The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Good riddance.

My only disappointment is that I'm not in his district and thus wouldn't be able to vote against him.

So, something that Rachel Maddow pointed out on her show last night, and which I verified by looking at the White House transcript itself (haven't been able to find the video version)... the Trump administration literally cut out half of the Reuters reporter's question to Vladimir Putin.

  • Original exchange:
Reporter: Did you want President Trump to win the election, and did you direct any of your officials to help him do that?
Putin: Yes, I did. Yes, I did. Because he talked about bringing the U.S.-Russia relationship back to normal.

  • Edited version:
Reporter: And did you direct any of your officials to help him do that?
Putin: Yes, I did. Yes, I did. Because he talked about bringing the U.S.-Russia relationship back to normal.

Fucking christ, they aren't even trying to hide the Nineteen Eighty-Four level tactics on this one.

Well, yeah, that's Russia, the direct inspiration for Orwell's story. The fact that it's happening in the US, though...

The biggest obstacle to Buchannan's ultimate goal is the changing of the constitution. Not even the Koch brothers have the power to achieve that yet, and unless their heirs are as dedicated as they are, it may fail.

In the stranger than fiction news today...

Putin’s Soccer Ball for Trump Had Transmitter Chip, Logo Indicates

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s gift of a soccer ball to U.S. President Donald Trump last week set off a chorus of warnings — some of them only half in jest — that the World Cup souvenir could be bugged. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham even tweeted, “I’d check the soccer ball for listening devices and never allow it in the White House.”

It turns out they weren’t entirely wrong. Markings on the ball indicate that it contained a chip with a tiny antenna that transmits to nearby phones.

But rather than a spy device, the chip is an advertised feature of the Adidas AG ball. Photographs from the news conference in Helsinki, where Putin handed the ball to Trump, show it bore a logo for a near-field communication tag. During manufacturing, the NFC chip is placed inside the ball under that logo, which resembles the icon for a Wi Fi signal, according to the Adidas website.

If the Jason Spencer Sketch was enough for him to resign, imagine the insanity that is the Sarah Palin sketch from Who is America.

When that one article said that SBC is out to ruin careers, they weren't kidding.

Yeah that edit doesn’t hide anything, if anything it makes things look more incriminating due to removing the part about wanting Trump to win and leaving in the part about directing people to help Trump win.

On the football, I imagine that the transmitter might have had its programming altered on the off chance that it was allowed in a secure area.

@Silas: I’m not sure how much this will actually matter in the long term; Republican voters’ sentiments towards Russia have stressing crept up despite no real relaxation of tensions since Trump’s election, with 40% now viewing Russia as friendly and a majority no longer viewing the country as an adversary. Hence the weird behavior of Republican officials on the issue of Russia.

We may have already passed the tipping point in terms of partisanship where the GOP l base views accepting the help of the Russian government and outright undermining democracy as being preferable to allowing the democrats back into power.

[up]SOP for them really, they don't care if there's an absolute mountain of evidence that their policies/Trump's impulsive decisions aren't going to accomplish their objective (beyond human suffering) and will in fact make things worse. Emotions over reason.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.

Republican voters’ sentiments towards Russia have stressing crept up

Has it actully crept up, or have Republicans who oppose Russian been leaving the party?

Russian meddling can tilt the scales slightly in the Republican’s favour, but much like gerrymandering it’s a slight advantage that can be overcome with sufficient numbers.

[up][up] Really, it's more that the stronger the boogeyman of MS-13, the more they can institute policies that feel like they'll combat them.

Like deporting illegals. That feels like it'll combat MS-13. After all, MS-13 are illegals, right?

It's a classic aspect of fascism, they need their foe to paradoxically be all-powerful but at the same time pathetic and weak.

I'll also point out that if it does lead to an upswing of gang violence they can point to it as evidence that immigrants are exactly the parasites nativist Republicans claim they are.

Just like how they sabotage government programs and use the resulting failure as evidence that the government can't do anything.

Jason Spencer resigns after the expose' of him on Sacha Baron Cohen's Who is America.

And just like that, this show's existence justifies itself. I was kinda on the fence about it because I wasn't sure how much it would actually accomplish, but this is a positive tangible consequence. Even if nothing else ever comes of it, this victory right here makes it worthwhile by itself.

Now I'm excited to see if anything else will come of it!

RE: Omission in transcript

The problem, as CNN points out, is that it's been a week and the transcript hasn't been edited to match what was said despite pretty much every international news agency reporting on the full quote. And when you couple that with Trump infamously saying "Don't believe what you're reading or seeing" just yesterday, the denial of malicious intent strikes me as Implausible Deniability at best.
