Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

As pointed out above, (
’d by Garcon) for the time being guns that are whole cloth 3D printed pretty much suck. People will still have to purchase actual gun parts for their 3D printed guns, which can be more easily regulated.

They should have sent a poet. This all sounds like it might wind up being a blessing in disguise. A firearm that's easier to access, but a useless piece of total garbage to anyone who actually knows their shit sounds like it might be very appealing to reactionary idiots who don't.
Like. You're not going to see a bunch of ex-military veterans marching with the Oath Keepers carrying these. But dumbf*ck teenagers just found a BRILLIANT NEW WAY to get access to a gun. One that will fall apart or explode in their hand.
Imagine some asshole trying to start up a spree shooting holding one of these. There may be a net positive benefit from sensationalizing 3-D printed guns.

Inter arma enim silent legesthis is beautiful picture right here.
An all class Robert Mueller and Donald Trump Jr (who is wearing a horrible green pollo shirt and a cameo hat) were spotted at the DCA, and someone caught it on camera.

I'm not sure I see the funny.
If they'd posed for a picture with Mueller putting handcuffs on Don Jr., then I'd be laughing. If the tourist turned out to be an FBI plant and that was actually how they arrested Don Jr., I'd be splitting my sides.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.The thing with 3D-printed guns is that they don't have to be as good as traditionally manufactured guns in order to be a problem. So they can only fire a few times before breaking, possibly posing a danger for the user? Okay, that doesn't mean those two or three people haven't been shot. And the technology will only improve from here — 3D metal printing may not be a viable DIY thing for most people yet, but it almost certainly will eventually.
This is something that we as a society need to get out in front of, not wait until it becomes a major problem to deal with it — however it is we decide we want to deal with it.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Trump threatens a government shutdown if congress doesn't fund his wall and immigration changes.
Talk about taking your ball and going home.
Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.Yes please. Do it right in front of midterms.
I mean, I would hope there's enough sane people in this country who would look at this and say "Well, we gave him a chance and he blew it," but there's still far too many who are just like Trump in intellect and demeanor. I honestly terrified that they'll support turning our country into more of a dumpster fire.

Reminder that the Republican base is 37% of the country, if he does something like this and enrages the rest of the country then the fact that fanatics exist is not especially relevant.
Fanatics didn't save Hoover and they won't save Trump if he makes big enough mistakes.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI doubt that Mitch and Ryan will allow him to pull a shutdown; they'd likely use moderate Republican and Democratic votes to force a clean bill through. If he vetoes it....I doubt even the GOP hardliners are willing to force a shutdown that can't be resolved in their favor so close to an election.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. So, Trump had a meeting with A.G. Sulzberger (New York Times publisher).
Trump's assessment
of the meeting:
Sulzberger's assessment
of the meeting:
I told the president directly that I thought that his language was not just divisive but increasingly dangerous.
I told him that although the phrase "fake news" is untrue and harmful, I am far more concerned about his labeling journalists "the enemy of the people." I warned that this inflammatory language is contributing to a rise in threats against journalists and will lead to violence.
I repeatedly stressed that this is particularly true abroad, where the president's rhetoric is being used by some regimes to justify sweeping crackdowns on journalists. I warned that it was putting lives at risk, that it was undermining the democratic ideals of our nation, and that it was eroding one of our country's greatest exports: a commitment to free speech and a free press.
Throughout the conversation I emphasized that if President Trump, like previous presidents, was upset with coverage of his administration he was of course free to tell the world. I made clear repeatedly that I was not asking for him to soften his attacks on The Times if he felt our coverage was unfair. Instead, I implored him to reconsider his broader attacks on journalism, which I believe are dangerous and harmful to our country.
Yep, Trump exists in another universe entirely. It's really obvious when you pay attention, but he actively edits whatever is happening while it's happening. It's impossible to get through to him because he does and says whatever he thinks the person right in front of him will like (while in a private meeting) while not actually paying attention to what's going on and inserting his own narrative.
Essentially, Trump is Cartman from the Episode Fishsticks. I wouldn't be surprised if Trump thought he was fighting Human-Killing Mexican Robots with the Powers of the Human Torch, while talking to the guy from NYT about how the Media was the 'Enemy of the People'.

I've known a couple of people in real life who never have a conversation with you. They're having a conversation with a 'you' that's inside their own head. They're responding to the conversation that's occurring in their head and not the conversation that's actually happening. Their later recall of the conversation is as per the conversation that occurred inside their own head.
It can be very frustrating to have someone swear blind you're lying about having said (or not said) something when you (and sometimes there are one or more witnesses!) did. It ends up feeling like gaslighting. The difference is that the person isn't deliberately attempting to gaslight you, they're actually accidentally gaslighting themselves.
It's the most bizarre thing to experience.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.I Reject Your Reality is very much in play with Trump. Him and his supporters.
Disgusted, but not surprised

What's going to prevent 3d printed guns from being used in crimes is that 3d printed guns fucking suck and will take your hand off before they let you shoot someone.
Oh really when?
