The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Okay here we are, this is one of the big tweet chains I ended up following yesterday.

As you can see the first reports of disarmament come in from removing the Patriot Prayers weapons, followed by making the antifa remove there signs from poles in turn, and took away two switchblades.

Then the proudboys showed up, and the group acumulated mass... so the police go back over to them, and take away there poles from the new guys, causing them to get testy. you can see them arguing with the police officer here.

The Antifa start chanting "proud boys off our streets fascists retreat" and the Proud Boys go to confront them... but the police chase them back into there dedicated pen before they get over there.

Infowars shows up, protester start chanting at them "Hey hey, ho ho, Nazi boys have got to go." this is personaly my favriote of there chants it is actualy quite catchy.

Riot cops show up on the scene to clear out the roadway, so the marches can start.

And then they do start marching.

Counter protesters start chanting “ACAB all cops are bastards”, when so far what they have been doing so far is there job....

The riot police step in to keep the anti-fa and the Nazis seperated as they go to clash agian.

Then the police ordered these guys to leave the area, which yes they are antifa, but I can see why.

They did not leave the area.

And the Soviet Squad (whoever these guys are, I legit dont know) move to the front to join them.

A guy gets clubed on the head over a flag by some one dressed in all black.

The former group of people seem to be left alone since a little bit later they manage to confiscate and burn a Nazi flag (though they could use a donation of gasoline to help assist in the burning it looks like)

One group of antifa breaks away to go chase the Patriot Prayers through downtown yelling "Nazis Out of Portland"

A uhaul with antifa backup shows up, sign on the front reads "Racists cant dance"

The group that broke away to go chase the nazis around catches up to them and confrontation breaks out.

The police use flash grenades in response.

And thats where that chain cuts off.

Which all looks to me like a standard riot control response, people were disarmed, the police attempted to keep violence from breaking out by blocking there paths for hours.... and then as soon as they started to clash the riot control equipment came out so that they did not have more people with there heads bashed in.

Also apperntly they used the nazi flag to blow there noses with before burning it, I love that.

I also love that the facists leave in literal shortbusses

Also can any one tell me what this asshole is saying? My english isn't good enough to make it out with the amount of audio clutter

I feel pretty confident about my choice for the gubernatorial candidate, even if he probably isn't going to win.

And that's why the skewed reporting (or at least Click Bait headlines) used by outlets like Huffington Post is disconcerting to me - because it gives Trump's otherwise bullshit claim about "Fake News" validity.

[up]x3 I’ll note that you’ve cited one single reporter. Not disputing his account, just pointing out that the protest also existed outside of his radius of sight/hearing.

The ACLU is filing suit because Portland police fired flash bangs and pepper bullets at counter protestors.

That is fair, but it does give a clearer picture that the police weren't just targeting the counter protestors at least on any kind of scale, and were instead doing there job as police to keep the fighting to a minimum, which the less then lethal weapons were a part of after a confrontation broke out.

Honestly, I am not going to say they can't have done better then deploying those... because they could, but from the first hand account I can see why the call was made. When your dealing with people in full body armour, and you have repeatedly disarmed both groups of weaponry.... your not going to shove your body in between them to break it up.

It wasn't just a call of "You know the antifa? fuck those guys"

[up][up] Exactly :/

[up][up]Again, you’re relying on context from a single person. That’s not getting the whole picture.

it does give a clearer picture that the police weren't just targeting the counter protestors at least on any kind of scale

No? The ACLU lawsuit literally alleges the exact opposite, and since the ACLU doesn’t like being yelled at by the court for making things up, that means there’s some credence to their claims. And again, you’re citing one guy’s vantage point. I’ve been to plenty of protests in my city; I could not tell you what was happening two blocks away. Nor would what I saw at my location necessarily justify/explain police action taken several blocks away. Police should not be using pepper bullets or flash bangs except as an absolute last resort, and that does not seem to be the case here. We should not let this level of police action be seen as normal or acceptable.

Imca (Veteran)
#251262: Aug 6th 2018 at 5:02:54 PM

The absolute last resort is to use actual weapons, something that way too many officers skip straight too, but pepper sprays and flash grenades shouldn't be treated at the same level.

