Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump is Stupid Evil with a Crippling Overspecialization in conning people that unfortunately helped him win the election.
As for why FOX and others on the right wing seem to be suffering after winning...again, I'm reminded of that Lincoln quote I keep repeating in this thread.
"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power."
Disgusted, but not surprised
No. 3, which is essentially a Pyrrhic Victory, I think fits the best.
Nah, Trump is True Stupid.

I would also say that Trump has completely ruined the Relationship of the Republicans with the majority of Millennials (Though this relationship was dying by 2013), is breaking the Relationship of the Party with the majority of Gen X'ers and Democrats (These relationships were straining already), and is also starting to tear up the Relationship of the Party with the Tea Party, the group that gave them power in 2009+!
Since we're on the subject of Trumps talent of Conning people, this is an interesting take on how he does it.

I have been thinking recently that a lot of it is learned behaviour. A lot of what Trump does is like a caricature of a self-centered businessman from the 50s. I'm thinking that maybe Trump's father was actually really bad at teaching his methods, since Trump makes some really stupid mistakes on a regular basis. Things like apparently never doing any market research (Trump steaks. There's no way that Trump steaks makes any sense to anyone over 4) or the way that Trump is apparently really bad at corporate-level negotiation.
"He could sell ice to an Eskimo." Well not if he calls them that. It's an insult.

Young people are often reactionary and driven to the extreme end of one side or another. Most of us have grown up in a generally more diverse and accepting world, and know people who would be affected by these policies. This is the only world we remember, and we think it's better in a lot of ways then what came before it, but also recogize that there is still a lot room for improvement.

But then you remember the immense backlash from these Alt-Right Youtubers and Propagandists (including some of them getting hit multiple times), and things look better. You also have to remember that the Alt-Right is a new, small movement, and with Trump's 'betrayal' for their cause, the movement may die in it's infancy.

Like the article describes, I'm honestly afraid that it will never happen. That Trump is going to serve 8 years as President and be remembered by half the country as a respected President who would've been even better if not for the "deep government" or whatever holding him back. Because he's not the only one living divorced from reality.

That's been pretty obviously all along. It's pretty difficult to mentally frame yourself as "the bad guy" so most of these people honestly think that everyone else is just as crooked as them, if not moreso.
It's the same with the people against being "politically correct". They honestly think that the silent majority shares their disgusting viewpoints and is simply being bullied to keep quiet about it. Because they cannot conceive of a world in which other people actually want to be nice to each other.

Trump doesn't believe that anything he's ever done has failed to work. And, quite frankly, he's right. Because he's always managed to come out of every failure even more famous and successful than before. While leaving behind a trail of ruined investors and customers who trusted him. Is it really "failure" when you're consistently profiting off of the misery of others? That's what I'm afraid of here: that Trump isn't "failing" and will not "fail" at the Presidency. He'll just leave the country in a smoking wreck while making off 8 years later with a tidy profit and a clean reputation among enough people to matter.

I think we can all agree on the Stupid part, at least.
