The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up] Yes, pretty much. It is extraordinary for a President and Congress of the same party to disagree enough on a budget that they would be unable to pass one even in the face of absolute opposition from the minority party.

Can the Democrats come 2018 (or 2021 if needed) just get rid of the stupid Debt Ceiling? It has not done it's job of trying to slow down spending, all it's done is hurt the economy and the Government.

Just by the by, Sanders can't actually be primaried as he's not a Democrat. All the Dems could do is run a Dem for his seat and somehow hope that the splitting of the vote doesn't give the seat to the Republicans (which it likely would). The likely result of such a move would be a Republican senator and Bernie founding his own party to challenge Dems across the country, giving the Republicans a landslide that would make 2010 look like nothing.

[up][up]It would be preferable but perhaps too politically risky to do since a lot of people still buy into the whole "fiscal responsibility" non-sense and would try to use that to undercut anything else they try to get accomplished.

Worth noting that a continuing resolution is an option that Congress can use to simply declare that the current funding levels will continue until some later date. It's been done quite a few times and is not inherently a bad thing. However, if Trump vetoes a continuing resolution out of an desire to "appear tough", then we get that shutdown.

That this does not normally happen even during times of divided government is because the President is usually not a complete buffoon with no understanding of how government works.

This is also not a debt ceiling fight. That's a distinct issue, with different effects should it not get passed. Yes, the debt ceiling is stupid and should be removed, but it has nothing to do (directly) with a budget resolution.

I mean is there anything to stop congress passing a continuing resolution that kicks in if there is no budget passed? Basically making it so that the budget always stays the same as it was previously unless it's altered by a new budget?

Sure the Republicans would try and repeal such a bill, but if the Dems can keep either the House, Senate or White House they won't be able to.

The President can veto any budget passed by Congress. So if Trump vetoes the continuing resolution, it would require Democrats to align with Republicans to override it.

More Fun from Shelby County:
Live in the Sixth and want to register for the June 20 runoff? Too late.

According to little known provision in state law, the deadline for voter registration in that race was in March. And so, my AJC colleague Aaron Gould Sheinin tells us, a federal lawsuit has been filed:

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law filed the complaint in federal court in Georgia on behalf of five civil rights and voting rights organizations. It claims Georgia law cuts off voter registration for federal run-off elections two months earlier than guaranteed under federal law.

A key example, the committee said, is the coming June runoff for the 6th Congressional District. Anyone who had not registered to vote in March cannot register to participate in the June runoff between Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican Karen Handel.

The suit says that Section 8 of the National Voter Registration Act requires states to allow anyone to vote in a federal election if they register at least 30 days before that election. Georgia, however, allows people register at least 30 days before an election, but does not allow a person to vote in the runoff if they had not registered in time for the primary.

Secretary of State Brian Kemp’s office dismisssed the suit as a “completely political effort.”

“This law has been in place since Cathy Cox was in office and we will fight it in court,” Kemp chief of staff David Dove said.

Here’s the thing: When Cox, a Democrat, was secretary of state, runoffs were held three weeks after the first vote. A deal that Kemp cut with the U.S. Justice Department positions Georgia runoffs a full two months after the initial balloting.

This is brilliant. The best way to mess with Trump: devaluing his brand. There are some great strategies here. (The last one is my favorite).

Alabama will hold special election to replace frmr. Senator Jeff Sessions (now Attorney General), new Governor says, in a reversal of frmr. Governor Bentley's position that a Special Election was too costly. So far, current seat holder Luther Strange (R), State Rep. Ed Henry (R) and Ron Crumpton (D) have declared their intent to run for this seat.

So far, all I know is that a) Crumpton is a pro-Marijuana Activist, which is a plus, but b) lost in a Senate race last year against Richard Shelby (R). Unless he gets the "Sander's Seal of Approval", he has no prayer of winning.

You guys are discounting the insane amount of money and activism that's going to pour in on a grassroots level. Still probably unlikely though.

Oh yeah, the resistance school livestream is at 7:00 eastern time, which is in about 30 minutes, if anyone is interested. As I write this it is 6:30 ET.

I would love it if a pro-marijuana candidate replaced Sessions.

I think that the greatest threat to Trump's brand is Trump himself because he's so trashy.

Another twist:

https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2017/04/20/politics/juan-manuel-montes-bojorquez-judge-curiel/index.html

Judge whose Mexican heritage Trump denigrated will hear deportation case.

A highly unusual and racially charged episode from the 2016 campaign suddenly resurfaced this week when a federal judge whom President Donald Trump repeatedly criticized was assigned to hear the case of a man who claims he was improperly deported.

Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who was born in the US but is of Mexican heritage, was attacked by Trump last year over his handling of a lawsuit against Trump University. Trump claimed Curiel could not impartially hear the case because of his background and Trump's hardline immigration policies. The case was eventually settled.

Now, Curiel is assigned to hear the case of Juan Manuel Montes Bojorquez, 23, who his lawyers allege was deported from California to Mexico earlier this year despite having active protection under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, also known as DACA.

And Trump's comments toward Curiel last year — he called the Indiana-born judge a "hater" and a "Mexican" — drew some of the loudest accusations of racism that the then-candidate faced during his campaign and several repudiations from prominent Republicans.

I dunno that conflict of interest applies to having having had presided over a case involving Trump previously or to the fact that Trump's trying to have a spat with him. It's been pointed out that if that was cause for recusal then just about everyone would be incentivized to start fights with judges.
