Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I hope regularly referring to Sacha Baron Cohen and Michael Cohen back to back in the same thread doesn't get confusing.

Oh God! Natural light!
It's funny seeing how quiet the thread was in the Obama years where mostly nothing happened and the things posted here concerned crazy GOP shenanigans in red states, compared to the present where there's a new stupid headline to report everyday.
Assuming Devos hasn't completely gutted USA education by the time this term is done, future history books will have a lot to say on these years.
I've said before that out of all of the members of Trump's Cabinet of Horrors, I might hate Devos the most.

Disgusted, but not surprised
With this administration's turnover rates, you might get as lucky as me when I saw my most hated official, Pruitt, resign his office in disgrace.
I'm still apprehensive about it since anyone Trump picked would likely be as bad if not worse. I'm not sure who would be worse than Devos, but I'm fairly certain Trump's pick would be the answer to that question.
Let's face it, as bad as Pruitt was (and he was bad) Andrew Wheeler isn't any better.

Regarding that, I'm certain reddit and 4chan will eventually make the history books...if only to contextualize how Trump became president and other events.
Come to think of it. I can imagine a "History of the Internet" course being possible, a college level class dedicated to what happened on the internet and how it affected the real world.

GOP Criticism Of Trump Is All Talk — But It Still Matters
An interesting article about how Congressional Republicans could be doing more to oppose Trump, even just verbally going against him sometimes can still have an effect. If nothing else it helps Trump from becoming normalized if even some Republicans are willing to pay lip service to a lot of what he says being over the line and/or false.
And another point that it's less "most Republicans vote in line with Trump" and more "Most Republicans vote Republican." Which is a condemnation of them and the party as a whole in a different way, but is still important.
One person made the point that Sanders has pointed to actual problems (we have tried negotiating with Republicans only to get spat on because current republicans are a bunch of whiny children) but doesn’t propose good solutions.
Compromise is needed to a degree but I can’t help but think that Obama could have done more if he and the Dems said “fuck you we aren’t going to let you push us around.”

Investigators have at least 12 Cohen recordings.

No specifics yet, but if they consider it valid to the case, the content must be good.
