Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's even more awful then you think, but it's very much worth watching.

I am so confused as to how people fall for things like this show. How in the world do people just blindly accept Person X is Person X and then accept any wild and wacky premise they give, like 'Shouting at Terrorists Scare them'. That just feels incredibly nonsensical to me, but it's there for anyone to watch; a man is tricked by another man into exposing his bigoted inner feelings. I guess that one experiment (where people pretended to be Prisoners and Prison Guards, then went completely overboard with both personas) is on full display here...
But yeah, screw that guy, he should resign, or impeached.
These polls, how accurate are they? The population of the USA is in the hundreds of millions, last time I checked; even if we assume that the eligible-to-vote portion is only a "fraction" of that, we'd be counting millions of people at the very least.
Yup, both of my parents converted as young adults and raised me as a Muslim.
I eventually moved away from my faith but I still look back at it fondly.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI don't get the attempt to put Trump as any kind of Christian figure. He hates Muslims but so does Bill Maher and Sam Harris.

The fact that his VP is a Christian fundamentalist? Or that the Religious Right view him as a the messiah?
Obviously Trump is just a immoral apatheist but his fans and the factions aligned with him don't seem to believe that (hint: because they're white supremacist theocrats).

Since both Hillary Clinton and Barrack Obama are devout Christians I don't think that's really true.
Replace "Christianity" with White Evangelical Christianity and you'll be right.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangNo one likes Pence among the Religious Right, which kind of summarizes it there. As for the Right, a lot of them despise him in the churches.
I'm not sure it's a Christian theocrat Venn diagram instead of just racism. Trump's rhetoric is racial and nationalist but religion barely figures out in it.
I said it before "They voted for the adulterous New York atheist over the Southern Methodist woman."

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Which I mean, if you accept that there is a God, and that we're all sinners, I suppose "God uses sinners to do good" would be true. But I'd imagine people would expected to make a distinction from the fact that no one is free of sin, and someone like Trump who actively indulges and shows no sign or desire to want to repent/improve/whatever.
I know why they don't care about it, because it's all just a rationalization for their prejudices, but still.
x13 Assuming proper sampling with replacement, you only need to poll roughly a square root of the population to get a good estimate of how popular something is. That's only an estimate (this is why good polls come with a margin for error) and it assumes that sampling isn't systemically biased (for example, if you only poll people with cell phones, your poll will be biased because you under-polled the elderly).
The above is a good summary of polling 101.

The evangelical break over Trump isn't complete but it's big news in Christian...well, news.
Pence has been trying to patch things up but there a huge protest over his speech at the conference.
It should have been much much earlier.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.I don't believe anyone has said that there are no Evangelicals that dislike Trump/Pence.
My Grandparents are Evangelicals and they've despised Trump from day 01, incidentally they quite like Pence and are sad that he would tie himself to a godless man like Trump.
Obviously this is anecdotal but my point is that I don't believe anyone has said they're 100% with him, just a majority of them.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangFrom what I've heard White Evangelical and Southern Baptist support for Trump stands at 70 and 80%, respectively. A strong majority in both ways, but also a sizeable minority. Not that that minority necessarily has reasons we'd agree with for not supporting him. Could easily be a Right for the Wrong Reasons thing.

Sacha Baron Cohen's new show is the best Satire he's done since the old Ali-G days.
I love it, and how it makes fools out of so many people.
Watch Symphogear

On continued support for Trump, I actually read an article yesterday about a small Alabama town full of Trump supporters.
The interesting thing that a lot of them were willing to admit that, yeah, he's a terrible person, but he's a terrible person who'll work towards the things they care about.
Which basically boil down to racism and Christian domination, with the bible conveniently justifying all of their prejudices, but that's par for the course now.
