It's interesting to think that a lot of the things we accuse Trump of older presidents have done, even back in the 19th century. He and Dubya stealing the vote was something Rutherford B Hayes was accused of, the mudslinging between Trump and Hillary is tame compared to John Q Adams vs Andrew Jackson, his political inexperience is potatoes to Zachary "I never even voted" Taylor. Maybe we just assume Trump is something new because of the Nostalgia Filter
What are some other presidents outside of living history who've been seen as clownish/corrupt/ridiculous as Trump and people kept talking about things
Eh, I don't think anyone who is an immigrant is fine...Trump actually wants to revoke citizenship, something which really hasn't been done in the US outside of getting rid of Nazis who lied to get into the country after the war. It's actually something countries aren't supposed to do at all if they can help it, because there is a push to lower the number of stateless people in the world, not to add to it.
Is a efect on media in part: Trump is a reaction to Obama who in turn is a reaction to Bush, and in general, the three mark a change in how republican and democrats behive with one another.
It dosent help that trump is really a 90 cartoon villian, he is one step to shaking is hand saying "NEXT TIME HILARY/OBAMA/LIBERALS!" that is astounding in how the hell he got there.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"I am wondering about the last election results...why is it that there are so many cases of Republicans just squeaking by while there was also an election where the Democrat was ahead and suddenly a mysterious glitch happened. I mean I know that those are mostly red districts and that nobody would have expected the democrats to even get close to winning there two years ago, but I kind of expected to also stumble over a lot of cases where the democrat just won. Did I just happen to not come across those cases? I admit I didn't look too closely because the whole election is a little bit confusing to me.
And I haven't seen anyone that shows evidence that it's a realistic threat, furthermore our system is so decentralized that I am highly skeptical that a midterm election could be realistically swayed in such a manner.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangIt's quite doable
. And you don't have to do it in many places to mess with voting anyway.
DEFCON I think has messing with voting machines as a theme this year as well.

Si Vis Pacem, Para PerkeleYou can attack the software, but to hack individual booths requires an enormous amount of manpower. It's simply not practical on a scale large enough to matter, or at least not by itself. In combination with other methods, maybe, but it would be the very last thing I'd consider.
The 2016 election proved how much mileage they got out of much easier measures, such as messing with the voter rolls. Why change someone's vote when you can stop them from voting at all?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"One working theory is that they infected the cards used to program the machines in the first place and record votes i.e. the manpower was all the poll workers infecting the machines. In other words, a particular manufacturer might have been compromised well in advance.
I do think they used the simplest solution where possible, but knowing them a few impractical ones wouldn't be surprising.

I said "I don't see evidence it's a realistic threat", there's a difference between being able to hack a single machine and being able to stop a wave or change the outcomes of the midterms.
I still don't see any evidence of that.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangRegarding Nunes' thing: It's basically a nothingburger. It amounts to "Guy who supports Trump says Trump is innocent." Nothing in his words indicate that he's trying to obstruct justice, but rather to have justice done.
And yeah. I find Nunes fascinating that he can hold an office as high as he does while being such a little toady bitch. Generally to get to such an office you might need to be a monster, but Nunes is The Renfield.

That's more reasonable, still I don't think helping the Dems would be a good idea for them.
It's not like the Democrats aren't going to oppose them anyway and thus all they would be doing would be helping an enemy, not to mention it wouldn't really harm the Democratic Party legitimacy in that unlike the Republicans the Democrats actually want to oppose Russia.

I'm going to assume you're including "removed" in impeached, but assuming Pence is not implicated in whatever brought Trump down he would become President.
A lame-duck President with a hostile Congress who thus would be a vast improvement over Trump, who would keep the seat warm until a Democratic challenger unseats him in 2020.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangWhat the Nunes thing says is that we need to be legitimately concerned that Nunes will try to impeach Rosenstein. Telegraphic actual plans for how to do it makes this officially beyond the point of blowing smoke.
Not necessarily that he'll succeed, mind you, because that will depend on the Senate. But that he has every intention to try. Call your Congressperson and let them know that you are not okay with this.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.The Tribune Media/Sinclair merger is off. As a reminder, Sinclair is the right wing media company that pushes a hard right, pro Trump agenda and has purchased a huge number of local news stations and outlets. The merger would have given them much larger access, including in large cities.
Bad news? Tribune is still selling itself, and Fox is rumored to be one of the potential buyers.

If he's already a citizen...he may still need to be careful. This administration is also looking into ways to revoke citizenship of people who already earned it.
Disgusted, but not surprised
