The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yogurt has microorganisms that eats brain tissue and turn us into conforming lemmings. Jones is getting too close to the truth and that's why they're suing him.

Wake up, sheeple!

I've heard quite a bit about Kamala Harris a few months back, but I admit I don't know what she has done to make people believe that she is a possible future candidate.

I know that she was a state attorney and attorney general for California, and is now a Senator for California, but that is kind of it.

Free speech advocates rush to oppose Idaho’s ag-gag law in 9th Circuit appeal

http://www.idahostatesman.com/news/business/article145847014.html

Journalists, book publishers, food-safety groups and labor unions have gone to court to fight the Idaho law that makes it illegal to secretly film animal abuse at farms and other agricultural facilities.

Twelve groups filed friend-of-the-court briefs with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals contending that the so-called ag-gag law, which was struck down by an Idaho judge, violates the right to free speech. A hearing is scheduled next month on the state’s appeal.

“The Idaho Legislature enacted the law with one goal in mind: to silence a growing movement of citizen-journalists and activists that conduct undercover investigations of agricultural production facilities in order to expose mistreatment and otherwise horrific conditions of animals and workers alike,” wrote two journalism professors at New York University.

In contrast, no groups filed friend-of-the-court briefs on the side of Idaho.

All 100 US Senators are called to the White House to receive a Briefing on North Korea. It is unusual that all 100 Senators would be called at the same time for a briefing.

It looks like Trump really wants a war with North Korea.

CNN asks What About The Children?!? as Democrats cuss while giving speeches

Causally saying shit = UNFORGIVABLE

Casually admitting to sexual assault = You win the Presidency

And of course, the Dems are "elitists, snobby, and out of touch" with the average American. But they're not allowed to curse casually like the average American.

I'll keep it saying it. Corporate media but specifically cable news is awful.

Six corporate conglomerates (Disney, CBS Corporation, 21st Century Fox, Viacom, Time Warner, and Comcast) own the majority of mass media outlets in the United States. Such a uniformity of ownership means that stories which are critical of these corporations may often be underplayed in the media. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 enabled this handful of corporations to expand their power, and according to Howard Zinn, such mergers "enabled tighter control of information." Chris Hedges argues that corporate media control "of nearly everything we read, watch or hear" is an aspect of what political philosopher Sheldon Wolin calls inverted totalitarianism.

In the United States most media are operated for profit, and are usually funded by advertising. Stories critical of advertisers or their interests may be underplayed, while stories favorable to advertisers may be given more coverage.

Academics such as Mc Kay, Kathleen Hall Jamieson, and Hudson have described private U.S. media outlets as profit-driven. For the private media, profits are dependent on viewing figures, regardless of whether the viewers found the programs adequate or outstanding. The strong profit-making incentive of the American media leads them to seek a simplified format and uncontroversial position which will be adequate for the largest possible audience. The market mechanism only rewards media outlets based on the number of viewers who watch those outlets, not by how informed the viewers are, how good the analysis is, or how impressed the viewers are by that analysis.

Re candidates, don't know about Kamala Harris, but from The Other Wiki, she sounds interesting. The experiences she had in California pertaining to immigration, including illegal immigration would be a good basis for Democrats taking a strong pro-immigration stance without the Free Trade association it had in Clinton's campaign.

Please not Cuomo. AFAIK he's not actually good/progressive on any issue. Basically, leftists hate him as much if not more than Clinton and Booker, and for better reason- So not only would he be a bad choice for uniting the Party, he'd just be a bad choice period.

I think Sherrod Brown would be a great choice. While I think some of his foreign policy stances are questionable, he basically has the right stances on every issue for both leftists and liberals and comes across as a very humble/down to earth/likable guy.

I'd also say that Kristen Gillebrand wouldn't be a bad choice in terms of the combination of liberalism and populism, although she basically had a 180 on some of her views, which makes me question a bit how that would play on the campaign trail.

[up] I really don't want Cuomo either (I wouldn't mind DeBlasio however), but it's entirely possible he'll take a swing at it anyway, especially if there aren't any other centrist democrats in the race.

The question, if he does, is will he be a legit contender or a Sanders Style Spoiler

CaptainCapsase from Orbiting Sagittarius A* Since: Jan, 2015
#184539: Apr 24th 2017 at 12:36:51 PM

[up] Sanders wasn't a spoiler, and the concept doesn't really mean much in primaries to begin with. If Cuomo goes for it and there isn't another centrist candidate in the race, I can't imagine him not being a contender, despite being a rather poor choice.

[up][up] It's about as authoritative as any other place that discusses politics, really. A lot of talk about what should be done and how big a group of assholes the opposition is with little enough power to actively do anything outside of their individual local areas.

I live in California so I'm not worried about Trump winning this state.

You also only get a biased perspective if you only go to places full of the "I'm With Her" crowd.

Maybe, but see the aforementioned dislike of politics. I'm not going to go hunting for places to talk about it any more than I can help. Especially not with any expectation of the relative civility seen here.

I do occasionally look up right leaning news sites to see how they report on some stories.
