The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Honestly, that doesn't count as Hindsight. Hindsight is if something happens which you couldn't really predict or had unintended consequences. But what is currently happening in the US is exactly what I said would happen. Everyone with two brain cells should be able to look through Trump quite easily. Saying that this is hindsight is like saying that nobody could foresee that the kleptomaniac might steal something.

Calling it hindsight is a bit disingenuous, but that's an olive branch. We need to care more about winning than pride.

"Hindsight is 2020" tells people, "I get you, man. No one could have predicted how hard that sucked. And man, did that suck. But at least we can make a better call this time, right?"

Any variant on "I told you so" tells people, "Hey, dumbf*ck, you going to do what I tell you this time and not be such a dumbf*ck?" That might be emotionally satisfying in the moment, but people tend to drift towards whichever side isn't calling them a dumbf*ck. That's part of how the GOP regularly hooks the poorly educated: playing up the idea of an intelligence-based class war.

Or if the nominee is female...flip it from Mitch's words around on them.

"Nevertheless She Persisted."

Or simply

"Persist"

[up][up] Oh, it works perfectly as a campaign slogan. After all, honesty isn't exactly a feature of marketing.

Still, nothing of this is really a surprise and I absolutely don't get why so many people act as if it is.

I'm just hoping that if we do win in 2018 and 2020, we don't just try to sweep this whole debacle under the rug. They have to have their noses rubbed in the mess they made. This kind of shit can't happen again.

Frankly I think Hindsight is 2020 needs to be a hashtag if it's not already.

Far as I can tell from a casual Google search, the Sanders camp has already claimed 'Hindsight is 2020'.

[up]Whatever, Reagan did the Make America Great Again before Trump (and, of course, also fucked it up), so whomever's the Dem nominee in 2020 can take Hindsight is 2020.

The Sanders camp does not get to claim that slogan given their role in this mess.

Sanders might not even run in four years, hell he could be dead by then. And that's a bad thing (other than him dying, which is bad on its own) because either his movement implodes without him, or they go totally off the leash and the Unicorn Brigade dominates them.

[up] The part that Ambar is referring to? Poisoning the well among (would be) democratic voters by floating conspiracies about Hillary Clinton originated by right wing rags and radio talk from the time of the Bill Clinton presidency.

One look at the Republican field should have been enough to get the Sanders or Clinton camps to fall in line with the winner right away. Alas, they thought with their hearts (or rather, egos) instead of their brains.
