The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

His priorities definitely seem skewed here to say the least. This is the man who is most likely to reveal that Trump and his cohorts are worthy for a one way trip to Antebola and he complains about him not liking the golf course (even in an Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking sense). I feel like Muller is being very underestimated there.

Might make for interesting banter for a dramatization. Maybe "I always get my dues."

At the same time, this isn't really surprising given Trump's everything.

Alec Baldwin of course would play Trump.

[up] what about Robert Mueller?

He's reportedly serious, extremely dedicated, and somewhat intimidating, and is known for his gravitas, and gravely baritone.

Anyone think of any actors who might be a good possibility?

Trump is now threatening a shutdown unless Democrats give him cash for the wall.

We found Handsome Jack, but older, stupider, fatter and not as elaborately dressed.

He also took over as the captain in the third season of SeaQuest DSV as Captain Oliver Hudson. He also played The Dragon Richter in Total Recall. He also voiced Sam Fisher in one of the Splinter Cell games and played the Big Good General Jack Granger in Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars.

[up][up]I first recall seeing Michael Ironside in the 1980s miniseries V as the CIA operative Ham Tyler. He always seems to play some sort of utterly ruthless villain or anti-hero.

He's one of those actors who can play a lot of different roles. Heroes, antiheroes, villains...as long as the character is supposed to be kind of a scary hardass, he can make it work.

I saw this and it made me laugh.

March 17, 2016 ... FBI Director JAMES COMEY sits down with his predecessor ROBERT MUELLER.

MUELLER: This Trump guy screwed me out of some golf club dues once and I want revenge.

COMEY: I have the perfect plan. Step one, swing the election so he wins —

MUELLER: — I like it.

I see Trump's overused shtick here; demand Democrats to give him what he wants or he blames them when bad things happen, which is the shutdown in this case.

Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.

It'd probably be better to focus on the "white supremacist" thing anyway.

Quite. Him bringing up the Bigfoot thing actually makes sense if you think about it. Because he's a White Supremacist.

This is a useful trick to watch out for: he's attempting to mask a scandal with another, more harmless scandal. He wants to be known as the guy with a thing for Bigfoot, instead of as the latest in a series of Klandidates to campaign for the Republican party.

Liking Bigfoot is harmless. It might even endear folks to him. It is 100% a way better "scandal" to be dogged by than being a White Supremacist, while satisfying the public's need to have a scandal of some kind.

The two are not mutually exclusive. Stupidity is a very useful tool. People love stupid, especially on the right. "Stupid" plays as harmless, silly, and lovable to the Right.

I doubt that Mitch and Ryan will allow him to pull a shutdown
Because they've been so effective at stopping him from doing anything else that's self-destructive to America.
I doubt even the GOP hardliners are willing to force a shutdown that can't be resolved in their favor so close to an election.
Really? If Trump decides to shut the government down, what are they going to do about it? A whole lot of nothing, if past behavior is anything to go by.
what matters is winning general elections and not sabotaging your party's brand.
While yes, it's a definite crisis sign if open white supremacists start winning elections; having them as the primary winners and the contenders in the general election is still really bad. The white supremacists who do win usually aren't the ones open about it during the election, or running in places like that small town in Illinois IIRC where over half the town are KKK members.
northern California is on fire. Again. 3 fatalities so far plus one around Redding.
A firefighter I know from Utah is getting ready to head out that way with her whole crew ... as soon as they can put out the massive fire out there.
Is the process where they determine the candidate for a party's representative for president called a primary? Does anyone know what were the five closest for the Republicans and Democrats respectively or where I could go for that?
Usually; and it depends on what race you're looking for. Each political office generally has its own primary, and except for the Presidential elections, it's rare to have more than 2-3 people in each party for the primary.
Also when is it too late to register to vote for the midterms?
Depends on your state, so I suggest googling up your voting information now.
