The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm in Maricopa, AZ. Super light red, 702,907 votes for Hillary vs 747,361 votes for Trump. I'd be shocked if this district didn't flip.

Ironically that would immorality appealing...as a punishment. The denial of release from a world your actions had wrought ruin upon. An Ironic Hell (especially considering avoiding death is itself considered selfish). Of course the question becomes as to whether it has the potential of being an Unishment instead?

Pretty damn red here, which is no surprise. What's more surprising is that there are a few precincts nearby that went for Clinton, including one that was pretty dark blue, not to mention several other small blue patches that are hardly huge population centers, and seem to vary in size somewhat. I suppose that some of them would have to be blue, but I'm still curious how they came to be.

Oh God! Natural light!

[up]x I don't know

This is, sadly, older than one might think. I was watching Extra History today, namely their video about Pellagra from 1907-1912. The doctor looking into the ailment - which reached epidemic-levels and caused diarrhea, rashes, and could even cause insanity - found out that it was caused by poor diet.

His attempts to get the diets of the sharecroppers improved met very stiff resistance from the State governments in the South, as they wanted to believe that it was a communicable disease rather than poor diets, as that would mean people were getting sick as a direct result of shitty economic conditions. It only got resolved when Goldberger, the lead researcher, found that brewer's yeast added to meals would clear it up - it was later found in 1937 that Niacin (Vitamin B3) deficiency was what caused the ailment. Prior to this though, the State governments literally rejected financial aid and questioned Goldberger's findings, rather than admit the problem existed.

I'm surprised the suburbs where I lived went Clinton by about 55-65%.

I mean, yes they were majority hispanic, but they were also primarily Cuban, which I thought would have at least tilted the areas more towards Trump.

The more well to do suburban areas and the majority white rural areas went Trump though, to not much surprise.

This "controversy" basically amounts to: "Director who used to be known for his dark humor made some super dark jokes in the past, despite having long since stopped making jokes that dark and had long since apologized for his dark humor. People unfamiliar with said director's past who only know him as the raccoon and tree guy are outraged".

Thank you, ~Pushover Media Critic

Regarding the electoral map, I lived in Nampa, ID 83686 during the election: It went Trump 59% / 27%

It's a mostly red state but there's a pocket of blue, unsurprisingly given the earlier comment about state capitals, at Boise.

Regarding the election map, my hometown of Juneau is mostly blue. My district went 62% for Hillary while the one immediately south of mine had 65% and the downtown area of my hometown was 76%. The only red districts in town (and even then, they're light red) are in the Valley, which seems to break with the rest of the town on most things.

With Obama-Trump voters you have to remember that a lot of voters are very low information, if all you know is bare bones the jump isn’t that hard to make. They voted for Obama because after 8 years of Bush things sucked, Obama promised change so they voted for him, after 8 years of Obama things still sucked and Trump promised to shake things up, so they voted for Trump.

What they fail to understand is that the reason things aren’t improving for them is because of Congress and their state government, they’re not informed enough to understand anything beyong the broadest of optics.

[up]x2 It's only a rumor at this point but honestly I wouldn't be at all surprised if it happens. Remember, Bolton wants to invade Iran and overthrow its government. And Trump's so insecure he would let Bolton do it to get back at Iran's mean tweets. But y'know, Clinton was a warmonger.

EDIT: Re: That map on the previous page: It's fucking depressing how red most of that map is.

To address a post from the last page: No, I don't let the alt-right win. The alt-right had already won when they found those damned tweets. If Disney fires Gunn, great, they got a hit on him. If Disney doesn't fire Gunn, they can built a huge "whatsoaboutism" media storm around it
So since they're going to spin it in their favor no matter what, maybe we should not give a shit what they think and do the right thing instead. The guy made crude comments made years ago, which he apologized for and stopped doing years ago, and hasn't done since — is firing him for that the right thing?

Since dark humor is apparently a permanent black mark against one's character regardless of personal growth or the opinion of coworkers clearly in their mind this was the right thing to do.

Because punitive justice has such a great and effective history -_-

James Gunn only issued that apology a month after he was hired to produce Guardians of the Galaxy. And he only did it in response to GLAAD raking him over the coals about it. And it had nothing to do with pedophilia.

Gunn's apology was for anti-gay and sexist comments on a blog he wrote called "The 50 Superheroes You Most Want To Have Sex With". He has never addressed the pedophilic comments he made. He has apologized for pissing on the LGBT community, specifically, and nothing else.

So no, I don't buy the argument that James Gunn recanted long ago. He was a controversial figure before, but the pedophilia is a new controversy. It is not in any way a resurrection of the old one. We knew James Gunn had said dumb shit in the past and that, when prompted by controversy, was willing to apologize only for the specific parts people were prompting him about. But the severity of the things he had said was heretofore unknown.

It's like a person serving out a prison sentence for robbery, and then people discovering years later that a murder took place during said robbery. Yes, we've been over this before, but you're still coming back into the courtroom because now it's so much worse than we'd previously imagined.

If anything, the fact that he's apologized before only makes it worse. Like. If you issue a formal apology and say, "I'm sorry that I offended gay people with my song, 'Kill all Q***rs and N****rs'", you're not going to get brownie points for it when people realize who you didn't apologize to.

[up]I think other people have said his already, but you are taking the comments of a man who is known for working at a film company where Black Comedy was its finest way to seriously.

No offense, His pedophillic comments are bad, but as someone who thrives on Black Comedy myself, I knew for a fact that he wasn't being serious, even if it is overly edgy in hindsight.

Does anyone actually think that he's a pedophile? Because there's a huge difference between making jokes in bad taste and supporting attitudes that are harmful. Making sexist, racist, or homophobic jokes are bad because people actually defend sexism, racism, and homophobia, so that sort of humor makes you look like one of those people, which is bad even if you're not. Meanwhile, there's no major part of American society that are pedophiles and want to shut up people who are telling them to stop being pedophiles.

You can certainly still think that making jokes about pedophilia is bad and doing it makes Gunn an asshole, but it's a different class of problem than making jokes that are sexist, racist, or homophobic.

People absolutely defend pedophilia and talk about how people should let them have child porn. Sometimes they do that on this very forum. We've had people right here in OTC banned in the past for trying to raise discussions about how 40-year-olds should be allowed to f*ck 12-year-olds.

In this day and age where literal goddamn Nazis are on the rise in America, I'm surprised that we're still trying to use the argument, "Nobody SERIOUSLY supports this hateful agenda! It's all just poor-taste jokes!"

And those people are beyond niche, obviously fringe weirdos exist but it's ridiculous to act as if NAMBLA is equivalent in influence to Focus on The Family.

Furthermore White Supremacy has a long and varied history within America while support for child abuse does not. So once again, ridiculous comparison.

Once upon a time, Neo-Nazis were considered beyond niche.

Is Peter Gunn a pedophile? That can't really be proven one way or the other at this point in time. But he has, in the past, indicated that he wants to be considered one. Disney is within their rights to acquiesce to that.
