The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The question is, are the Kochs going to learn from this fiasco?

It's an honest question, since they're not stupid (they're evil), and the end result of their schemes has gotten out of control and blown up in their faces because they linked their deregulatory efforts to a movement built on nativism, collusion with a state that's out to destabilize America, and a President who is a moron.

Maybe they'll join the flow of business leaders toward the Democratic side and go back to working to keep their libertarian voice heard in the halls of sanity, even if that means it'll be overruled more often.

The Kochs aren't going to side with the Democratic Party. They'll be more likely to go back to the Libertarians.

When (and I hope it's "when" and not "if") Trumpism is no longer relevant, the Kochs, or whoever succeeds them (they aren't exactly spring chickens and I highly doubt Thiel's vampire thing actually works) will take over the GOP again.

[up] Science is out on it still, one study says it helps mice (Stanford), another says it kills them faster (Berkeley).

And then you have these idiots who jump right from results on mice to results on humans skipping every thing in between. ._.;

I also wonder if Trump attacking the Kochs will actualy do any thing, since he still has Faux News kissing his ass.

It depends on whether this leads to Trump endorsed candidates and Trump himself getting less money from the Kochs.

[up][up]They already had that network for years. The GOP could rely on a combination of rightwing propaganda and Koch money (and those like the Kochs) in the past. If you take away the latter the GOP would certainly suffer for it.

[up] which puts them in a no win situation. If they go against trump, to keep getting Kotch money, they'll enrage their base. If theykeep being yesmen to Trump, and please their base, the Kotchs will turn their empire against them.

If the GOP goes with Trump's nativist protectionism, say goodbye to Koch money since protectionism would screw them over. If the GOP goes with free trade, say goodbye to Trump voters who think free trade is the Devil.

Trump just Tweeted that Sessions should stop the Mueller probe, a first. For anyone who has been paying attention, we know that Sessions can't, even if he was ordered to or wanted to. That's up to Rosenstein.

There is, mind you, a situation where it's genuinely in Pence's favour to say stuff like that. If he believes that Trump's going down sooner rather than later, then if distances himself from the whole mess, there isn't an excuse to impeach him as well
So long as Republicans control the Senate, they won't go full hog on impeachment until and unless the issue is forced on them. Personally, I find it literally impossible that Pence didn't know about Trump's Russian ties; he is just as guilty of collusion as Trump is.

[up]As a Brazilian, all I can say after the 2016's mess is been there, done that, getting the President impeached is going to be much easier than getting the President and the Vice-President, even if Pence knew and benefited from the Russian meddling, proving it is going to be much harder.
