Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

More people went to the Science March in DC than Trump's inauguration.
McCain: Trump budget cant pass Senate
As it happens, the bill cant pass the Senate without support from Democrats.

I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.Which ain't happening because budgets (—>guidelines for the finance committees and policy manifestos) are never bipartisan, unlike appropriations (—>the actual spending laws).
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanVox: The GOP's efforts to kill Obamacare have made Obamacare more popular than they are
, by a wide margin.
Oh, irony.

Some people, sure. Others drank way too much of the Republicans' Kool-Aid and either don't know or don't care that they voted for their own suicides.
Still, I'm happy to see that I was wrong about the GOP's chances of repealing the ACA. I can only hope that Trump and the GOP's utter incompetence will prove me to be even more wrong in the future.
Pence hit the rather low bar of appearing to be more sane than Trump. In reality, he's wearing the Mask of Sanity, and they're both absolutely gibbering mad.
Also, he's a religious fundamentalist, which scored him some points with other religious fundamentalists.

"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's DictionaryRepublican voters are constantly chasing the unicorn of a "sensible politician who espouses their core values". Every time someone comes along who wears the costume, they have crazed orgasmic enthusiasm until the shine wears off.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"When I read that comment by Michael Reagan, this comic popped into my head
◊, so hopefully that gives a laugh for those that need it.
Wasn't Pence the guy who when his gay discrimination bill failed in Indiana had a press release about the failure and stood there like a deer in headlights for at least a minute because he couldn't understand why his bill wasn't popular?
Because that's the thing about Pence. He appears to be in the category of people who think that everyone thinks just like him, but society is holding them back. When he's confronted with evidence that he's wrong about that, he freezes up and has no idea what to do.

Pretty desperate, and probably a little crazy, too. But you'd have to be, if you had a flabby, orange "God-Emperor" who was publicly strutting about in the nude while insisting he's wearing the best clothes and that anyone who says otherwise is FAKE NEWS.
Feel free to imagine that horrible sight, by the way. You're not allowed any Brain Bleach.

"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's DictionaryPence's positives:
-He's not going to send out 3 AM tweets badmouthing other countries, or change his foreign policy on a whim.
-He's able to pay moderate attention to meetings and intelligence briefings.
-He's a reactionary governor from a deep red state, and he was still so unpopular that his former lieutenant governor had to reverse some of Pence's policies.
While all of Trump's policies are a mess, he's still very much aligned with the current Republican establishment in screwing over abortion rights, LGBTQ folk, non-white people, the environment, and so on. It's just that Trump's a willfully stupid man who has no comprehension of how little he knows and is unwilling to take anything but himself seriously. Pence could at least manage not to completely alienate all of our allies and trading partners. Not to mention that Trump has excited all the white supremacists and various scum- the nazis aren't marching for Pence.
@Beary Scary; It's not immediately obvious which case you're referring to in this post. I'm assuming the whole Bill O'Reilly thing because that's what's been discussed recently, but it's still unclear since the last two pages weren't talking about any sexual harassment lawsuits at all.

Sessions says his Hawai'i comments were a joke. No they weren't.

@Luigisan 98: Yeah. When it comes to the subject of politics, I've learned that if I just assume the worst, I tend to be right more often than not. Granted, my depression and other neuroses probably helped speed my downward spiral into cynicism.