They should be getting there, as something that is only deployed after other options are tried, but are allowed when the officer feels like they are in danger.

Or else we get the cases where they shoot some one and claim "I felt threatened", and then a person is dead... Threatened should be responded too with less lethal equipment, and only an actual gunfight with guns.

Of course that still leaves the problem of is the excuse bullshit or not, and in a lot of cases it will be, but it still removes any shield they have for shooting some one, which they have right now.

And in this case, once again you have two armed and armored groups clashing, I can see why officers would feel threatned after dealing with it all day, its not the same as shooting some one who is on the ground with there hands up, either in the amount of harm caused (no one is dead) nor the escaltion of force, (there is some, and its not skip straight to getting shot)

To Kill Climate Rule, EPA Proposes Redefining the Dangers of Soot:

Whether it’s in haze-shrouded cities, plumes of car exhaust or even clear skies, fine particle pollution can be found just about everywhere in the United States.

These pollutants are so small they can slip inside buildings and penetrate deep into lung tissue. On hot summer days, high concentrations of the pollutant help trigger poor air quality alerts, warning the very young, elderly and sick to stay indoors. Exposure to fine particles is linked to premature death and higher risks of asthma and heart attacks.

After decades of increasingly strong assertions that there is no known safe level of fine particle exposure for the American public, EPA under the Trump administration is now considering taking a new position. The agency is floating the idea of changing its rulemaking process and setting a threshold level of fine particles that it would consider safe.

The change would affect how EPA counts the health benefits of reducing fine particles when crafting rules aimed at reducing other pollutants, like greenhouse gases. If the plan moves forward, it could have implications for how well EPA’s regulations protect human health.

The Trump administration introduced the idea in the fall of 2017, when it publicly released a proposal for repealing the Clean Power Plan, an Obama-era rule to cut greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. While the rule wasn’t focused on fine particles, it would have reduced them anyway by requiring plant operators to install new technology to cut CO 2 emissions.

The authors of the rule had counted the health benefits from reducing particles in their justification for why the benefits of regulating greenhouse gases outweighed the costs of implementing it. The health benefits of cutting CO 2 become even more evident when paired with the “co-benefits” of cutting fine particles.

This process of weighing the economic pluses and minuses of any particular rule is known, in EPA lingo, as a cost-benefit analysis. It’s a key factor in determining whether a rule makes sense both in terms of its environmental and health benefits and in the costs it imposes on industry.

Critics see EPA’s latest proposal on particulates as a way to undermine efforts to establish strict controls on greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, by making the benefits of regulating them seem significantly lower.

“It would be hard for the Trump administration to say [the Clean Power Plan] is a net bad for the American people; the total benefits were significantly more than the cost,” said Richard Revesz, director of the Institute for Policy Integrity at New York University.

[up][up] The standard for US police is "lethal threat, lethal response". Usually that means they'll take their weapons out whenever the person they're confronting has a weapon. Less-lethal weapons are typically only used to disperse a crowd or get compliance from someone who's acting rowdy or crazy but doesn't pose a directly lethal threat.

That said, that standard isn't great.

[up] speaking of that.

California wildfires are being magnified & made so much worse by the bad environmental laws which aren’t allowing massive amounts of readily available water to be properly utilized. It is being diverted into the Pacific Ocean. Must also tree clear to stop fire from spreading!

What does that even mean?

I cant make out the first bit but tree clearing is when they slash down all the foilage in an area to stop the fire from spreading.... its a basic fire fighting tactic.

The first bit is right wing bull about how liberal California supposedly wastes fresh water by dumping it into the ocean to protect tiny fish or something along those lines. This is probably Nunes whispering into his ear since he represents a district that wants even more of the 80% of our water than they already get.

It's stupid. Water isn't something we lack when fighting fires. Heck, many of these fires are practically on top of lakes.

[up][up][up] I'd love to see what the hell he even thinks anyone would *do* with the water. He probably thinks that they'd literally just flood the whole area that's on fire.

[up] Um...yeah, of course his mental health is declining. It kind of happens to all the Presidents, but with Trump, he's visibly getting worse.

But the fact that Omarosa of all people (she's kind of one of his puppets for publicity, or at least she used to be) is saying this makes it a lot more undeniable.
