Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

that's a nice sentiment in theory or in a vacuum.
In practice, once you get used to using a term someone might find offensive, being told it's offensive just gets most people defensive or have them go "I use it all the time, it's not that bad" because by then it's a stock of your vocabulary.
So, how about not getting into the habit in the first place.

"You can reply to this Message!"To be honest, I think that most of what has dragged this discussion on longer than it needed to be was people being defensive about using the term.
Oh God! Natural light!![]()

All I did was post some explanatory links and quotes. If you’d read them, you’d understand why the phrase is different from the term familiar. I didn’t accuse anyone of malicious intent or deliberate rudeness. Though it is frustrating that some responses seem to be disagreeing on principle, not based on reading and disagreeing with any of the stuff I posted.

The links I posted answer that question.

If the
x5 is directed at me wisewillow, I'm not accusing anyone if anything. I sincerely don't care one way or the other. I'm primarily expressing annoyance at what I feel is an off topic diversion that has gone on far longer than it really should have

So, anyone else feel overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the news? I can’t keep up. The whole West Virginia Supreme Court is being impeached on suspicious grounds, a New York congressman is being indicted for what looks like legit financial crimes, and like five other equally big things I’ve seen just last night/this morning.

I know what you mean, it's easier for me because I currently have a great deal of free time due to classes not starting up yet but it can be rather overwhelming all the same.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji Yang... Did something major happen over the past two days that didn't come up in the WTFJHT feed? What's this about West Virginia's supreme court being impeached, or the NY congressman?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.
x4 There’s this: Voters oust prosecutor accused of favoring Ferguson officer who killed Michael Brown
and there’s this: Rashida Tlaib set to become first Muslim woman elected to US Congress.

We talked about about the WV supreme court thing a couple pages back. Let me pull my post from there. Reposting
:
Republicans say the impeachment is to curtail corrupt spending of taxpayer money on cosmetic furnishings. Democrats say it's another bit of Jim Justice's foul play.
Justice became infamous for shenanigans that started when he switched from the Republican party to Democrat in 2015. He claimed the Democratic nomination and managed to defeat the Republican nominee for governor, taking office. Then he promptly switched right back to being a Republican. Effectively, his Democratic candidacy was a trick to turn the election into Red v. Red, and the Democrats fell for it.
Now, they're suggesting that the move to impeach all four Supreme Court Justices is meant to allow the newly-minted Republican who stole the race to appoint his own team of Justices, stacking the court in one fell swoop.
Was anyone defensive about using that term? I though we had a general discussion about the correct use of it?
Anyway, does anyone else wonder if Trump is in the pocket of the oil and gas companies? A lot of what he did lately seems to be in their interest...first the whole thing with the gas pipeline, then part of the "agreement" he reached with Juncker was about the EU buying gas (if it is cheap enough, but I guess he is too stupid to understand that addendum), then he wants to remove the regulation against gas guzzlers (and frankly, considering that we just are just experiencing a heat wave - though I got a reprieve today - this might be the worst thing he did this week), and even the whole Iran theatre will just lead to American gas companies being able to sell for more if he really can force the EU into cutting Iran off (I hope not, in this the EU has to stand its ground).

For heavens sake,it's not even a 'tad insensitive'
Like I said,it's no different to someone saying they have a familiar spirit
