Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Sanders has been nationally relevant for a long time. He's the father of the Progressive Caucus in the Democratic Party so he does have some legitimacy in saying who is a progressive in the US although some of us may not agree on that definition.
It's a waste of money and you'll being shooting the party in the foot. In fact, I would call it nearly party-breaking.
Worry about winning seats first rather than about unseating allies.
Perfect is the enemy of good.
Following this discussion, I can't help but feel that you saying "Perfect is the enemy of good." feels disingenuous because that's exactly what Sanders is allowing by claiming an unexpectedly strong Democratic candidate is "not a progressive" while stumping for a Blue Dog who fits his personal ideals better.

I don't have a direct line to Sanders or else I would tell him the same.
Nitpick but Mello isn't a Blue Dog. He's too left on the economic issues to be a Blue Dog
We don't really know what his opinions on social issues are just that he has a horrible view on abortion. I looked but I couldn't find anything.
There's not much you can do about that. I think any real course of action against Bernie would hurt the party more by far than it would help.
He's basically made himself invulnerable.
EPA put out a video where they went to a Chicago meeting and literally muted residents comments.

O'Reilly can cry himself to sleep on his giant pile of money. Makes me feel sooooo sorry for the guy. I guess they decided to pay him to leave.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Well, it does give the people suing Fox (and now O'Reilly personally, I presume) a nice figure to go after for damages.
Edited to add: The Trump team is gearing up for a budget fight
that would potentially give this administration a new first in U.S. politics: a government shutdown when one party controls both Congress and the White House.
The substance of the fight is that Trump's people are getting rather short-tempered over their total lack of any meaningful achievements in the first 100 days, and are threatening to withhold his signature on any budget bill that does not provide significantly increased funding for the border wall, surveillance, and the military. Congress, however, has shown every indication of kicking the can down the road until the fall.
If there is no budget and no continuing resolution by April 28, the government shuts down.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Article in Spanish, but apparently Nicolás Maduro (president of Venezuela) donated half a million dollars to Trump's inauguration
, through a subsidiary of Venezuela's "Petróleos de Venezuela" (state owned oil producer).
... Internet-Based Companies are sponsoring Trump? The man who's avidly anti-Net Neutrality?
... Maybe they're only sponsoring him to try and reverse that.
@Maduro trying to ally with Trump: Of course he would; Strongmen either attract one another or repel each other. And I don't recall Trump ever being critical of Venezuela's current Regime (at least, not recently).
Mary B. McCord is stepping down in May.
Who is she, you ask? She was leading the DOJ's investigation into the Trump-Russia ties.
Really hope the investigation doesn't just quietly die because of this.
Few things just from this page.
1) Keep in mind that O'Reilly was fired for allegations of sexual harassment (and the resulting loss of ad revenue), not for his political viewpoints.
2) The reason O'Reilly got such a nice bonus is due to his contract stipulating such if he was ever dismissed from the position - bet Fox News is kicking itself for not including some form of "Morality Clause" in there that would negate it, though O'Reilly likely wouldn't have signed if there were.
And in other news, there's something I haven't noticed get posted here yet - NY State is officially offering free tuition to Public colleges (Community and SUNY/CUNY schools) with a few major strings attached
.
- It's only towards a Bachelor's or Associate's degree - higher than that, and the student is on their own. Additionally, if you have an Associate's already, you must go for a Bachelor's to qualify, and those with a Bachelor's already are SOL. Also, it's only for Tuition - room & board is left to the student and their family.
- You have to have at least 30 credit hours per year to maintain it, though how that's divided is up to the student
- Upon completion, you have to reside in NY for the same length of time you received the scholarship, or else pay back the difference if you move out of state.

x3 Eh, not entirely true, most of the older people in my life have changed markedly over the past couple years or so. Mainly for the worse, admittedly, but still...
Someone did tell me life was going to be this way.
