Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Or deported undocumented immigrants who supported Trump because he said he was just going to get rid of "the bad ones."
Except when they're all considered criminals, they're all bad. That's the joke. I've lived long enough around conservatives in So Cal to know that.

There's also the fact Trump is going after legal documented immigrants as well. He's just finding excuses to deport them.
Because he hates brown folk or even white folk he considers brown because even among racist idjits, he's a racist idjit.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.oh, I was barely paying attention when this happened today.
West Virginia's supreme court is being impeached.
All of it.
I'm certain this must be a power play but I'm not sure **who** is doing the power play.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Republicans say the impeachment is to curtail corrupt spending of taxpayer money on cosmetic furnishings. Democrats say it's another bit of Jim Justice's foul play.
Justice became infamous for shenanigans that started when he switched from the Republican party to Democrat in 2015. He claimed the Democratic nomination and managed to defeat the Republican nominee for governor, taking office. Then he promptly switched right back to being a Republican. Effectively, his Democratic candidacy was a trick to turn the election into Red v. Red, and the Democrats fell for it.
Now, they're suggesting that the move to impeach all four Supreme Court Justices is meant to allow the newly-minted Republican who stole the race to appoint his own team of Justices, stacking the court in one fell swoop.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Yea, no that's just bluntly untrue, some people do honestly think that illegal immigration should stay illegal, and that other then exceptions where life are in danger should not be allowed to stay since they already broke the law.
Yet, at the same time think legal immigration should be easier, because immigration is a net boon to the country, and that it shouldn't take 1/3rd of some ones life to integrate to there new home. And see no reason that the aforementioned people should not be allowed to enter through legal channels that have hopefully been fixed to be less of a clusterfuck.
These views are not incompatible.

Considering how often we talk about Trump's base I found an article that is extremely apropos, Trump’s political base is weaker than it seems, our new study finds
.
Turns out that his base is much less monolithic and innumerable then some people have suggested, I'm not even being sarcastic its results are kind of surprising.
There are still the crazies but they count for less then half of the Republican electorate, and 18% of likely voters.
So candidates tying themselves to Trump could very well result in depressed Republican voter turnout, which considering the high enthusiasm amongst Democrats could make such a move very risky.

Unfortunately, I spoke too soon now; Republican Troy Balderson just took the lead, he has 1.3% over Democrat Danny O'Connor now (68.7K-67K), with 66% of the votes in. We can still pull this off, but we have to get the remaining votes, especially in (under-reported) Delaware County.

The segment got off to a heated start when MSNBC co-host John Heilemann asked Wilson about how Trump can continued to boast about his high approval ratings and Wilson responded, “Cocaine’s a hell of a drug.”
“They love the fact that Donald Trump finally gives them this sort of id of the Republican Party,” Wilson said. “They’re finally given permission to say the ugly things they kind of wanted in their secret hearts for a long time, and the monster got out of its cage in terms of a lot of the populist messaging that worked to motivate Republican primary voters for a long time.”
“There’s just a huge courage deficit in this country,” Wilson went on to say, seeking to back his claim before his audio was abruptly muted on the program.
After the audio returned, co-host Mika Brzezinski asked, “Are you saying that on TV?"
“I wasn’t trying to,” Wilson said in jest. “These guys call us and they express this unbelievable, this disgust with Trump. They’re not all bought into this."
Wilson later took to Twitter shortly after the broadcast to share what he said that had been censored by MSNBC.
“I said ‘Washington is full of profiles in chickenshit. You and I both get calls from members of Congress who say I can't stand this asshole,’” Wilson clarified in a tweet.

Hey, would you mind using another phase, like “he’s my patronus?” The phrase “spirit animal” comes from the deep religious practices of some Native American tribes, and while it’s a phrase that’s relatively common, it’s also a bit insensitive.
Fun fact from my immigration law class: because the United States restricts immigration by country of origin, the typical waiting list for someone from Mexico or most of Central/South America to come here legally is about a 20 year wait. And that’s if they already have a relative here.

...that...makes sense....
Huh. I liked that phrase, too.
I don't like "my Patronus" because I'm not a devoted Harry Potter nerd and have no desire to talk like one.
But I can't keep using "my spirit animal" because it's cultural appropriation.
What phrase can replace it without requiring you to be super into a specific pop culture fandom? I'm going to have to think on this.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.O'Connor and Balderson are in a dead heat in the Ohio special election, with O'Connor up about 200 votes the last time the live feed I'm watching updated. Sadly, according to 538, the main left to count is one that's friendly to Balderson, and is likely to push him over the top. (sure enough, Balderson just jumped ahead in the vote total.)
Kobach is in a hell of a tough fight in the Republican Governor's primary in Kansas. If he manages to lose that alone will make my night.
Other notes: Berniecrats (including ones who literally call themselves that instead of Democrats) seem to be getting the short end of the stick just about everywhere tonight. Also, it looks like a propsition to overturn Missouri's right to work law is going to win overwhelmingly, which is a very, very welcome change of pace for unions. (Aside from the usual difficulties, public sector unions are getting rough treatment from the government these days, more to come on that later when the post isn't going to be lost in the primary day rush.)

Places that actually have a lot of immigrants tend to be cool with them. Especially since a lot of them are job creators.
Disgusted, but not surprised
