The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up] They would also have to get past either the Chinese and Filipino navies or the Russian and Japanese navies depending on which way they go, and I don't think either of them would like a nuke being moved through their waters to attack the US with.

@Garcon: The destruction of culture is no laughing matter; while the lives that would be lost are even more of a tragedy, the irreversible destruction of art and artists in times of warfare is a loss to the whole of humanity.

That and it would be a lasting symptom of the more horrific problem that caused it even if absolutely minimal lives were lost. Japan's culture would never be the same again.

I'm pretty sure the loss of millions of lives, our defensive capabilities in the Pacific, the world economy, and the precedence for nuclear escalation is a bigger deal than the gaming industry despite Bat's constant goings on.

There's a lot more at stake in all this than video games and Asian media you know. Why do you keep looping back to that?

This feels so surreal.

Bush was bad. The Bush administration was worse than I ever realized back then, and probably worse than I realize now. But for all their bullshit, I never once believed they'd start dropping nukes on people. They wanted to exploit and abuse the international order, but they never reached Trump's levels of ignorance and stupidity.

[up]x 5 There's a (probably less than accurate) theory that the fall of Rome itself could be at least partly attributed to lead poisoning.

[up]x 4 International order is less than appreciated. Hell, the word order/stability tends to be seen as an excuse to allow crimes to go unpunished (not entirely wrong). A common theme, I've observed that's correlated with Trump supporters (and the GOP in general) is mockery of the UN in particular and international law (and traditions) in general.
When you aren't quite getting everything you want, are convinced the rest of the world should bow to you as a moral conclusion, and have never had your capital sacked and burned (in living memory), tis easy to resort to calling out the troops. Tis relatively hard to make an argument defending the status quo, particularly when the Kim Dynasty is part of it, but perfect solutions are for those who wake up with God's job one day. For everyone else, yeah squashing Kim would be cool...on a game of Rise of Nations, but in real life tis probably better to pretend to treat him like a respectable leader than to pretend to offer sincerest condolences to the millions killed, made homeless, impoverished, traumatized...

I feel like you guys over-exaggerate things sometimes.

If anything, you should consider Bush far more sinister, because he had actual competent people in his administration. While with Trump it's just him and his circus of clowns.....

Their profound incompetence is exactly why they are so dangerous. They have no idea how anything works and don't consider the consequences of their actions. It's like handing a toddler a loaded gun and hoping everything works out. It won't.

[up][up][up]Probably. 2016 might have been a cynicism catalyst, but at least I'm at a lost at what to expect. The administration's history so far has been breaking precedents and traditions without strategy or even much thought at times. Calamities are caused by accidents as often as intent. And tis in neither state's interest to make war, but the leaders are perfectly capable of keeping up a stageshow that slides into one.

iflewaway isn't helping here. I don't think China will want to start WW3 or a nuclear war over North Korea, though. They have already distanced themselves more and more from North Korea over the years, and look about ready to turn on them if they don't sit their asses down and shut up.

Yeah, North Korea isn't exactly a WWIII catalyst. It is a potential catalyst for a slew of non-world ending but still fucking serious problems though, and it's something we all still need to keep an eye on.

Apparently it's mostly us in the West that are freaking out about this. South Korean news is apparently more worried about the elections than war coming out the next few days.
