The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up] So the GOP Rep is accusing the Democratic Party of supporting a Democratic candidate?

...WTF. I'm done. This is too much GOP stupidity for the day. I'm gonna work on that backlog of Steam games to unwind.

[up][up] The sad thing is, even if the Republicans wanted to help one of their candidates in Georgia, I don't think they can; I heard the Trump campaign took a lot of resources out of them, and that they hardly have any finances to continue operating as a National Party. I did hear they got a lot of Donations in January, but I can't confirm that, and I'm not sure a lot of Donations in January are going to be enough for them, especially in 2-4 years.

I'd go with "imploding" myself. They are collapsing rather than exploding outwards.

But they are exploding; they're insulting their constituence, each other, and (especially) minority groups, getting nothing done, and are at the point that I wouldn't be surprised if another Charles Sumner Incident happened in Congress (IE, a more radical Congressman attacking and almost murdering another).

Smith wasn't wrong in his statement. The GA GOP is still a going concern, but tis in enormous debt that was greatly aggravated by them defending (the same person more than once) against discrimination lawsuits.
Here it is: Trump win aside, Georgia Republican Party finances continue to slide

In January, the state party spent more than twice as much as it took in and finished the month with $38,000 in the bank and $317,000 in debt, according to new campaign finance reports.

By contrast, the state Democratic Party, which has won few if any big races in recent years, reported having $267,000 banked.

[GOP] financial fortunes have fallen since 2010, when it had about $2 million in the bank. And while the bank account has recovered slightly from a nadir of just $11,403 in December 2015, some Republican officials are raising sharp questions.

When people vote, they essentially think "Which person is going to screw me over less?" and this election, they were wrong no matter who they voted for.

Got any evidence for this claim?

Well, I have to admit, this is a decent week for Trump's foreign policy. He seems to have arrived at some sort of friendly understanding with China.

Ironically, he has almost reversed his positions toward NATO, Russia, Syria, and China since the campaign.

Now if he will just give up the damn wall.

Andrew Napolitano, the infamous former Judge who works with Fox, and who just last month was temporarily suspended for his claim to have proof of "Obama's Illegal Wiretaps", condemns Trump's Syria Strike as Emotional and Illegal.

Paul Ryan, raising 22 Million in the last 3 months, is spending money in Georgia's Special Election and will be Robo-Calling to help the Republican Party, but no specific Candidate.

I find it Ironic that Ryan has more money then the Republican Party itself. Also, you Democrats in Georgia better get out and support Jon Ossoff. I know Ryan is not the most popular Politician in America right now (or really, ever), but his Robo-Calls could still influence Republicans who were more willing to sit out and not vote.

There's something I'm starting to wonder...depending on how complicated the mentality of the GOP and the alt-right is, could they start to develop a mentality so rigid that becomes borderline obsessive and insane that in the case that Trump would be incapable of seeking re-election or loses it...how could they react? Would they accept another GOP candidate...or only ones that fit their view? Or just Trump...?

I think Trump could strive to be Bush but worse and more offensive if he keeps up his current flips, backs off on the wall, and stays away from trade.

Domestic policy is a write off but we all knew that was a consequence of electing a Republican this last year.

[up] The GOP will, or at least most of them will.

The Alt-Right is too new, we don't know how they'd react. If they're like the traditional Right (though they aren't), they will, but I honestly don't know if they will.

[up][up][up][up]The former is already there, that's how we got Trump to begin with.

The alt-right may infight itself to irrelevance, but their ideas already have traction with the GOP at large, or legitimised ideas the GOP already had.

[up] OK then.

But nonetheless...in case if their mindset (The alt-right in the GOP)keeps deteriorating to the point of not distinguishing from fact and fantasy...how would they react if Trump loses the 2020 elections or when he ceases to be president in some moment?

The alt-right might just stay home if they get ticked off with Trump, many of them don't usually vote.

The former Obama voters that went for him can easily be turned back towards the Dems once they realize they've been conned and the factory jobs aren't coming back.

The Alt-Right websites, news feeds and comment sections with the exclusion of the r_theDonald are going nuts with Trump with a constant shit flinging among each other over whether Trump is just another Neocon under an (((Agenda))) that managed to play them or if he still going to deliver his promises and the librul tears over his presidency as still being worth to support him.

The recent developments over Syria, over annoying Russia, over not going much further with the wall, over failing to repeal Obamacare and specially sidelining Bannon in favor of (((Kushner))) and (((Cohn))), have sent a lot of the Alt-Reich groups into confusion over Trump and his policies.
