Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If they were just doing that then you might have a point, but they weren't. They were clearly blaming the party as a whole for the bad candidate, which is not reasonable. The local base are responsible not the party.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangRandy Bryce doesn’t seem a bad sort? Is there something I’m missing?
Another sore point with me in this thread is that I was accused of slandering Kamela Harris when I said that she displayed moral cowardice for refusing to authorize more advanced testing in the Cooper case even though there was ample proof previous tests were rigged and Cooper was likely framed. Everyone said “oh it was Jerry Brown’s fault why don’t you go after him.” Brown absolutely deserves flak but Harris was attorney general. She could have easily agreed that authorize testing regardless of what Brown wanted and she sat on it. When she did reverse her stance it was a.) after she no longer had the power and b.) after Nick Kristof called her out on it.
But apparently I’m a sexist Bernie bro for pointing that out.
I will absolutely defend her on immigration reform and gay rights. She’s also done admirably fighting trump. However she also tries to defend the Orange County da when they were booted off the death penalty case due to the illegal snitch scandal, defended the death penalty in court even when she had refused to defend prop 8 in court, tried to defend a dubious conviction featuring a false confession and, despite having the authority to authorize testing on her own regardless of what governor brown wanted, refused to authorized more advanced testing in Kevin Cooper’s case despite compelling proof that the San Bernardino Sherrif’s Department framed him
In short, she’s got a lot to admire. But she’s consistently has a shitty record regarding criminal justice and it feels like people on this thread are saying you should ignore that
Note: This has been on my chest for a while and I needed to vent.

Iran responds to Trump's threats, and warns of "countermeasures."
Of course Kremlin is going to help the Democrats.
After all, after everyone is seeing the mess the Kremlin created by putting Donald Trump in the presidency and furthering the Republican agenda, the backlash of that help is making the Democrats the only sane option when it comes to voting.
So, in short the Kremlin is helping the Democrats by showing how mindfuckingly stupid it is to give the Republicans full reign on the country.
Inter arma enim silent legesRE the possibility of Julian Assange being finally extradited by Ecuadar: What are the odds that Russia may actually assassinate him in the middle of the extradition to silence him? They've done that to at least two of their own ex-spies when they defected, even though they were under the UK's protection; in the most recent attempt, it even seemed they weren't bothering to hide the fact that they're the ones who killed him (as in, the toxin used is only produced by a specific Russian lab and could've only been entrusted to a Russian agent with the requisite training to properly handle it).
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.
That’s a very real possibility now that I think about it, thing is based on past methods it’s likly to not just be Assange, others may be caught up in the attack.
Though I should note that it’s not an extradition, he’d simply be told to leave the embassy where he is hiding, so a Russian assassin would have to either get him while inside the embassy or during his walk from the embassy front door to the waiting police car. Or they’d have to assassinate him while he’s in police custody.
This thread isn’t a hive mind, thouse accusations came mainly from someone who isn’t in OTC anymore, but in the end what you said was regarded as suspect because of your timing and phrasing. This thread has issues with people who support Sanders and then criticise other democrats, this is due to the frequency of such criticism being bad faith hypocritical mud slinging, since Sanders has normally done worse than the accusations levied yet still has the person’s support.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI am wondering that myself. I don’t always agree with the guy (he can be rather self righteous and arrogant) but he’s a smart guy who makes good points
One point I disagreed with him was on the young Turks. Cenk often is a self righteous asshole but he DID actually acknowledge that the Armenian genocide happened and was a thing. Also there are legitimate definitions for the phrase Young Turk besides the genocidal movement of the ottomans (Gerald Ford called himself a “Young Turk” for instance, there are people at a talent agency who refer to their agents as “young Turks” so by Ambar’s logic THOSE people are genocide deniers too).
It’s like “the guys a dick but at this point saying he’s a genocide denier when he publically compared on ongoing genocide in Myanmar to the Armenian genocide is outright dishonest.”

He got OTC banned and then full banned (not sure if it was the appealable variety or the non-appealable variety). For obvious reasons the mods don’t hand of details of bans to anyone who asks and tend to prefer that we not gossip about bans.

Facebook is much laxer than us. That kind of commentary would merit a thump at a minimum if done here on TV Tropes.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman@ Lord Yam
Regarding Randy Bryce, he's had some graver weaknesses than first thought. Issues with unpaid child support, possible legal troubles, and Cathy Myers has deeper ties to the district, and has won union elections. It may be an instance of one candidate having national attention and one having more inner-district support.

Reading tropes such as You Know What You Did
Well Alex Jones, and Trump of course with the way he's acting, really do need to watch their neck because regardless of how much of a martyr they would become someone would think it would be worth ripping it off their shoul...and now TV Tropes is implicated in a terrorist plot against the President, his media adviser and, "Emissary to the gay frog Reptilians."
Currently reading up My Rule Fu Is Stronger than YoursI for one would probably cautiously welcome our new Reptilian overlords if their rule comes with removing every single dictatorship, illiberal democracy, etc. on the planet, punishing every single one of the scum that have been running those vile regimes, and replacing them with well-oiled functioning liberal democracies run by morally decent, sufficiently competent people.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. The House race continues to shift in the Democrats favor, with far more Republican held seats in jeopardy (enough to shift control if they go that way), Democrats coming ahead in fund raising in key districts, and historical precedent (parties ahead at this point in the election cycle in previous years have usually done well) all pointing to a wave. One analyst says that the Democrats' chances have never been higher since 2016.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.

The shityness of a Republican candidate does not mean one can’t want a better quality of democrat candidate, if one is still willing to back a poor quality democrat I see no reason why they should be dogpiled for complaining about how they’d prefer said candidate to be of actual quality.
