Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

South Korea's pretty much constantly had that threat for the past 50 years or so. Especially since after the Korean War ended, the Kim Jong-whatevers have constantly threatened to attack and never followed through. There's only so long you can care about an imminent threat before your burn out and start focusing on other things.
Like, after the 60s, people in the US stopped caring so much about the imminent threat of nuclear war. It was still there, but people had been terrified for over a decade and they couldn't maintain the emotions involved.
It's hard to care about a threat that never seems to come.
I see and understand what you're saying. But look at it from another perspective; who's more dangerous, the toddler with the loaded gun, or the person who actually knows how to use the gun?
Maybe a better question would be, which of the two has the greater potential for harm?
The toddler, at worst, will probably only harm themselves, and maybe a handful of other people.
The trained person with the gun? They could kill dozens.
I think it's more that he has a really short attention span. He is uncommonly good at scamming people (although his scams tend to be weirdly obvious, I don't really know what that says about him or about the people who fall for them) so he's got to have some level of intelligence. A lot of his really dumb moves look like an idea he had that he put in place before anyone could think about them. The Sharper Image steak thing comes to mind. There is a dumb sort of logic there, "hey, the Sharper Image sells ovens and grills, why not sell steaks there too?" But it doesn't hold up if you think about it for more than three seconds.

...the toddler. By, like, a lot.
An adult who knows how to use a gun may have a higher probability of shooting you if that's their intention, but the toddler is more likely to shoot you regardless of their intention.

Trump is cleaver and cunning, he is good at hurting other people and have sort of raw charm but as you said he have pretty short temper about...pretty much everything.
in short, if you belive in freud trio, trump would be dominate by the id.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Seeing how Trump keeps launching missiles to and fro, I feel like this is upping chances for a war just because he wants to.
But he's pretty stupid at doing so, because he keep revealing his plans publicly and- if you think about it-striking areas for no reason at all.

He succeeded because he is a conman, he is clever in the sense he is good at exploring his self image.
Which is all good when you need to con a few business and convince everyone else you're really wealthy because most people won't bother to scrutinize you, now as a president things change because everything Trump does and says will be deconstructed and torn apart by everyone.

Also here's her intro:

I'm also pretty interested in public policy and politics.
I found this answer pretty interesting as to why she ran as a Republican:
I mean, I'm talking about greatest potential for harm.
Sure, the toddler is more likely to shoot you, but it'll be an accident, and few people would be harmed.
No matter what way you look at it, there is no way a toddler is more dangerous than someone who actually knows how to use a weapon. They'd do the same damage the toddler would do, and more.
Besides, the analogy of "clown with nuclear codes" is a better comparison here.
Pence is apparently visiting South Korea on the 15th: http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-asia-pence-idUSKBN17821J
I still wouldn't be happy about the asshole who cast the tie-breaker votes to let through Devos and to let states defund Planned Parenthood becoming POTUS if Trump gets impeached...but I probably wouldn't be fearing for the very future of humanity if that happened.
Then again, I'm speaking from a position of privilege since I'm not one of the minorities Pence considers an abomination.

Disgusted, but not surprised

It's not just that Trump et al are evil, it's that they're Supid Evil. The Bush administration was stupid, and evil, but we could recover from it (White America has always been stupid lucky like that). Trump's losing popularity, but he could still fuck us over because he needs to compensate for his many, many inadequacies and because he's a spoiled little shit who has no idea how to function in the real world.
I would rather have Pence, because A) he can at least act like an adult to some degree, and B) he's been beaten before. He's a super-conservative governor from a deep red state, and they're already reversing his legislation there because the people who voted for him don't like him.
