The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Here's a question. Why is there a large amount of voter apathy among the youth bloc? Is it cynicism? hunting for the perfect unicorn to bring forth their utopia? not paying attention to politics and hoping that the winner would handle it?

[up] Cynicism is, at least in my experience, the biggest thing that keeps people in my generation away from politics.

[up][up] Or just the fact that youth voters these days are extremely fucking busy and voting takes place on a regular workday.

And yes, cynicism about how politics works and the idea that it doesn't matter because fixing it is pointless and something nobody can do anything about.

[up][up][up][up] Academic research into the subject wasn't being suppressed at the time. It wasn't of any political interest, so it didn't hit the media or political arena much. There was also a great deal of concern within the scientific community at the time about what would happen when politicians did become interested in it (most predictions on that subject have come true - including the carbon tax obsession, but I'm not sure this is the thread to discuss that).

This post admittedly comes from personal experience as I was involved in it at the time. It was indeed around that time that businesses were getting interested in the subject, certainly oil companies were starting to advertise for scientists with climatology training and experience. I did look into some of the job applications at the time (for curiosity's sake), and it did become very clear, very quickly that these jobs were PR exercises for the companies advertising them.

tl;dr: my point is that, yes, private companies were interested in suppressing climatology research but academic researchers were not, and that's where most of the research was actually occurring.

I'm arguing that Ambar is wrong to simply dismiss young voters as politically irrelevant and ignorant,

Sure, and I'm pointing out that Amber isn't actually doing that, you're belief that Amber is doing that is based either on a fundemental difference in understanding of the meaning of words, you reading the wrong posts or (most likely) you projecting your own baseless assumptions onto Amber and insisting that they're right even when Amber says that that's not what he believes.

@Morning Star 1337 The second and third, in my experience. Or in the case of some of my family, being registered in California. The Republican in my family thinks it's pointless and some of the Democrats in my family think it's unnecessary.

BTW I forgot to mention this.

Apparently Alex "Infowars" Jones' lawyer claims that he is only playing a character on his show, in a custody battle.

Frankly I'm of the opinion that this is BS.

@Silas: The original point being made was that who youth voters support today is completely irrelevant. I'm arguing that it's not irrelevant, because the policies that are associated with those people can be predictive of future voting.

I propose we add "ethics" to the list of buzzwords populists use.

I wouldn't count of chasing young voters given the amount that voted for Jill 420 #YOLO row row fight da powah Stein.

It also takes a lot of reading and understanding to make sound choices and support political movements based on sensible policies. Something the majority of the voters between 18 to 24 don't have.

If now even the WWC middle aged and middle class which should be fairly schooled voted with the brains on their asses, based on their emotions and insecurities instead of being at least fairly rational, I wouldn't expect younger and inexperienced voters to do any better.

If Stein did any damage, it wasn't the votes she got, it was in the potential Clinton voters she influenced to stay home.

Another question, related to the young voting block. Why were the voting ages set at 18 or lower (I presume it varies by state), if the people in this bloc were either too inexperienced or uncaring to vote anyway?

And no. I do not advocate the raising of this requirement. I am aware that anything of the sort would be yet another right being eroded. I'm curious as to why it is as low as it is form the start.

[up][up] Was this before or after she attempted to get a recount in the election?
