Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

"Implementation of the preemptive U.S. plans, according to multiple U.S. officials, depends centrally on consent of the South Korean government. The sources stress that Seoul has got to be persuaded that action is worth the risk, as there is universal concern that any military move might provoke a North Korean attack, even a conventional attack across the DMZ."
If they're provoked far enough, North Korea will level Seoul. Not with nukes — they don't have to. They've got enough conventional artillery pointed at it that they could do catastrophic damage before we could find and destroy all of it, even if we started with a surprise attack. There's no way in hell that South Korea would agree to a preemptive strike on North Korea unless either a) we can guarantee that North Korea won't retaliate (good luck with that one), or b) we have credible intelligence that a North Korean attack is eminent (in which case, all best are off anyway).
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Oh God, North Korea...
At this point, if it's a choice between a military coup and the destruction of Seoul, I'm totally for the coup. I would say impeachment, but I doubt that the Republicans have either the balls or the common sense to replace this jackass with the more rational Pence.
I don't really know if Mc Masters or Mattis or our military command has considered it, but they've seemed the sanest members of the Trump regime so far.
Edit: Hell of a page topper.

Or the impact on the gaming industry, ESPECIALLY if Japan gets hit too as they one of the three main markets for video games (The other two being North America and Europe), many gaming companies and developers are based there and two of the three console makers (Nintendo and Sony) have their H Qs there. The gaming industry would crash overnight.

White House Website asks the public to vote for which Departments and Agencies should be Reformed, and which Departments and Agencies should be axed.
It's not just Departments that Republicans typically hate, though; 20 Departments, including the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security, and Hundreds of Agencies in these Departments, including the CIA and the Office of Management and Budget, are on that list.
I'm trying to find this survey myself and participate in it, though I'm having some trouble finding it.

They can hit Hawaii though, at least theoretically. And while the death toll might be lower if it's Honolulu instead of Los Angeles, either one would be horrific.
There's also the possibility of just shipping a nuke over on a boat. It would be a long shot since we would have a high chance of the US intercepting it at sea and North Korea doesn't have that many nukes to take that kind of risk, but it's not something I would rule out if they are truly desperate.
Or, it would be a longshot, if the Trump regime wasn't trying to defund the coast guard to pay for his stupid vanity project of a wall that can't do anything.

That is the reason I call them "unicorn brigade" instead of saying something like "Bernie Bros", "progressives", etc. I am aware it's a (very vocal) minority, so I'm trying to make it clear that I'm addressing them and not everybody who belongs to the "Berniecrats" (most of whom I find to be very reasonable once we address common complaint "x" or "y").
