The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Can reorganized also be taken to mean "kick the current head and hire someone competent"? Because if so, I'd like to vote for the EPA, almost all the Departments...

[up] You can give those as a reason to reorganize, yes.

Bat187: Is ICE one of the agencies that can be voted to be axed?

Now that I've looked at the Survey; yes, it is. Under the Department of Homeland Security in the Cabinet Agencies, not the Other Agencies, Boards and Commissions.

[up][up]Or they can just read the data however they want to and ignore your reasons, so, you know, be careful about that.

This survey is just a way for the Trump administration to say "See? We were right, the citizens agree with us!" And they'll try to warp whatever the results are to suit their needs. So, I'm inclined to say that nothing should be changed unless it's something that really does need it. They just want to justify their BS.

It would be funny if ICE was the only thing that got a significant response. They would have no idea what to do with that.

I am worried that the IRS will get a big response asking for it to be axed because it's, you know, completely necessary to the functioning of the government. Yeah, paying taxes sucks, but it is genuinely your duty as a law abiding citizen to pay taxes to the government that provides a ton of services.

[up]Unless of course, you make an income higher than X arbitrary amount and can be considered "rich", in which case it is almost considered your obligation to dodge taxes. And in Trump's case be praised for it.

Despite the surveyors limiting this study to women, tis more important for a general sobering trend it may reveal. Some Women Who Backed President Trump May Be Having Second Thoughts

Although they're not yet regretting their vote, many female Trump voters were discouraged by Trump's rollout of the failed health care bill and disappointed by his proposed budget, which would cut funding for programs that help children and the elderly, such as after-school programs and Meals on Wheels.

The focus groups, which were conducted by Democracy Corps on behalf of Women's Voices Women Vote Action Fund, collected observations from 52 women in battleground states where there was disappointing turnout for Democrats in 2016 and in midterm elections.

The researchers found that when presented with the Congressional Budget Office's findings about the AHCA and Trump's proposed budget, the women who voted for Trump didn't push back, which is how many Trump voters have previously responded when presented with negative information about him. Instead, voters expressed doubts about the health plan and budget, and concern that Trump's wealth — which was such an asset to him during the election — may be impeding his ability to understand their needs.

"During the campaign, his wealth worked for him: he was an independent actor, he couldn’t be influenced the same way, he didn’t need the money, all those arguments were powerful," says Page Gardner, founder and president of Women's Voices Women Vote Action Fund. "You now see that his wealth has become in some ways a negative for him. Because if he’s proposing all these cuts which they can’t understand, the wealth is now ‘he doesn’t understand my life, he’s lived a pampered life, he doesn’t get it, he’s never walked in my shoes.'"

"That’s very important I think, because these are voters who voted for him because they thought he understood their frustration and their needs," she said.

...Even in groups where they were outnumbered by Trump supporters, the anti-Trump participants were so vocal that focus group moderators had to coax the Trump supporters into the discussion. ...women who supported Trump are having some serious doubts. They still supported his "straight-shooter" approach and wanted him to deal with immigration and border control, but they also called him a "hot head," "egotistical," and worried his lack of experience in foreign affairs could "lead to war."

In short, people are starting to realize why sticking your hand in the toaster oven is a bad idea. We told them and told them and told them, but they were like, "DUDE, don't f*cking tell me what to do." And now they're nursing second-degree burns and reconsidering whether or not they should have been listening.

hen presented with the Congressional Budget Office's findings about the AHCA and Trump's proposed budget,

So this only speaks about these Trump voters who do follow sufficiently non-partisan news. Afraid that that is not a big proportion of Trump voters.

Something interesting I came across:

http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/04/donald-trump-steve-bannon-breitbart-215026

If Trump Fired Bannon, Would He Seek Revenge?
Friends and foes imagine his options for brutal payback.

Whhen Steve Bannon vacated a home in Florida in 2015, his landlord complained that an entire Jacuzzi had apparently been coated in acid. After conservative media star Dana Loesch left Bannon’s employ at Breitbart News in 2012, she filed a suit against the website, alleging a plot to “sabotage” her career. When Bannon failed to take over the Biosphere 2 ecology experiment in 1993, he “vowed profanely to take revenge” on a scientist who crossed him, according to the woman’s lawyer. And when Bannon was breaking up with his second wife, she accused him of grabbing her by the throat and threatening to take away their children, while his lawyer reportedly threatened that she would end up with “no money” if the resultant domestic abuse case went to trial.

Parting ways with Donald Trump’s chief strategist, it seems, is rarely a simple proposition. But with Trump undercutting Bannon in recent interviews and speculation running rampant that he could soon lose his job amid vicious West Wing infighting, the White House may soon be doing just that.

I asked friends and foes alike to imagine how, should Bannon get the boot, the pugnacious populist might exact his revenge.

Taken together, their suggestions amount to an epic, Kill Bill-style revenge saga that starts with Bannon leaking personal dirt on his enemies to the tabloids, using the megaphone of Breitbart News to exacerbate divisions inside the administration, and siccing an army of internet trolls on his adversaries to harass and defame them. It ends with Bannon using Cambridge Analytica data to identify and primary their vulnerable allies in Congress, then releasing a “Where Trump Went Wrong” documentary on the eve of the November midterms and finally—in this revenge fantasy’s epic climax—running against Trump himself in 2020.

[up]Bannon doesn't seem like the type who'd run for president.

Donald Trump has overtaken Barack Obama on executive orders and, as always, there's a Trump tweet that could be used to criticize Trump himself.

I've thought of that too. It's currently my favorite slogan. "Hindsight is 2020." Anyone who runs that will win because it's snappy, it's funny, and it's easy to get behind. That means people will say it. A lot.

Hillary had two slogans but no one was really saying them much besides her. Trump's supporters, on the other hand, were screaming MAGA at the top of their lungs.

It probably actually is. The actively misinformed (and misinformation-seeking) crowd on the_donald and the chans might be loud, but there are a lot of low or no information voters who take in little or no news media, real or fake.

@women having second thoughts about voting trump:

Why yes, he WAS raised in a very pampered, sheltered environment and he doesnt actually understans the problems of people with less money than him.

Which is, you know, what people have been saying this whole time.

Hindsight is 2020.
