The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Out of curiosity, what's particularly disreputable about jacobin?

Sessions announces Department of Justice "religious liberty task force."

Referencing this paragraph:

“We’ve seen nuns ordered to buy contraceptives. We’ve seen U.S. senators ask judicial and executive branch nominees about dogma—even though the Constitution explicitly forbids a religious test for public office. We’ve all seen the ordeal faced so bravely by Jack Phillips,” he said, referring to the Colorado baker who took his case to the Supreme Court after he was found to have violated the state’s anti-discrimination laws for refusing to make a cake for a same-sex wedding.

Looks like they want to make sure Supreme Court nominations who potentially threaten Roe v Wade can make it through vetting.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

The original Jacobins were the radicals of the French Revolution; who eventually devolved into mass murderers (if not worse) much like later revolutionary movements. The Reign of Terror was primarily their doing.

The Jacobin here is a far-left publication, with all the moonbattery and Unicorn Brigade-ing that implies. Overall, they've spent more effort attacking people like Clinton (and even the mainstream center-left in Europe) as insufficiently revolutionary for their tastes, instead of focusing on the right.

Ah, so like the Young Turks, then. Right down to having a troubling name.

While Jacobin is a rather terrible publication I think it's kind of silly to ask for another source, the article in question directly links to the original Libertarian think-tank report.

I should be more clear, I just don't like giving them clicks.

In fact, here is a link to the report itself: https://www.mercatus.org/publications/federal-fiscal-policy/costs-national-single-payer-healthcare-system?utm_source=bridge&utm_medium=bridgepost&utm_campaign=medicareforall

Oh I see, that makes more sense.

In that case here is the report for anyone who doesn't want to help Jacobin.

[up]Because there are people sufficiently leftist that they want a revolution (or rather give the appearance of revolution, they're mostly sane and thus just want an election) thus they name themselves after a famous revolutionary movement.

To be fair to them there aren't many non-murdery revolutionary movements so they don't exactly have many peaceful options tongue

(I realize you may have been facetious but I'm posting it anyway!)

[up] Jesus Christ, was the unpopular tax cut of last year really not enough for the rich? Inequality keeps increasing and Trump is making sure it doesn't stop breaking a new record every year. Anyway, I think he can't just bypass congress like that on this issue.

Life is unfair...

I wonder who wrote this? It certainly wasn't him.

When the media - driven insane by their Trump Derangement Syndrome - reveals internal deliberations of our government, it truly puts the lives of many, not just journalists, at risk! Very unpatriotic! Freedom of the press also comes with a responsibility to report the news...

...accurately. 90% of media coverage of my Administration is negative, despite the tremendously positive results we are achieving, it’s no surprise that confidence in the media is at an all time low! I will not allow our great country to be sold out by anti-Trump haters in the...

..dying newspaper industry. No matter how much they try to distract and cover it up, our country is making great progress under my leadership and I will never stop fighting for the American people! As an example, the failing New York Times...

...and the Amazon Washington Post do nothing but write bad stories even on very positive achievements - and they will never change!

Part of me hopes that the ultra-rich tax cuts would cause many of Trumps lower income supporters to abandon him but the rest of me knows that most of them are too deluded or are xenophobic enough to ignore it.

Not to mention that it has been revealed that the Kochs got their playbook from a man who wanted and I quote "A world of Slaves". Having the bourgeois be able to retain all their resources while forcing the proletariat to make up that difference would be a large step towards that goal.

I feel that the default leftie response to that tax index proposal would be to say "OK, as long as you apply the same thing to the federal minimum wage, welfare and benefits".
